A Top Koality Building?
Jan 2021
The Lippo Centre's unusual design has earned it the nickname of ‘the Koala Building’. Once someone has pointed out the koalas to you, you can't un-see them.
Along with the Bank of China and HSBC, the Lippo Centre is one of Hong Kong’s most recognisable buildings and is one of the defining buildings on the Hong Kong skyline.
All three buildings were constructed in the 1980s. Architecturally, it was an important decade that would have a huge impact on the Hong Kong skyline.
The two unequal, octagonal Lippo towers, clad in dark reflective glass, are strangely eye-catching but by far the strangest feature are the C-shaped extrusions. These are the bits that look pretty much like a bunch of over-sized koalas doing what koalas do best - hanging out on gum trees all day.
It is a commercial building with offices and retail so it’s open to the public. Those with a keen interest in architecture might want to go inside but for most of us, it’s enough to see it from the outside as you’re passing.

Hong Kong's Koala Towers
Jan 2021
Two of the skyscrapers that are easy to spot as part of the Hong Kong Skyline are the towers of the Lippo Centre in the Admiralty District at the corner of Queensway and Tamar Street. While far from being amongst the tallest buildings in the city at 42 and 46 floors, they offer up a unique architectural exterior that makes them easily recognisable while viewing the various skyscrapers found on Hong Kong Island.

The Lippo Centre was completed in 1988. The two buildings are octagonal in shape, featuring dark blue refractive glass and a unique design that is often described as resembling as series of koala bears clinging onto a tree. When viewed from a locations such as Hong Kong Park, one can easily make up the koalas climbing the Lippo Centre towers. On days with clear skies, these are amongst the more interesting skyscrapers to see in the area.

There are also dramatic mural works in the Lippo Centre ground floor lobby, the works of artist Gerard Henderson that are worth seeing as well if you are a fan of art.

Unusual Architecture
May 2019 • Couples
Not as prominent as I think used to be due to the numerous high rise offices that continue to be built but the shape itself presents a unique architecture. Unfortunately it’s not open to the public but does present great photo opportunities.

Excellent shopping mall
Oct 2018
Accessible via the MTR at the Admiralty, take exit B, turn left and the entrance is on your left hand side. Great selection of places to eat, and numerous snack options available as well as a varied array of shops, allow yourself 2/3 hours including time to eat, well worth a visit, fully air conditioned

Interesting shape
Oct 2017 • Friends
The twin towers of Lippo Center, Hong Kong headquarters for Lippo Group is in Admiralty area of the Island. The unusual shape of the buildings draws stares whenever people pass by. Not far from Pacific Place, the luxury mall you can get good viewing both day and night and passing by on the double decker trams. It stands in sharp contrast to the more square traditional skyscrapers in Hong Kong

An office building
Oct 2017 • Business
Lippo Group is located in Indonesia. The building here houses their headquarters in Hong Kong.

Look at the building's facade. For decades we have been convinced that monkeys are climbing the building. Interesting in that sense.

Australian Heritage
Oct 2017 • Couples
Although not the tallest they stand because of their shape, which is very interesting. I believe linked to the Australian beer magnate Alan Bond. Like many other buildings on Hong Kong Island, worth seeing.
