Sacred place
Jan 2020
I had expected this to be more of an art gallery but on my visit, I found that it was a mere religious sacred destination, frequented by Buddhist monks.

Small but Impressive Place of Religious Importance
Dec 2019
The cliffside is located on the outer religious circle in Lhasa and is mostly frequented by local devotees. The cliffside has numerous buddha figurines etched and painted on the cliffside along with the religious Tibetan scriptures

Interesting to see
Jun 2018 • Couples
We had expected something a bit bigger so were initially disappointed that this cliffside was so small in size, It grew on us, however, especially when we paid a little bit and were able to tour one of the chapels next to the images. It had interesting statues and allowed photos, so it was well appreciated. The shrine attracted pilgrims with hip length braids from the countryside and was a nice, short visit.

Carvings look impressive. The area is less crowded than the central part, therefore its more quiet and peaceful. It doesn't take a long time to walk there.

Chagpo Ri Rock Carvings
Jul 2016 • Family
In the Lonely Planet guide book this attraction is known as Chagpo Ri Rock Carvings, Yangwang Mountain is the Chinese name for the same place. Both translate to "Iron Mountain". It is the hill south west of the Potalla Palace where there is now located a radio tower.

However, to see the main rock carvings you need to approach from the south side of the mountain off of Deji ZongLu (Dickey Lam in Tibetan). There is a small alley off of Deji ZongLu that leads directly to the carvings. You could walk here from the Potalla in about 30 minutes. I took a pedicab from the old town which took about 40 minutes then I walked back to the Potalla and on to the old town whcih took about 2 hours in total.

There is a large Buddha carved and painted into the rock face surrounded by hundreds of other Buddhas. This is covered by a temple-like roof that protects them from the elements. Up the path a bit there is an a temple that is blend of Indian and Tibetan in appearance. Almost pyramid like. This is surrounded by prayer wheels.

Further up the path there are about 100-200 meters of smaller carvings and paintings on the rock face. Pilgrims have left many offerings here stuffed into the rock spaces.

This attraction is definitely worthwhile visiting if you have some spare time in Lhasa away from your tour. I don't understand why the tour operators skip by this place as you can easily see the whole thing in about 30 minutes (assuming you were dropped at the gate).

You can only see so many Monasteries and temples without getting bored. This is something a little bit different.

Apparently there is supposed to be a small charge to visit. However, I just walked right in and didn't see any ticket booth.

On the pilgrimage road up to the hill opposit the renowned Potala Palace, there are thousands of colorful Buddha painting on the wall.

You will see local people praying while walking up to the temple as well.

At the main monastery, people are making merit by praying and offering the butter candles.

Thousand buddha mountain
Jul 2015 • Solo
this place we local says thousand buddha mountain. That is located between the summer potala palace and winter norbu lingkha palace. Also locate on the outermost kora (circle) of lhasa where you see hundreds of tibetans going around the circle . On this mountain had carved 1000 images of buddha and also near you can see the Buddhist scriptures were written on the slates and piles of slates formed like a hill.

Nice diversion, right downtown

A nice site, close to Potala Palace, with more or less 1,000 images carved into a Cliffside. Very colorful. Can be visited in an hour or less. In the afternoon of our visit, there were some pilgrims but it was not crowded. Worth a visit.
