The area
Neighbourhood: Jordan / Yau Ma Tei
The Jordan and Yau Ma Tei neighbourhood is where you will find some of the more authentic areas of Hong Kong. Not as glamourous or busy as its neighbours Mong Kok to the north or Tsim Sha Tsui to the south, Yau Ma Tei is often mistakenly overlooked by visitors on their trips to Hong Kong. Exploring parts of this area makes you feel like you’ve been transported back in time. A large part of the neighbourhood draws from the rich history of Temple Street, stretching from Jordan to Yau Ma Tei, where a mix of dai pai dongs (outdoor restaurants), market stalls, fortune tellers and old karaoke bars bring out the history and culture of the area. The neighbourhood is a showcase of diversity – different ethnicities, cultures, and a mix of old and new.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This listing refers to the public community garden which can be found on both the east and west side of the important Tin Hau Temple along Nathan Road in Yau Ma Tei.

The garden on the west side of the temple is larger and includes large Banyan trees which provide quite a bit of shade for the many park benches and checkers tables that are regularly used by locals using the garden for a rest and to get out of the sun. There is a nice archway structure you can use to enter the garden on the west side.

On the east side of the temple is a small public garden section that includes a replica of the Nine Dragon Wall (original in Beijing). This is really nice to see as part of your visit to the Tin Hau Temple.

A small respite off Nathan rd, that seems the go-to place for local players.

Restful area with trees and sitting areas next to the temple. Congregate for a rest from the shopping or just a rest from the heat.

Nice little park for sitting out right next to Nathan Road and the Temple.

Tin hau temple. Temple street. Lots of markets. Lots of locals doing daily business. Worth a look to see normal hong kong. Easy to find as all the streets link into each other.

A street in Yau Ma Tei district, along the way from Mong Kok to Tsim Tsa Chui. A small gathering place in front of Tin Hau temple, with government warning about the “deep” pond of about 20 cm depths. Older people playing mah jong or other Chinese board games in this elevated small park. Behind this park is a complex of temples comprises of Tin Hau Temple, a Shing Wong Temple, a Kwun Yum temple, Shea Tan and Hsu Yuen. An open space in front of the temples are Temple Night Market. Going further from the temple is Jade Market. This spot in Kow Loon feels like the old time HK, old places with old people, contrast with Nathan road and Harbor City. I missed the nine dragon wall featured in this temple which is similar to the one at the Forbidden City.
