    “Pearl of Jinling (present-day Nanjing)”
As the only remaining imperial garden south of the Yangtze River, Xuanwu Lake is known as the “Pearl of Jinling (present-day Nanjing).” It is the best spot in Nanjing’s urban area to watch the sunset blending into the city skyline. Boating on Xuanwu Lake is another way to appreciate the lake’s beauty, like entering a picturesque scroll painting. Xuanwu Lake is also the “birds’ living room” of the city, where one can observe migrating birds and other avian wonders.

    Beautiful park!
What a great place to walk around and just relax near the water and greenery. Flowers everywhere. I went there on a public holiday and it was quite crowded, but even so, after walking around for some time, I found a lovely place to sit down and read among the trees. So nice and relaxing.

Lovely Lake and Wall in Nanjing
Perfect day for friends or family. The lake is surrounded by the city walls, which can be accessed at various pints along the way, for a small fee. The lakeside is really well kept and lots of people enjoying different activities. Boats are available to hire etc and there are snack options within the park area. the wall itself can be a bit uneven to walk around so consider your footwear.

Xuanwu lake is pretty muck ok place for a visit. We got there through the main entrance. It was pretty cold evening when we walked around the islands. During the evening the lights made the place much prettier than during day time. I believe most tourists would visit this area when in Nanjing. You can come here just for a short walk. Or you could just jog around the lake. There are many boat operators as well. Shame fishing is not allowed. Cycling on islands seems also banned.

We went here late in the day as part of our Nanjing tour. There’s a tram that takes you through the five islands. Since we don’t speak Chinese our guides made sure we sat with them so we could have someone tell us what we were seeing. It was quite busy as it was a beautiful day, and glad we had tour guides/translators. There are a variety of things to do, including swan boat rentals. It was a good place to end our tour as it isn’t too far from the train station.

Huge lake. There are 5 islets across this lake so plenty to explore and experience. We were there on the last day of the Coffee Festival so that was extra for us. However, it was realllllllly crowded.

...especially if you’ve been to many other beautiful lakes in China or other countries. More for locals who go there for some leisure.

The Xuanwu lake in Nanjing is a beautiful setting. The lake occupies 444 hectares of prime land and has a circumference of 15 km. There is no entrance fee surprisingly. The lake and parks are well maintained. Litter is minimal. Though the place is overcrowded, you will always find a nook or corner for yourself. Plenty of space and beautiful settings. Different type of boats are available - pedal type, battery powered and even large houseboats. Enjoy a serene trip across the lake.

There are several parks too where you can get immersed in the nature. There is a children park with dinosaurs which were swaying to music. An orchestra was belting out at one end. Another end had a chinese band. One open hall was having a congregation of physically handicapped.

There are lots of snack bars everywhere. Then there are numerous stalls for the tourists to pick up some novelties. The entrance is below the Nanjing wall. You will find a toy train with three carriages plus several battery powered vehicles that can carry about 10 passengers, all operated by ladies. A 30 RMB fee (30 min trip) will take you around the parks and lake. You need more than a day if you want to explore the facility yourself. And be prepared for a lot of walking.

It is quite easy to reach this place. If you are coming by metro, get down at Xuanwu gate in the direction of Maigaoquio on Line I. It is also close to Nanjing Railway station and the Hongshan Zoo.

The Xuanwu lake and park is close to the city centre but really works well as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of an 8 million plus city. It is very well maintained and spotlessly clean. It's a worthwhile visit for anyone with a half day to absorb a different side of this fantastic city

Just outside the old city walls, you can find Xuanwu Lake. Walk around the lakeshore, or just meander for a stretch and circle back toward the city proper. There are also bridges if you’d like to visit the islands in the middle of the lake.

Grassy banks surround the water (see photo). It seems an ideal spot for a picnic lunch or a stroll, but I don’t see the appeal of walking the entirety of the paths, or devoting a whole afternoon.

Paddle boats are available for rent, and inevitably clog up the lake, which surely must detract from an afternoon of relaxation.

A good place for families with young children or elderly people wanting some easy exercise. The walking paths are paved and flat, and there are plenty of places to sit or lie down for awhile.
