Tsim Sha Tsui is one of the major tourist and shopping areas of Hong Kong. With a high concentration of hotels, retail shops and commercial offices – it’s a busy and bustling neighbourhood that never sleeps. On the surface, Tsim Sha Tsui seems to only feature an abundant number of high-end retail stores selling designer brands and jewelry, owing to its popularity with high-budget shopping tours. However, it also contains a diverse range of attractions for the entire family. Whether taking a walk in Kowloon Park, exploring museums, going shopping or grabbing a bite to eat – Tsim Sha Tsui has something for everyone.

Looked forward to visiting the Science Museum only to discover that it seems more suitable for school aged visitors with the range of hands-on exhibits. The Geology and Mineral exhibits of Hong Kong were of interest, also the tsunami tank, creating a tornado and decoding tree rings. We had some fun in the mirrors section and were impressed with the palaeontology gallery.

We have been before, about 18
Months ago so it was great to see that their exhibitions have changed.
One of the best bits is the gigantic marble run which was on just as we had entered! It’s fantastic. The mirror room is also very clever and they explain the maths and angles too! A great day out!

This is one of the very best child-friendly attractions in Hong Kong and a perfect place to take the kids on a rainy or hot day. Located right next to the equally excellent Hong Kong Museum of History, the Hong Kong Museum of Science offers four floors of endless science inspired fun.

Here over 650 exhibitions are presently on display, with over 500 of them being interactive, meaning your kids (and curious adults) have hours of different things to try in this museum. Many exhibits are simple while others are more engaging and interactive. Collectively, they can easily occupy your time for several hours. This is why this particular museum is an excellent choice on bad weather days.

There is much to like about this museum. We particularly enjoy the 22-meter tall ‘Energy Machine’ that is turned on every couple of hour. Here you can see a system of balls that are set in motion, every couple of hours, seeming to fly around the museum, producing different sounds and visual effects. You won’t be able to miss this main attraction as it takes place over a large portion of the museum. When its running, you can’t really avoid it.

We also enjoy the Life Science gallery on the ground floor, finding many of the exhibits there quite interesting, lots of interactive stuff for the families in this area. The Hall of Mirrors, on the same floor is quite fun. Other areas we like are the E&M gallery and its series of magnet exhibitions (1/F) as well as the prototype and telecommunication galleries on the second floor (2/F). On the 3/F there is a children’s room with actual play areas, giant bubble making and other fun activities designed for the little ones, as if there wasn’t enough for them to do in this museum already.

Unfortunately there is no café at the museum and only a few vending machines with cheap drinks. On busy days, these few machines can be emptied of beverages, which we have discovered during the hot summer months. Fortunately, you can walk over to the HK Museum of History, which is just a couple of minutes across a shared terrace and visit the café there. Or if you are finished with the museum and want more fun atmosphere, you can walk down to Cameroon road and visit the fun Charlie Brown Café, just a 5-6 minute walk from the museum, making a great way to end the day, especially for those with kiddies.

Overall, this is probably one of Hong Kong’s best museums due to the large number of family and child-friendly things to do and see here. Not only is it a fun place for kiddies, its entertaining for adults who have a curious mind as well. Entrance fee is more expensive than other HK museums at HK$25 per adult, HK$12.5 for children and free for those under 4 years of age, but you easily get what you pay for with the HK Museum of Science.

We recently visited Legends of the Great Dinosaur exhibition at the Hong Kong Science Museum and found this to be a very good form of entertainment for families looking for child-friendly activities during their time in Hong Kong.

The exhibition includes robotic dinosaurs which move around, some fossils, skeleton replicas, interactive forms of entertainment and a couple multimedia videos of the China during the Jurassic Period and another of the Mass Extinction. There is quite a lot to keep the little ones (and dinosaur loving adults) entertained for hour to an hour and half.

The Legends of the Great Dinosaur runs through 9th of April 2014 (HK$20 per adult, HK$14 per child) and is open every day 10am-7pm (Weekday)) and 10am-9pm (Sat and Sun). You can also buy a combined ticket, allowing you to visit the permanent exhibits at the Hong Kong Science Museum.

Hint: Queues to the dinosaur exhibition were short when we arrived at 12.30pm but very long by 2pm when we left.

Went on a Wednesday, so it was free of charge. Expected it to be really busy, but it wasn't. Exhibits were ok. We didn't go to the dinosaur special exhibit. Quite a lot of hands on activities for kids, which were also in English. Probably geared to kids 8 years and older and a lot of it would complement school lessons rather than just general interest stuff.

This is probably the best science museum i've been to. Very good interactive installations. It is 3 huges floors. You will be needing at least 2 hours to enjoy the entire museum. Its clean and updated. All items inside are working. Kids and students enjoys free entrance and only 20 hk for adults.

A must visit when you are in hongkong with your kids.

The price to get in isn’t expensive. There is lots to see and worth paying the little extra for the Winter Olympics Exhibition, that is great fun for both children and adults. The big energy exhibition which runs on the top floor every now and again throughout the day was fascinating. We had good fun with the mirrors. The Museum is next to the History Museum. We managed both on the same day. I good rainy day activity.

My son and I spent a few days in Hong Kong and decided to check out the Science Museum. It was fun and had a nice variety of science exhibits with hands on activities and things to learn about.

There were exhibits on light, levitating water, wind and sails, Morse code and other forms of communication over the years, dinosaurs, acupuncture, how different creatures' vision works, a really cool mirror hall, a neat exhibit on optical illusions where you could make it look like your head was on a platter on a table, among others. With four floors of exhibits there was a lot to see! One cool thing that takes up four floors is the energy machine. It is 22 meters tall and the largest of its kind in the world. It demonstrates energy conversion through the movement of balls down the towers. When set in motion, a continuous stream of balls will roll along tracks within and between the two towers like a roller coaster, producing dramatic sounds and visual effects. It can be memorizing. There is a little kids area too but we didn't check it out. One for kids under 160 cm and another for kids 80-120 cm.

Hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays: 10 am – 7 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays: 10 am – 9 pm. Tickets are HK $20, with seniors (60+) being HK $10, and children under 4 are free. There is parking or you can take the MTR and walk about 15-20 minutes from several nearby stops.

The museum has a gift shop with lots of science related items in it, on the first floor.

We really liked our visit and would recommend it.

The museum is really for children; not much for solo adult travelers. Since it is one of the seven museums included in the weekly $30 Hong Kong Museum Pass, I thought it would worth a visit. I went on a Wednesday, which happens to be free museum day, and the museum was packed with children and their parentals.
