The area
Neighbourhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.

Quiet and peaceful environment. St John’s Cathedral is the parish church with very long history in Hong Kong. You are welcomed to visit, pray and do meditation quietly. It's also great to take pictures outside.

The cathedral is the seat of the Anglican Church of Hong Kong.
It is an impressive building located right in the center of Hong Kong. Surrounded by a pleasant garden. The interior is a little cold, with nothing interesting

The church was built in 1849 in the British medieval Gothic style.
This is one of the oldest buildings in the city, the oldest Christian place of worship in Hong Kong and the oldest Anglican church in the Far East.

St. John's Cathedral is the oldest Anglican church in the Far East and one of the most important historic buildings in Hong Kong. Located on Garden Road, this is where the very first Sunday Service was held in Hong Kong in 1849.

The cathedral was constructed in Gothic Revival style, is of soft yellow coloured and features a single tower. In the distant past, the tower would have dominated the landscape of a mostly bare Hong Kong Island. Now it is lost in a sea of towering skyscrapers, holding onto its place in the past.

The interior of St. John's is subtle in its decor with a column lined nave, modest altar, pews and glass-stained windows. Its a peaceful place, a nice spot to have a seat and a rest on hot summer days.

Given its proximity to popular sightseeing in the Central District, visitors can conveniently include a visitor to St. John's Cathedral before/after Hong Kong Park, The Peak Tram and Zoological and Botanical Garden amongst others.

Note: St. John's is an active cathedral. Refer to their website for information regarding service times and schedule.

It seems Hong Kong exists to make money and the entice you to spend it!

It is refreshing to find the cathedral nestled in amongst the skyscrapers of mammon.

It is open and welcoming (no charge) a tranquil oasis of prayer and worship amidst the barren capitalism that surrounds it.

Attended the English speaking Anglican service at 9am. The place was packed out. Get there early or you will end up standing. Every nook has someone standing in it. Music was beautiful and the sound of an entire church singing is stunning.

...which clearly still has significance in the community, judging by all of its outreach programmes. It’s a peaceful, pretty building that’s worth stopping into.

Built in 1849 this historic Anglican Cathedral, nestling amongst the skyscrapers of the Central Banking District, located on Garden Road, (and just a stones throw from the Peak Tram Terminus), with its beautiful architecture and serenity is definitely worthy of a 30 minute stop on your way to the Peak Tram.

There is no entrance fee and it's open every weekday from 7:00am until 6:00pm and even later on a weekend, closing at 7:30pm.

In the grounds you will find the grave of Private R.D. Maxwell a volunteer defence soldier who died defending Hong Kong from the Japanese invaders on 23rd Dec 1941 aged just 22 years old.

I attended the spoken 8 am service, and the 9 am chanted service on Dec. 8th. The first service was sparsely attended, and the second was standing room only, with 40 people watching outside the front door. A bit of a challenge to understand. It was cold that morning, and the cathedral is built for the tropics. Would attend again, if I didn't live 8,000 miles away.

Walk through if you are near. Some very interesting history that is told with the walls of the cathedral. It’s not as old and historical as a lot of European cathedrals but still worth a quick walk through.
