- thepitsCotswolds, United Kingdom481 contributionsGood museum to see art and historical artefactsVery well displayed exhibits relating to Javanese art and history. Laid out over 6 floors so we made full use of lifts. Helpful staff who spoke good English. Be aware of the black marks on the floor around exhibits as alarms are set off if you cross. Explanation also in English. Only 100k Rp entry so very good value particularly if chucking it down outside.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 March 2024
- PoipuJim79 contributionsImmerse in Java CultureThis is a very lovely museum that showcases the history, culture and heritage of central Java and Yogyakarta. It has a lovely collection of ceramics of the Neolithic era and bronze sculptures from the 8th century. It also includes large collections of wayang shadow puppets, various ancient weapons such as keris, and Javanese masks. This is an exceptionally pleasing way to learn about Javanese culture.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 June 2024

We went to see the shadow puppet show, there was no information about the story. The room was too bright to enjoy the shadows. The seating was not tiered so had problem to see. The show was boring with no background information, the musicians looked bored. No energy, and we left half way through the show. Please visit this only if you are really really into shadow puppet, waste of time. Rather walk on the Malioboro street.

I give 5 stars for encouragement.
The museum is complete, interesting and presents the various facets of Javanese culture, the only flaw is the scarcity, if not lack, of descriptions in English. The few present are sparse and not very detailed, a shame!
There is perhaps an attempt to improve the offer with the accompaniment of a guide who tries to explain the main elements, but sometimes communication is difficult and difficult.
Every evening there are shows that present various aspects of Javanese culture, the most interesting of which is that of puppets (they can also be seen at Kraton every morning from 9am to 12pm). Worth seeing if you can.

This museum has been known to me since the time of SD where the location is only 10 minutes walk.
The last time I visited this museum when SD made a tour here, it was more than 40 years ago.
Last week I put it here after hearing a friend who just visited and was impressed with the museum.
Tickets worth Rp 10,000 I bought with Qris. The Museum serves guides to help explain.
There are some spaces here such as Prehistoric Rooms, Hindu-Buddhist Rooms, Islamic Rooms and so on.It means that it is not based on religion but influence in the time, how the life of the community, the objects of its deprivation and so on.It is not complete National Museum but is sufficient for the level of small towns.
For me that is interesting here is the information of the dolanan past which turns out that I still experience it in my childhood like jamuran, Anis, Moon and so on.I smiled in memory of old memory.Oh yeah there is also a seated arrow game called Jemparingan in the form of VR - Virtual Reality. It turns out to be hard too yeah.
If you're going to Joga, you can put it by here. If you want to dress up you can make a Reservation the day before through WA.

An excellent place to learn about Javanese culture and arts. The exhibits are well presented and the English explanation is an important part of the experience. They also have night shows of theatre and dance which are well worth attendance. You come out with a lot of appreciate for the Javanese intricate and complexed culture.

Go knowing what to expect- and leave early because it is boring.
Its great to see this for 30 minutes but as there is no English translation you can be looking at a screen with stationery puppets for a few minutes while the narration is given in Indonesian. This soon gets boring as you cannot follow the story.
However it is fun to see the show from both sides and worth the cheap 20,000 entrance fee.
This could be really successful if the musicians came out with a smile and there was an English translation.
On exit we were encouraged to see the processing room. Again this could be great if someone could be bothered to tell me about the process. Instead 3 men stared at me and I left feeling a bit uncomfortable!

We watched the Wayang Puppet show at the Sonobudoyo Museum, and I must say, it was wonderful. The puppets are exquisite and intricately made and one can sit and watch the performance from both behind the screen as well as in front of the screen. That was very interesting! The Ramayana was being performed, and the only drawback was that we were unable to follow what was happening, as the narration was in Bahasa. Unfortunately, we could only watch about 75 mins of the performance and had to leave before the end as we had to catch an early morning flight the following day.
