About
The National Design Centre (NDC) is the nexus for all things design. This is where designers and businesses congregate to exchange ideas, conduct business, use its facilities and obtain assistance from the national agency for design, the DesignSingapore Council. Centrally located in the arts, cultural, learning and entertainment district in the Bras Basah-Bugis area, it is well placed to invite the public to learn about design through its exhibitions and programmes.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I actually was only taking shelter from the rain in Septermber 2016 when I found out about this exhibition. With no initial knowledge whatsoever I entered the hall and I felt all eyes were on me since I was soaking wet with from the rain. The exhibition was visually stunning, I went once more to this place last May and it was still there with new installations. Cool.

Not much to see here, probably it is still new and not enough products to sale, I'm quite disappointed.
Keep walking, not yet a place worth stopping by.

Opened in March 2014, NDC was intended to be a design R&D hub by the Singapore Design Council. The building itself was renovated out of an old school and a Town Convent built in 1945. Not exceptionally classic or unique. In the center of the building is an open air atrium with glass sky-roof. A café and a shop selling locally-designed products are located on the ground floor. Some 8-10 design companies or incubators are co-situated in the building. Is this an interesting and inspiring design centre? Without any events and exhibitions on its own, NDC is boring. Also don't expect it to be on par with other world-class centres like Parsons, Art Center, IED or Creapole. NDC is still in its embryonic stage. Tip: Check on NDC website for events before you come by. Include NDC as part of art district tour and not on its own. Next to Bugis Junction subway. There are some travellers who like visiting product or industrial design centres. Unfortunately apart from a leaflet, there are no tickets or stamp to collect.

We had some expectation because its Singapore Design Week.
However, this centre is really nth special.
The layouts and products are not attractive too.
We wait so long for the coffee at Kapok........
and it tastes below average.

This is just a fairly ordinary building with nothing particularly special for the public to see. THe ground floor is essentially just a large open space and the upper floors don't seem to be open to the public.

After reading write-up and publicity on 50 Years of Singapore Design, was expecting more from this particular exhibition but was somewhat disappointed by the crammed layput which didn't give prominence to outstanding features in the design of iconic brand names eg Singapore Girl costume/Haw Par Brothers Tiger Balm. They were part of linear displays on the wall together with other less outstanding items. Granted they were created by advertising agencies and not too many trade secrets should be given away but how did they come by that striking paper covering of that Tiger Balm container, the particular colors used for eg seeing that it's so distinctive that it's not been changed for years?
One piece though was memorable and well-presented, the plastic Kopitiam chair where it's explained that every part is purposefully designed, the hole in the centre for easy lifting up and chaining chairs together at closing time, congratulations on curating that piece, exactly what a viewer wants to see and understand about a particular design!
Perhaps an attendant could be stationed in the hall as one large group of inconsiderate viewers were talking and laughing loudly, treating the venue as their place of socialisation while other visitors were trying to concentrate on the exhibits.
Not a security guard in sight except behind the desk at the main entrance!

Singapore is an "intentional community" ⸺ a place designed with a purpose ⸺ growing with confidence in its ability to create social and economic value. Fitting, then, that it should dedicate a National Centre to Design in a decade when the discipline has become recognised as including, but also being much more than, the craft of artisans. Across schools, workplaces and government, Singapore has taken "Design Thinking" to heart, teaching it as a key to transforming national and corporate strategy into innovation and positive change.
In the first decades of nation building, when rapid economic growth was seen as the priority, art, design and creativity was not emphasised as a national priority. Today, however, Singapore's National Design Centre sits at the heart of a new creative quarter whose students and practitioners will intentionally shape the products, services, experiences and businesses of tomorrow. Seen that way, the National Design Centre is becoming more than an excellent exhibition venue and a great place for coffee or a creative meeting with friends and colleagues. It's also a gathering place for those who want to apply creativity to create different dimensions of value for this island nation's future. Well worth a visit.

I visited the Centre to attend a conference welcome reception. The canapés were very nice and served by attentive and professional staff. However, the acoustics do not lend themselves to large crowds in that it was difficult to hear conversations. I really liked the installations featuring aspects of outstanding design. There was no entrance fees. Nice!

I have been here on a number of occasions over the past few years.
Whilst I enjoy the exhibits- I'm a little disappointed with the lack of new items. The café and retail section is cool.
