Pros:
1) Easy to access to: Cab, Grab, Uber, local hired driver - chances are all would know how to get to Thamrin City Mall
2) Relatively cheap: Things here are a lot cheaper than the ones of similar quality in in other major cities in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Brunei etc. Definitely cheaper than most (if not all) retail stores in Jakarta itself. The prices range from it-was-so-cheap-I-bought-ten-of-it to how-many-million-rupiah-did-you-say-it-was-again...even then it is still probably abt 20% cheaper than the same thing in a retail Jakarta mall.
3) You can still bargain: Despite prices starting off being cheaper than most places, you can still somewhat bargain for a lower price. If you buy in bulk e.g. even if it’s 10pcs of scarves, you will get a better price on each (usually without even the hassle of bargaining).
4) Good variety: Think Tanah Abang on a smaller, less intimidating scale. Largely known for its collection of batik, clothes for children and esp. for Muslim women (and anyone who wishes to dress modestly), scarves, Muslim prayer mat and dress, sarongs, accessories & even knock-off ‘designer’ shoes. Great place to get souvenirs.
Cons:
1) Plenty of stalls in quite a cramped setting: There’s not much walking space between stalls and stalls are small esp when there are more than 2 customers at one stall but considering it’s air conditioned, no one really gets hot and bothered..
2) Takes time to see everything: I’ve been here 3x and for max 2 hrs each time. I nvr seem to be able to finish even one floor.
3) Need to be discerning re quality: Some of the really cheap ones may be just that...cheap.
4) No changing rooms: At least I haven’t seen any, so dress appropriately so you can try on clothes behind a clothes rack.
Be Prepared:
1) Wear comfortable clothes and shoes
2) Remember which lobby/exit you entered at and maybe choose 1-2 ‘landmarks’ per floor so you don’t spend precious time getting lost
3) Bring cash - even though they take CC think sometimes it’s easier to get a better price with cash
4) Allocate enough time to shop else it can get frustrating - believe me!
P/S: If it’s your first time here and you find it’s not your kind of ‘mall’ then Grand Indonesia (mid to upmarket) and Plaza Indonesia (high end) are within walking distance (abt 10mins)

If you ride with uber..the driver will call you beforehand to ask the destination. If the destination they refuse to drive you to..they will cancel..even you have waited for long time for the car to get to ur place
but the trick is they will call you about less than 5minutes to the pickup point.
When i knew this trick.i did not reply to any of the text or call.then once the driver arrived..then he knew the destination..he shouted to me no way! Then he asked me to cancel myself
I refused..then he just waited for 3minutes then he cancelled with the reason i did not show up at the pickup point.
I made a complaint at uber regarding this as i was charge for cancellation fee.
So rude and bad attitude of the driver in Jakarta. To all the tourist pls ignore the call frm the driver once u made the booking.
It was so stressful after waiting for 20minutes then they cancel 3minutes to the time.if the driver has arrived and they refuse they will be penalised. Just let them bear the cancellation fee.

Indonesian batik has a distinct pattern which is different from that of my home country. If you are looking for local batik designs head to Thamrin City to shop! You get row upon row of Batik prints. But be warned though, after a few rows of going through designs the batik prints will start to look similar.
All in all, worth a visit!

Visited this shopping centre. Make sure get the list you want in hand plus your budget. No time to check all as you may get tired going back to the previous lot you liked.
The only thing is there is no dressing room for you to try. So just try your luck. It may look good, but not really fit since you are trying it with your shirt / dress on.
Walk and shop until you drop.
Reasonable price.

I previously wrote a review in Jan 2018 - at the time, I had not reached the Pusat Batik (Batik Centre). This time I spent abt 3 hours at the batik centre alone. So this is additional info especially for those looking for batik:
Location:
It is located mostly on the Lower Ground, Ground & 1st Floor (Lantai D1, D & 1). Am unable to recall the block it’s in but on the Ground Floor it is at the other end of the Ladies Market. Also if you enter at the Mandiri Lobby (where Bank Mandiri is), turn right and walk till almost the end. Can always ask for directions to “Pusat Batik” - ppl are generally helpful.
What is available:
1) Good variety of batik - jawa, pekalongan etc. If you would like to buy the same material in bulk, am told that you can find shops selling textiles in rolls/bale (kain ela) on the Lower Ground (D1).
2) Ready-to-wear batik fashion from blouses, jackets, shirts, children’s clothes, bags & crafts made out of batik.
3) Better batik options than Mayestik (another popular centre for textile in Jakarta)
Price:
1) Cheap - good value for money even if you are pretty mediocre at bargaining.
2) Generally cheaper than even Mayestik. Same material (batik dobi) can cost Rp 100,000 here for 2m (after discount) but will cost abt Rp 200,000 at Batik Budhe in Mayestik (it is more comfortable to shop at Budhe though).
3) Just make sure you check the pieces you’re taking home to ensure you’re ok with the quality and that there are no defects.
Hope you enjoy your trip to Thamrin City Mall - if I had another few hours to spare and more luggage space on flight bck, I would have happily stayed longer and bought more batiks!

We were a family with 2 young children. Although the mall was pretty packed with stalls next to one another, each stall had different ranges of goods. We spent a good 4 hours here and only managed to cover half of the mall. Do set aside at least half a day here for the full shopping experience!
Just to share for families with young children:
(1) There are no nappy changing areas and the toilets are not suitable for the children either. =(
(2) We used the GB Pockit Stroller and managed to pushed it along the aisles. Any strollers bigger than that will not be able to fit..

Written 8 December 2019
No free wifi . The prices are reasonable & cheap. If you buy more items from them, I'm sure you can get good discounts . Can practice your bargaining skills.

do the small stores have fitting rooms to try on? Can we buy 1 or 2 pieces of batik only or must be in bulk?
Written 3 September 2019
Most of them have the fitting room. Yes you can buy 1 or 2 pc Batik.
Written 3 September 2019
I don't think so, because the main business here is clothes, such as T-shirts, trousers.

Hi, Helen. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Which shop sells batik material (low to high end quality) with 6 meter long?
Written 20 February 2019
There are 100s of shops. Best to walk around and look.
Please note that if you ask at most shops about something that that specific shop does not sell, you are likely to get unhelpful and vague answers. Best to take an hour or two to check the shops yourself.

Hi. Can anybody share with me what's the price range at Thamrin City. Average price of an unsewn batik? I have no idea how much should I bring for my 4 days trip to Jakarta and I am fond of batik. I might just go crazy after seeing all the batiks!
Written 22 July 2015
Dear Amelia,
The price of unsewn batik will very much depends on the material, pattern, and how it is made. The material could be silk, cotton, polyester, etc. The stamped batik is much more cheaper than the hand draw batik. So the price range could be from 100.000 rupiah/meter to more than 1 million rupiah/meter. Have a nice shopping!
