Plaza Cuartel is regarded as a memorial park and shrine to the 153 Americans who were massacred there in 1944 in what became known as the Palawan Massacre. It was originally a Spanish garrison then a penal colony under Japanese invasion. Our visit was decidedly above ground, viewing the remnants of the old walls and the memorial with the various information panels throughout the site. The area is largely unkempt, more a park than memorial, but at least, the significance is remembered. Reading beforehand that there are dungeons; must be off limits as we didn't get to see any.

Plaza Cuartel sits just near the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral. This historical landmark pays tribute to American and Filipino soldiers who were victims of the second world war at the hands of Japanese soldiers. During the war, there were over a hundred American soldiers who were imprisoned in the tunnels of this landmark and were burned alive! However, 11 soldiers escaped the massacre and swim their way out to the sea. Some people say that they encountered paranormal experiences in this landmark due to its dark past. In the present, it’s a simple shrine with tall trees, educational boards, and ruins of old garrisons and historical tunnels.

Very much a garden with monument to remember the heroes in the WW past. Few posting on the history and the people that have sacrificed their lives to to help and win the war. The local would definitely appreciate the pain of the past that made the present.

If you're not a history buff you can do away with the City tour. The plaza cuartel is included in the tour of 6 spots. there's not much to see.

This is the WW2 POW camp where 139 soldiers, mostly Americans, were killed in a massacre, December 1945. Eleven prisoners lived to tell their story, graphically described by U.S. Marine Glenn McDole, who is featured on one of the murals. Today it's a peaceful, shaded park with a view of the nearby bay. Its grounds are faithfully maintained by local residents. A moving experience.

Plaza Cuartel is located just across the Immaculate Concepcion church of Puerto Princesa. It is an old fort where 150 American prisoners were burned to death by the Japanese during World War 2. The site is now a memorial park for these fallen soldiers to serve as a reminder of the atrocities committed during the war, as well as the sacrifice and heroism of many during that time. The park overlooks the sea in the distance, and is very shady and cool, owing to the numerous trees there, making it an ideal place to visit even during the heat of the day. The place is clean and maintained and entrance is free.

This is also part of our city tour. Great place and history but a very sad story. About a hundred plus soldiers were burned in this place and only 11 survived during the WW2.

The cuartel is a park located right across the cathedral and it features a sculpture symbolic of the war history in that area.

Visiting this place was heart wrenching. So many lives vanished here as the Japanese murdered them on site. This is not a huge memorial ground but worth a visit. Beautiful surroundings. People are friendly and greeted us as we walked up from the cruise port. A must see place when in Puerto Princesa.

This is a very historic spot in the city of Puerto Princesa. Originally it was built as a garrison by the Spanish. The Japanese imprisoned American soldiers here during WWII. When the Japanese realised they would lose the war, they murdered many American soldiers. Only a handful escaped. The area is now a park. The cathedral is across the road.
