Des Voeux Road West is major throughput road on Hong Kong Island and scene to the famous dried seafood market that lines the road in the Western District. This is a fun place to see shop after shop of local dealers vying for local retail and export distribution of a wide variety of dried seafood and other traditional herbs, medicines, tonics and items you will rarely see on the streets of western cities around the world.

You can walk down Des Voeux Road seeing and photographing the many interesting shops. Alternatively, take the historic Ding-Ding tram, which slowly plods along down the middle of the road. Make sure to grab an upstairs seat and just enjoy the sights and smells of Des Voeux Road. You can take good pictures from the upper level at the regular Ding-Ding stops.

Overall, Des Voeux Rd is a very interesting wholesale scene, similar to other local market streets in the area such as nearby Ko Shing (Chinese Medicine Street), Bonham Strand (Gingseng Street) and Wing Lok (Bird's Nest Street) that you will find in Sheung Wan. You can spend an hour or so browsing these street markets and have a nice time. Then carry on with other intended sightseeing you have on Hong Kong Island.

Des Voeux Road West is a section of road that has historically been the scene of an active dried seafood market. This stretch of road is known as the Dried Seafood Street and it is a fun place to visit in Hong Kong.

Here you can find a a cluster of shops dealing in various dried seafood and other exotic products which are commonly used as ingredients for traditional Chinese tonics, medicines and for cooking.

You can walk this area in Sheung Wan/Western District and enjoy the street shops or you can see the market by transiting Des Voeux Road via the historic Ding-Ding tram, which slowly makes it way along Dried Seafood Street.

In addition to visiting the Dried Seafood Street, the nearby Ko Shing (Medicinal Street) is another area where shops have even more exotic items used found in Chinese herbal and traditional medicines. This is another great area to walk around and see Hong Kong's distant past, thriving side-by-side with the modern world which has engulfed the area.

Note: Some shopkeepers are happy to let you take photos of their shops in the the old street markets. However, others are not so keen to be photographed. Just point to your camera and they will nod either way so its easy to see if its ok or a problem.

Visited this area whilst walking from Kennedy station to Central.

Loved the food stalls which are traditional and not McDonalds prepared food. Saw numerous places to get breakfast where a person on the footpath in front of their shop cooking and serving directly to their clients.

Small shops, preparing the food in plain sight. This is what I thought Hong Kong would be like, more Asian less Western.

A great place to wander, you could spend an hour just exploring.

We love walking through different areas of the city and this area definitely is unique with the smell of dried fish and the incredible types of food you can see and smell along the walk. There are many shops and you can stop, look around and purchase if you are brave. I imagine that this is what old school Hong Kong or China would have been like. If you are visiting Hong Kong and want to experience all areas, walk along DeVoeux and Queens Road from end to end and you will traverse an incredible amount of different sights, smells, people watching and more!!

You turn a little corner from the temple and antiques area and there you are right in the middle of this little market alley way with the freshest vegetables and fruits and all manner of foods stuff, the likes of which you may not have seen before. All in the vividest of colors!

Located on a steep street you will want to approach from the top and work your way down.

A very fascinating part of the city. We had the chance to explore it greatly as our hotel was here. Some parts were a bit gritty but interesting nevertheless. A lot of small shops selling wares of all sorts but mostly dry foods. Take a walk and explore or ride the tram trolley as it follows this road as it traverses Hong Kong Island.

we walked along this road under the scorching 2pm sun searching for our hotel in HK right after we docked at the shun tak center terminal. carrying our bags while looking for the name of the skyscrapers was a struggle. and the familiar smell of dried fishes and other land creatures was quite peculiar. this road is long and winding - an urban jungle in this northwest part of HK.
