- FlurinSwitzerland42 contributionsGorgeous and free!Gorgeous and you get a free tour of the place! Finding where the tour starts isn't easy so here is a quick guide: When entering through gate nr 5 turn left. Turn right to walk between the two small buildings, one of them says Bank on it. You'll see very dark tinted glass windows and a door on your left. That's where you have to go. Or you just stand around lost in the middle of the place and wait until a guide comes back from a tour and picks you up (that's what we did). There you'll get clothes to cover up if necessary and they'll show you around the Mosque for 20-30 minutes, everything is 100% free.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 December 2023

Highly recommended and suggest appropriate clothing is worn. Also be aware if you are unfit or unable to climb about 4 large flights of stairs this may not be a suitable tour for you.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 December 2023
- Dan LBunbury, Australia8,536 contributionsLargest Mosque in Southeast Asia. Our guide told us that this is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and in the world with a capacity for 120,000 worshippers. The idea for the mosque dates to 1945 after the proclamation of Indonesian independence but the foundation stone was not laid until 1961 and the building inaugurated in 1978. The site was chosen by President Sukarno as it was near Merdeka Square and also to promote religious harmony with the nearby Catholic Cathedral and Immanuel Church, respectively Catholic and Protestant. I have visited more ornate mosques but nothing with the dimensions of Istiqlal. Seven entrances named after the names of God in Islam, 45m diameter dome to symbolise the year of independence, a minaret which is 66.66m high and representing the oneness of God and the 6,666 verses of the Quran.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 December 2023

Incoming tourist are guided to a waiting room, in which you side up for tour service (provides basic information, such as family name, country of origin, etc.). The information is not checked. During the guided tour of the Mosque, you will be asked to remove your shoes before entering the mosque. A bag is provided to carry your shoes. You are also provided with Hajib, though it seems to be optional during the visit. The guided tour takes a quick walk around the Mosque, which has 5 floors and may accommodate up to 120,000 people. Great facilities inside, and clean. Lots of small stalls outside of the masjid selling snacks, drinks, souvenirs etc.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 17 July 2024

Went to visit this place because there aren’t much places to see in Jakarta.
Took a Grab to visit Catholic Church then walked across the street to the mosque.
Outside was so dirty and lot of people. As for non Muslim you have to sign in and they took you to a room to leave your shoes and belongings in the locker, they gave you robes to wear if you wear shorts and shortsleeved tops and you can’t walk on the carpet. You have to pay the guy after your done
Inside the mosque was bare and people were laying on the floor everywhere. The place was kind of rundown, not very clean floor and some constructions were going on.

We gowned up (robes supplied) and went barefoot on an informative guided tour of the Mosque with guide Didi.
He provided lots of interesting information about the architecture, design, facts, and figures of the design and construction of the Mosque which he told us was the third largest in the world and can hold up to 200,000 people.
Didi also outlined the significant factors linking the Mosque to Indonesian Independence and was quite an accomplished photographer too!
The building is on 5 levels, but we only went up two levels and were able to take the stairs slowly and steadily without any difficulty. It could be a factor for those with mobility issues.
The cooling cross-ventilation was terrific on a very hot afternoon in Jakarta.
It also provided a good vantage point for pics of the Catholic Cathedral spires which were hard to capture at the cathedral.
The tour was a terrific freebie and much appreciated. Recommended for a cool, quiet hour or so.

The architecture itself is very plain, more like Soviet Union rather than stylish elegant traditional Arabic style, even similar to a parking lot I would say. The tour guide was very rude and offensive. I had to input my personal information into their computer. Instead of leaving me do it myself, he kept on verbally rushing me through though his right hand on the mouse was actually quite slow, and no one was behind me to rush for. He got quite pissed just because his rude service was rejected. Then he said I needed to wait for 1 hour. I got quite surprised but then it turned out to be just 1 second, a vicious joke. He asked me to stay in this small room and wait, and my 10kg backpack had already worn me out, but there was no seat, not even a single space to stand, shoe scattering everywhere. He just laughed it away. Suddenly everyone stood up and started to move out, he also rushed me here and there, do this and do that, like I'm just his pet, without the very least politeness and respect. I truly believe he is racist against non-religionists and Chinese! He was also quite rude to the local prayers, no lying, no sleeping, no resting, like he is a school master, bishop or GOD self. His sharing, totally 5 min, was also quite boring and occasionally wrong. Trust me, you will get more from Wikipedia. Anyway a modern building like this won't have much to talk about either, especially weaving with Indonesian nationalism and independence myth. Female toilet is basically unusable, filled with water up to the ankle.

The mosque👍. The officer👍. If it's early in the morning for morning prayers, park in front of the main door, parking is expensive, 250 thousand. Cleaning fee 30 thousand. Please tidy up the illegal parking lots. Is it true that if it's still early in the morning you can't park in the parking lot?

Finally before going home I decided to visit the Istiqlal Masjid, which is located very conveniently near the place I stayed. Moreover, I thought my experience would be a kind of magic because the holy month has just started. But things appear to be too complicated for a person like me who is not following any official faith, including Islam, and is a foreigner. Twice I tried to enter, and twice I was rejected. First time they said it is too late for tourists and I should come the other day (tomorrow) starting from 10 AM. Well, it was frustrating, but I said allright for myself - I'll give it another try. The other day... uff. the other day literally drove me mad. The guard didnt let me in because 'specifically on fridays the mosque is closed for tourists'. It was too much for me. They literally said to me - you are not allowed, because we are normal people, and you are not. You are a tourist and dont deserve our celestial glory.... Thats is really frustrating and unfair,
I put one of five because this place is unavailable for me, it doesnt mean it is bad for a 'normal person'.

Istiqlal Mosque is one of the largest in the world. Opened in 1978 by the first President of Indonesia Soekarno. A must see for the travelers to Jakarta. It will be a nice spiritual experience for the Muslim travelers to pray in this mosque together with a large gathering.

This is a beautiful, modern mosque in Jakarta. It's huge and very pretty inside. But, the best part was the Guide from the mosque who was extremely knowledgeable and explained the meaning behind everything we were seeing (we are not Muslim). He took the time to educate us about not only the mosque itself, but the religion. He even sang the morning prayer to us and explained what it meant. I've visited many mosques but never received the education that I received on this visit.

It's a fascinating place. The decoration is very nice and people who enter feel peaceful. It is in a central location, but there is no place to leave a car nearby. There are places selling food and beverages in the mosque courtyard. The biggest shortcoming is the sinks. Unfortunately it is not clean. This situation does not suit a mosque. It is useful to be sensitive about this issue.

Boys can enter in the Mosque with short trousers (at the knees) ?
Written 18 August 2018
Sarong (man) and kaffetani (women) are available at the info point at the entrance. The mosque is viewable only with a guide, English speaking for a donation. Obviously not shoes . I think under the knees trouser is accettable.

Is there a dress code inside the mosque for men? Thank you.
Written 5 September 2017
If you take a tour, which you will most likely have to do, there is a small area to keep your shoes (which you need to take off at the very entrance to the mosque). If you are dressed inappropriately, they will give you a robe to cover up that you return when the tour is finished.

Hi everyone :) how long does it take from airport to istiqlal mosque by taxi?
Written 20 July 2017
I can answer my question now :) it takes 40-60 min from airport to mosque by taxi. Taxi drivers want 190-250 rupiah. We made a deal with a taxi driver from airport to city center tour that takes 5 hours. Driver had taken us from airport, take to the city center, we went to mosque, cathedral, and symbol of the city -can't remember name, may be national monument- We paid 600 rupiah
