One of the enjoyable half day hikes through Ma On Shan Country Park include Buffalo Hill and Buffalo West Hill, which you can do as a loop trail from entry points into the country park near Tai Shui Hang or Shek Mun or as part of point-to-point routes through the country park. You've some options as there are a handful of ways to approach these two near twin peaks.
Buffalo Hill (606m) and West Buffalo Hill (611m) and just next to each other in the middle of a range through the country park. From atop both, hikers are afforded 360 degree panoramic views of the surrounding park as well as numerous notably places around Hong Kong in the distance. You can easily make out Sai Kung, Ma On Shan, Sha Tin as well as Tolo Harbour and Tai Po.
The geography and plant life changes quite a bit as you climb the two hills. The country park is heavily forested with streams and stretches of thicker vegetation at the lower levels, as you ascend the tree lines, you enter more shrubby areas which then give way to grassy peaks where trees give way to hillsides with much exposure to the sun, wind and rain but also to completely unobstructed, remarkable views - when sky conditions are favourable. It is a challenging but good hike, plenty of nice vegetation to see and at the top, fantastic views.
Note: Like the vast majority of Hong Kong's longer distance trails, there are no facilities once you get into the country park along the trails. As such, bring sufficient water, snacks, sunscreen and hat and be mindful of weather conditions before setting off.
Note: You can use hiking trail apps like AllTrails or Hiking Trails HK to plot and plan the route you want to take across or through Ma On Shan Country Park to visit the Buffalo Hills.

Ma on Shan peak. With a height of 702 metres (2,303 ft), it stands among the ten highest mountains in Hong Kong. The mountain borders Sha Tin and Tai Po districts. This is one of the best hikes I’ve done in Hong Kong and it is really worth you doing it.
It is best to start the hike at Ma On Shan BBQ site. There the trail leads up on the ‘family trail’ This will lead tp what looks like a dead end, ignore this and hop the fence. The real hike will begin . It starts off easy enough, with muddy but well defined path through the trees and vegetation.
The trees disappear and make way for lush green vegetation and mountainous vista ahead of you. Don’t stop, just keep going forward. The trail was excellent, the wind blowing and the fresh air around you. Invigorating
Keep going up the path, youll come to a dead end and a barrier. Igonore this, hop over it and continue going up. It gets steeper and more challenging as you go up but it;ll be worth it. The views also get better and better as you go.
The trail leads to what is known as Pyramid Peak, im unsure why I guess it kind of looks like a pyramid (maybe). What do you think?
The views from the top are simply awesome, and well worth the challengin climb. You’ll be glad you did it
To end the hike follow the signs and go back to a village and get the bus to Sai Kung. from there you can get a bus back into the city.

The Ma On Shan Country Park is a rural area located within the range of mountains overlooking the township of Ma On Shan just to the west of the Sai Kung Peninsula. The country park includes 2880 hectres of rigid landscape and includes a network of hiking trails frequented by Hongkongers eager for a day out in the countryside.
The terrain is dominated by peaks and mountain passes, featuring nice scenery as well as elevated seaside and harbour views that can be quite rewarding when sky conditions are favourable. Trails are rugged but generally well maintained. There is a nice variety of distance and difficulty to them. One in particular that is quite popular is the Ma On Shan Country Trail which weaves its way through the range, linking Ma On Shan to the seaside village of Sai Kung.
This is a point-to-point trail that is officially around 3.9 km in distance. However, trailhead is round 2.5 km away from the Ma On Shan township and ends around 2 km from the main Sai Kung village area. Many prefer to skip the first 2.5 km in Ma On Shan, taking a taxi from the township to the Country Park entrance where the trail begins. Otherwise, you can simply walk up the road leading to the park.
The trail is easy to follow. It is mostly made up of stone staircases and stretches of natural rural trail that is well signposted. There will likely be other hikers as well, particularly on weekends so no need to worry about getting off-trail and lost in the country park.
At mid-trail you will find yourself on a plateau and open grasslands. From here there are really nice views down to the seaside village of Sai Kung. The continued walk down through forest mountainside, similar to what is experienced on the way up from the Ma On Shan side. You eventually arrive at the upper village of Tai Shui Tseng. From here you simply wind your way down the streets towards Sai Kung.
In the end, it is a good trail, good bit of exercise and you end up in Sai Kung where there are some nice restaurants for a recovery drink or lunch before setting off back home. Sai Kung is well connected to the rest of the city by way of buses and taxis.

I walked from Wu Kai Sha to Sai Kung over the hunchbacks, ma on shan and puramid hill. The whole walk took about 3.5 hours.
The first section from Wu Kai Sha to the hunchbacks was quite challenging it was very steep an involved scrambling in places. The rest of the walk is pretty easy. Great views towards Shatin and Sai Kung on rhe way.
The walk is only about 8km but the 900m vertical ascent descent provides the challenge.

Ma On Shan Country Park is a decent place for a short hike with some decent views of the coastal area between Wu Kai Sha and Sai Kung. Its not amazing and not worth your time if you are a visitor to Hong Kong but its a good place if you live in the N.T. A better option is to go further up the road to Sai Kung, which has been trails for hiking and is close to a better community for catching a light meal, drink or snack after your hike.

Ma On Shan Country Park is easily accessible via MTR to Hang Hau and bus 101M to Sai Kung. It will take less than an hour from central HK. The park offers access to the country side, and a break from the busy city center. Beautiful view from the top of the hill. Please remember to bring supply of water or drinks as you will need them. The ascent / decent to Sai Kung is steep, so be prepared for that. Rocks are slippery when wet, and trails are muddy. This is a hike, not a walk in the park.

This is an informal trek across the Ma On Shan Shan Country Park making use of two trails, the Mau Ping Ancient Trail between Tai Shui Hang and the Mau Ping Resting Area + the Pak Kong Trail which then continues onward to Sai Kung Village. Below are the details for how to complete this combined trail and what points of interest you will see along the way.
The Mau Ping Ancient Trail starts at Tai Shui Hang and makes way to the ancient (now abandoned) village of Mau Ping. You begin at Chevalier Garden Estate (outside the Tai Shui Hang MTR Station) and hike nearly 3.8 km gradually upwards to the Mau Ping Resting Area deep within the country park. The trail is mostly very easy to walk and accessible for families. Do note, when it has rained the ancient stone steps can be rather slippery.
The first 1.8 km is simply following the paved road from the MTR Station up to Mui Tsz Lam Village. Once you enter the village, just stick to the paved trail on the left which takes you past the village where the proper ancient trail begins. If you walk through the village, just keep veering to the left and you'll end up working yourself to the same trail and off you go. The trail at this point is the classic old stone steps placed by villagers perhaps a couple centuries ago.
The ancient trail goes through nearly 2 km of fairly lush forest, which is beautiful on wet and cloudy days. Loads of tall and mature trees and lots of shade along the way. You will eventually arrive at the abandoned village of Mau Ping. Here you will find some old building ruins along with one house in particular which remains standing just beside the trail. This is the Mau Ping House. Take a picture or two and then you can continue onward.
A few hundred metres past the old village, you will reach the Mau Ping Resting Area where the ancient trail ends. Here you can see the giant twisted vine that is located in the back of the resting area. You'll see a small entrance into the forest, around 5-6 metres in you'll see a giant twisted vine resting upon the remains of an old concrete structure. The vine is beautiful and huge, a really cool specimen to see along the trail.
From the Resting Area, this is where you can join up with Pak Kong Trail to Sai Kung village. Here you trek almost completely downhill along the same ancient stone steps you walked on the Mau Ping Ancient Trail for around 1.8 km until you reach Pak Kong Village. Remember, if wet, the stones can be slippery so be careful. Otherwise, on dry days, it is not an issue.
Note: As you approach Pak Kong, you will find yourself in a really neat bamboo forest. Keep yours eyes peeled for a couple of spots where the tall bamboo shoots on the side of the trail have bent over, creating a tunnel effect and prompting the informal name of this area - The Bamboo Tunnel.
From the Bamboo Tunnel, just proceed further down to Pak Kong and then onward to Sai Kung around 2 km away on foot. From there have a meal, round of drinks and walk along the promenade before catching public bus back to the city.

...plus it’s relatively easy to reach from
Sha Tin, Sai Lung or north Kowloon. Very clean and well maintained tracks, understandably popular on weekends and public holidays.

This is another country walk trail in Hong Kong. The starting point is Ma On Shan Country Park Barbecue site. You can get there by taking minibus NR84 from Ground floor of Sunshine City Plaza next to Ma On Shan MTR station. The bus only accepts cash, no change and no card.
After you reach the barbecue site, you will find a map that marked the route of the country trail and there is toilet and vending machine at the site. Follow the direction where the bus goes next, that is the starting point of the trail.
You can find wooden signs and distance poles along the trail. Distance poles are from C3302 to C3308 for this trail. They are both a sign of progress and location description in case of emergency. The upward trip is mainly concrete or stone steps which is easy, it takes around 1 hour to get to the top where it is one of the rarest highland in Hong Kong.
The downward trip is made up of irregular marbles and stones which should be careful when descending. It takes another 1 hour to get down to the finishing point in Sai Kung. When you reach the concrete path, just walk along forward until you see villages and roads. Then keep walking forward along the road you will see a toilet after 15 minutes, then there is a minibus station ahead where you can take it to Sai Kung Town Centre in 10 minutes.
