One of the awesome religious structures that I have ever seen! It is massive and you need to climb 268 steps to get to the top so not for the faint-hearted but worth it. You can take your time and climb the steps at your own pace (which I did). At the top there are some other small statues facing the Buddha and you can go inside the base and view some exhibits. I took the bus from the Metro under the Citygate outlet and the journey took about 35 minutes and very cheap but make sure you have the correct change as the driver does not give change or use the HK “Oyster card”. After visiting the big buffs, you can visit the monastery right beside it as well. Highly Recommended!

My visit there was actually very quick but satisfying. I boarded the cable car going there quite late at 4pm so I had only 45 minutes to really see the beauty of the buddha. Although I decided not to climb up the stairs due to the lack of time, I was able to look and observe closely from afar the magnificence of the statue. The atmosphere was serene, windy and calm and I like the tranquility that it gave me at the time. I am sure that I'd be much more immersed if I had more time to go up and see the buddha's face right in front of me. With the monastery nearby, I could see monks walking by. What's more, it was also the time when GO PANDA was stationed there so I was hitting many birds in one stone. It was a golden day, a golden experience!

Our family trip to The Big Buddha (Tian Tan Buddha) on Lantau Island was a truly unforgettable experience. The iconic statue, sitting majestically at 34 meters tall, is not only a significant cultural landmark but also a serene escape from the bustling city life of Hong Kong.

Getting There
We took the Ngong Ping 360 cable car to reach the site, which added to the excitement of our visit. The cable car ride offered breathtaking views of lush greenery, mountains, and the South China Sea. As we ascended, we were treated to panoramic vistas that set the stage for our day ahead.

Arrival at Ngong Ping
Upon arrival at Ngong Ping Village, we were greeted by a charming atmosphere filled with shops, eateries, and cultural exhibits. The village had a welcoming vibe, and we took some time to explore the area before heading to the Buddha.

The Ascent
The walk to the Big Buddha involved climbing 268 steps, which was a bit of a workout but well worth it. The steps were surrounded by beautiful landscaping and peaceful surroundings, making the ascent enjoyable. Along the way, we paused to take pictures and appreciate the intricate details of the nearby Po Lin Monastery, which added to the spiritual ambiance of the area.

The Big Buddha
As we finally approached the Big Buddha, the sight was awe-inspiring. The sheer size of the statue was breathtaking, and it emanated a sense of peace and tranquility. We took our time to walk around the base, soaking in the serene atmosphere and capturing moments on camera.

Cultural Insights
Inside the Po Lin Monastery, we had the opportunity to learn about Buddhism and its significance in Hong Kong. The monks were welcoming, and we appreciated the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the culture. The monastery’s architecture, with its intricate designs and vibrant colors, added to the overall experience.

Scenic Views
The views from the top near the Big Buddha were simply stunning. We could see the surrounding mountains and the lush landscape stretching out in all directions. It was a perfect spot to take family photos and enjoy a moment of reflection together.

Conclusion
Our visit to The Big Buddha was a highlight of our trip to Hong Kong. The combination of stunning natural beauty, cultural insights, and the tranquil atmosphere made it a memorable experience for the whole family. Whether you’re seeking spiritual reflection or simply want to enjoy breathtaking views, The Big Buddha is a must-visit destination. We left feeling enriched and grateful for the experience, making it a cherished memory for our family.

This place was really calm and quiet when I reached there. If you reach there before 9AM, it will be less crowded as the cable car starts at 10AM. I really recommend this place.

If possible take a local bus trip for early arrival which is really exciting as it goes through mountains. When returning you can select the cable car. If you are leaving before 11 AM then mostly you will be alone in the cable car because it's the arrival time of all tourists. You won't end up in the crowd.

Also, there are a couple of shops outside the monastery where they will only accept cash. Keep in mind that. If you prefer to eat with your card you might have to spend a lot of money.

Inside the temple you cannot take pictures / video.

This is a highlight of Lantau Island and Hong Kong. A must. I would recommend doing this first when arriving at Lantau Island. Climbing the steps to reach the Tian Tan Buddha statue is tiring and tough, so get that part done with! Also it tends to get busier as the day progresses, so go early when it is quieter and you can appreciate it more. Once at the top, you will be glad you did it. There is an exhibition and information inside which is very interesting and you can learn more. The views are spectacular. Very calming and peaceful.

We were mesmerized seeing the Big Buddha from our Cable Car from Tung Chung. The big Idol is about 110 ft sitting tall on the hill top and looking so majestic, to reach here takes around 30 minutes on a  crystal cabin cable car with a glass bottom with stunning views of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Big Buddha from afar. It is enthroned on a lotus platform structure on top of an 3 platform altar and surrounding it are six smaller bronze images known as "The Offering of the Six Devas" that are posed offering flowers, incense, lamp, ointment, fruit, and music to the Buddha, representing the Six perfections symbols of generosity, morality, patience, zeal, meditation, and wisdom, necessary for Enlightenment in Life. On reaching the site we had to climb a flight of 268 steps to reach the Big Buddha and the smaller bronze statues of the Devas, we performed pujas by offering fruits and flowers to the Buddha and burning Candles and Icence sticks. There were several monks present at the temple chanting Buddhist mantras and sutras.

Don't think this reviewer is usually the mystical or highly spiritual type, but believe me when I say that the Tian Tan Buddha feels almost like a living being as you approach his elevated position at the end of a long staircase.

His eyes seem to follow you thoughtfully, as if the great old spirit is judging your worth as a person all the way up. One hand welcomes the pure-hearted, while the other rejects those with bad intentions. Which category do you belong to?

Several women fell to their knees every third step – it made for a very long climb.

Tian Tan Buddha (created as recently as 1992) is worth the long trip from downtown Hong Kong. It's one of those sights you must not miss. This is coming from someone who has seen all the new 7 wonders of the world. In my opinion, the Big Buddha in Hong Kong can easily compare to the statue of Jesus in Rio de Janeiro.

The journey there can be done relatively cheaply from Kowloon: First, take the red metro line, change at Lei King to the yellow line (departing from the same platform), and go to the end station Tung Chung. From there, Bus 23 goes directly to the foot of the Big Buddha. Easy-peasy.

It's a way out, as the cable car was out of commission, so had to take the bus.
The queue for the bust was very long, and they only accept exact change in cash.
The bus trip is about an hour, but once there it is peaceful.
The Buddha is on top of a mountain, so you got to be fit to climb about 250 steps.
The Buddha statue is huge, and has a great information centre at its base.
Once this is complete, it worth a visit to the monastery which is a short walk.
If your hungry you can have vegetarian meal for a small fee.

Ngong ping village, is a bit commercialised, and all the shops sell the same old overpriced tat for tourists.

Overall well worth the visit to get away from the hustle of Hong Kong.

The Big Buddha (Tian Tan Buddha) can be reached through the Ngong Ping Village after arriving with the Cable Car or bus. Reaching it you go through the 12 guardians general and then climbing up the 268 steps staircase. It is an extension of the nearby Po Lin monastery, where you can have a vegetarian meal by buying tickets at the base of the statue.

The statue was completed in 1993 and has also 3 internal exhibit floors where cameras are prohibited. These floors features inside a Buddha relic (alleged: the bones of Gautama Buddha).

Climbing up the stairs is no joke but the reward at the end is the view from the statue and the statue itself.

In 1993, the Tian Tan Buddha statue was finally unveiled. Made of bronze, it is one of the five largest Buddha statues in China, measuring 34 meters in height and weighing 250 tons. Buddha is seated on a lotus throne on a three-story circular platform – the Hall of the Universe, the Hall of Benevolent Merit and the Hall of Remembrance.

Surrounding the platform are six smaller bronze statues known as “Devas” who offer flowers, incense, lighting, ointment, fruit and music to the Buddha. All these offerings symbolize some of the virtues needed to reach Nirvana. You have to climb 268 steps to reach the top. Unlike most other large Buddha statues, the Tian Tan faces north so that it looks out over the Chinese people.
