Sunda Kelapa port was once the gateway to the island. Actually this was the name of the city of Jakarta for the longest period- for almost 1150 years. Name came from kingdom of Sunda. Today Jakarta has a new modern harbour for commercial and passenger operations, but Sunda Kelapa port still works as a major hub for small scale transportation... More

An easy stroll along the quayside to look at these impressive wooden vessels. They used to be sail only but now combine diesel engines with wind power, whenever the wind is favorable.

The port itself is a great historic site, but unfortunately, it may be dangerous or at the very least uncomfortable to visit by yourself. There are groups of fisherman waiting around and staring at newcomers. It is not walkable because it is immensely large, and one has to travel through its wide dirty roads to get around it. It is... Sunda Kelapa is Jakarta's old name and this is a 500 years old harbour. This is a busy old harbour in in the mouth of Ciliwung River, in North Jakarta.

We turned up here in the pouring rain. No idea what to expect. Met a guy, 3 foot 6 inch and apparently an official tour guide. He was fantastic. For 10 dollars each, he took us around the large local commercial boats. Then out on a wooden boat thing around the harbour. Best of all we moored alongside one of... More

Unless you have an affinity with all things maritime, this place is not a big miss if you decide to skip it. The place is hot and dusty and you will see a long line of sea-going vessels, and not much else. If you are interested, and invited by the ship's captain (for a fee, of course), you may go... More

After finished my visit to Maritim Museum, Mr. Catur offered me to take a travel with indonesian fishermen through harbour within Jakarta Bay; he got me walking through a very poor suburb til get Sunda Kelapa Port; then without life vest started the travel in a classic indonesian boat (pinsi) toward the open bay, then visit a huge fish boat.... We walked from the Fish market, to the Sunda Kelapa harbour past the Watchtower and the Batavia harbour. We started by the Maritime museum and were looking forward walking though smelly stalls of the Fish market only to find mountains of rubble. The fish market was demolished and there is nothing left there to remind you of its origins, history,... More

Neat place to see the ships. Got some great photos. It would be even cooler if you befriend a sailor and got to go on one of the ships.

This is a beautiful place to visit just to view the old port with its magnificent boats which are probably the same as those that lay there 200 hundred years ago. Great for photos.
