Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a nice large clean venue for Cantonese dim sim lunch. It is located within the Hong Kong City Hall where one will find many other civic activities going on. The variety of dishes on offer are many and much more than one can find in the Western countries. There is usually a long queue during lunch hours 12-2pm. Best to avoid long queue.

I never thought I'd review a City Hall, but the one in Hong Kong provides a perfect long afternoon. Among other things (unreviewed here) it contains both Maxim's restaurant, and a lovely concert hall.
Maxim's is purported to be the best dim sum restaurant in Hong Kong. In a city where this restaurant style originated, and where you'll find dozens of excellent dim sum places, that's purely subjective, but it's very good. For instance, the small spare rib pieces were the meatiest and best I've ever had. The octopus, not a common dim sum dish, was crunchy and excellently flavored. We had the usual array of dim sum offerings, and there wasn't a clunker in the bunch, including dessert. Starting with the costumed receptionist barking out reservation numbers like an auctioneer, it was fun. Service is no better than other dim sum places of comparable (large) size, and the usual language barriers popped up (we asked for stuffed peppers and got a pepper shaker). It's a bit pricey, but the view is nice and it's worth the experience.
The concert hall is a comfortable, human sized, modern hall with excellent acoustics.
Here's what to do: Buy tickets for a matinee performance at the theatre. Go upstairs and get a number (or judge when to get a number) to wait for a seat at Maxim's (on weekends, waits can be over an hour). Dim sum ends at 3 pm, so you shouldn't have a problem timing your exit. Take a walk or watch any festivities on the plaza in front of the building (there was a Philippine fashion show the day we went), have a nice, relaxing meal, and finish off with a concert. A lovely way to spend an afternoon.

I love the atmosphere of the concert: Chinese folk orchestra with standardized mode and improved acoustic, people come here to enjoy their culture. This shows the real vibe of the city. The hall’s acoustic may be a bit worse than HKCC for orchestra music but is still good to my ear.

It was the second time I attended a performance there. 12 years ago I saw Mamma Mia and now Bizet's opera Carmen . It didn't change much during this period except for a new service yielded by a group of the electronic ticket machines . Even though I did a last minute purchase and not many seats were left by then I found the seats perfect even if not close enough. The theatre had only one flaw: not enough and easy to access restaurants and food courts and food choices for such a huge audience.

I was thinking this might be a building of historical significance or at least be interesting-looking, but alas, it's just another sterile, modern building.

This review is more for clarification as it may be confusing in hearing people say go to City Hall for lunch or dinner. What they really mean is go to Maxim's Palace for dim sum and food on a trolley, etc. etc. it is located in the old city hall building, also know as Edinburgh Place. Once you arrive at the Central stop of MTR, you will see the new city hall building. To the right of this is a small parking garage, walk thru the garage to the other side, thru the courtyard to the older building, and Maxim's Palace is on the second floor. This is where you want to go for Maxim's Palace for dim sum. See my separate review for Maxim's. it is not in the new city hall building.

Not sure if many people know but this place is excellent for lunch especially dim sum. You sit in the banquet hall, they come around with the trolleys serving you food. Very very tasty and most delicious.
There seemed to be a lot of city folk here and not many tourists at all.
Outstanding food!!

The HK City Hall is fairly large complex with lowrise with concert hall and surprisingly rich and good programme of concerts, and a 11/12 story highrise with a nice exhibition space on the 7th floor and a public library, both for aduts and for children. There are numerous temporary exhibits - on the afternoon I visited there was a very pleasant show of landscape and fauna ink scroll paintings by three local artists.... During weekdays, the place is busy with wedding groups as the Marriage Registry is in the same building.....

Hong Kong City Hall is multiple purpose culture complex that opened in 1962 at Edinburgh Place at Connaught Road Central. There are a couple of venues including a concert hall and theatre where regular performances are held. You can refer to the City Hall Website Programmes page to see schedule. There is an exhibition gallery within City Hall that is used for special exhibitions from time to time.
While technically not City Hall the Edinburgh Place is also where you will find City Gallery which is a free multi floor, permanent exhibition that focuses on city planning and development of Hong Kong. This is a free attraction that is open to the public from 10am to 6pm (Mon, Wed & Thurs) and 10am to 7pm (Fri to Sun), closed on Tuesdays.
There is also a Memorial Garden just outside City Hall which is dedicated citizens and soldiers that died defending Hong Kong during WWII. There is a War Shrine and interesting sculptures there for those who pass by and want to have a look.

The Hong Kong City Hall, is located off Connaught Road at Edinburgh Place in here in Hong Kong Central. I have been coming here for years because there is a very nice library on the upper floors with an excellent computer center on the 6th floor with computers set up with English Language Keyboards. You can make advance reservations if you choose and the computer center is open seven days a week.
There is also a very nice Art Gallery on the 7th floor with very pleasant showings from time to time.
The building itself is also very attractive. Is this a do-not-miss attraction? No it is not. But I still rate it as excellent because of its above facilities. And I have not even mentioned Maxim's Cafe and the Memorial Garden on the Harbor side of City Hall.
