Southern Square or Alun Alun is a place for an evening hangout with family and friends. Located at the back yard of Sultan Palace, this place is cloaked in local myth and legend. The city square was built to make the back side of the palace to look a lot like the front yard.
An interesting myth is of walking pass the twin Banyan (called Beringin locally) trees planted on the city square, blindfolded. The game is known as Masangin, which stands for “masuk dua beringin” (entering two banyan trees).
The legend has it that if you are able to walk between them with your eyes closed then your wish will come true. Many people try and this may sound easy but it’s not! I was amazed to see how many people don’t manage to walk in a straight line, including me! I failed miserably.
Whether you believe the story or not, it is good fun trying to make it between the trees and this is one of the quirkiest spots in the city.
People usually rent a blindfold from a local seller which ensures that you can’t cheat, and you can try as many times as you like.
Another tourist attraction is to ride an Adong Adong, a fluorescent lit pedal bike in the shape of a VW beetle. Complete the ride by taking one round of the square and thank me later. Yes, loud music of popular songs comes free with it.
While you enjoy the square, don’t forget to have boiled corn and ice cream. No one leaves without having them.

Alun-Alun Selatan (Southern City Square) is one of famous squares in Yogyakarta and there's a myth about it: There are two big banyan trees in Souther City Square, whoever can walk through in between the trees blindfolded, then they will have a good life in future.
I didn't try to walk through because I don't believe the myth, but I did enjoy watching people who tried their luck to walk through the trees blindfolded :D.
I visited Southern City Square on Sunday morning, there were many local people gather here to play or do some activities such as sport (jogging, biking, etc). Watching local people activities here more interested me in my opinion than that two banyan trees.

Alun-alun Jogjakarta is very famous among local for the believes about two big trees that stand tall in the middle of the field. Locals believe that if someone could pass the middle of the tree then they can make their dreams come true.
For some people it might sounds easy, but trust me IT WAS NOT! I have tried it several times and somehow never made it. Our tour guide said that only people with pure heart, mind and soul can usually pass the tree. When you did, do not forget to make a wish, because they believe that any kind of wish can be granted once you pass the 2 big tree. Interesting?

Alun-alun is one of two parks within the Kraton complex. This is the south park which you come across soon after entering the southern gate. In the evening this place comes alive with the youth of Yogya. There are art installations, food stalls and various sporting activities. In the middle are two banyan trees, it is customary to try to walk between them while blindfolded for good luck. White the Kraton buildings come across as dull, this park is a hive of activity after dark.

We heard good reviews of this place so on our last night, we took a trishaw to visit the place. Maybe it was the heavy rain, the place was dead except for a few colourful vehicles. It was a disappointment. We looked around for 5 minutes and left.

Yogyakarta may be a large city but Alun-Alun Selatan (aka "Southern City Square" in English) reminds you that Jogja is essentially just a village that got too big. Most towns and villages in Indonesia have a "square" in the center. It's usually just a field with street food peddlers and some village entertainment.
So, if you're coming to this spot with expectations of a large, elaborate, modern, attraction with loads of options, your hopes will be shattered.
One of my favorite snacks available here is called "ronde" - a bowl filled with warm ginger tea and gelatinous balls of peanut butter.

Really cool place to hang out. All the locals go here in the evenings to hang out with there family.
There is food, music, kites and manny more. They even have bicycle cars with LED lights all over the place. Which you can rent and cycle around the square.
It's just a perfect place to get some cheap local food, and be entertained by the locals. You'll probably end up in several photo shoots as well.
Great experience.

One of icon from Yogyakarta are the banyan trees. You should try to pass to middle of the banyan trees to proof that you have positive mind and character. The location is about 10 minutes from Malioboro Street. The area is quite from cars and traffic. So many games for kids and adults for play and they are safe. So excited.

If you are traveling to Jogja and wondering where to go at night, this park may be good option. We tried the paddling car with the LED light and loud music, very interesting. Also, try to pass the twin trees and blindfold - it is said that your wish will come true if you successfully go pass through it.
