I like to hunt for places of lush greenery while navigating on this island of concrete jungle. The bustling Balestier and Novena areas boast of awesome eateries, impressive shopping malls, and renowned medical hub facilities but you hardly could find a sizeable park or places of lush greenery. I don't think the mini-size Zhongshan Park qualifies as a place of lush greenery. I then decided to cross the link bridge from Balestier to Tao Payoh to explore this Town Park.

This Town Park is situated beside the busy PIE and seems to act as a buffer to the toxic air pollutants emitted from the exhausts of the heavy traffic plying along the Expressway. The park is not a very significant one and it resembles the Tiong Bahru or Choa Chu Kang Park.

HDB Hub is located directly opposite the park overlooking and seems to be telling the proud story that catapult the park to fame. Toa Payoh is the first town built by HDB and the first town to have communal facilities which included the Town Garden. It has the reputation of being the first HDB communal garden. HDB is proud of this park because in the subsequent towns built by HDB the park designs were replicated and incorporated into the construction of the communal facilities.

There is a viewing tower right in the middle of the town park. I thought it resembles that of the inclined Tower of Pisa but I look left and right, it is not falling. I am amazed at the landscaped pond which is well sculptured and give a cooling effect. But the water is greenish probably due to the algae formation under the scorching sun. I try to find fish in the pond but could not find one. I tried to find families or children in the park since it is school holidays now but only found elderly aged resting at benches at one corner. Wonder if this park continues to attract families as like in the 70s. During those days, married couples felt honored to take wedding photos at this park. There is a Chinese restaurant near to the link bridge but there was no one patronizing the restaurant and I wondered how it survived daily.

Can a park built in the 60s and 70s still stay relevant till these days?

Average? This is much bigger than average and also has a better than average water feature.

Very good? Well the best part is the Chinese garden style landscaping, especially the cute arch bridges. But they are simply copies of the real thing. Photogenic maybe, but fake nonetheless.

And while it looks serene, the roads on both side are loud. It is not nearly as peaceful as you might hope.

And if you have ever been to Centennial Park Sydney, or more locally Lumpini Park Bangkok, well, scratch another star off. The tyranny of living in a country 50 kms across.

Toa Payoh is a nice location to stay at with lots of amenities around. Sadly moving out soon from Blk 122 Lorong 2 because there is this particular local guy staying same 4th floor as me and same block.

Tall, skinny, tattoos on both arms and have lots of earrings on both of his ears. His looks is very scary, gangster kind of look. The girlfriend is also the same, look at neighbours like not happy, want to fight.

Both of them always look at me and my husband like not happy, whenever we taking the lift. We don't even owe them anything. This happen everytime. We treat them so nice, but get unhappiness in return.

Omg, damn stress like that.
Moving out from this block is the only option.

I'm going to miss this place so much.

Location happen at Quan Jin Foot Reflexology, Blk 123 Toa Payoh Lor 1 #01-491.

Those who are going there for massages, please be careful

If you want a fantastic experience, travel to Singapore. From the rides and fun of Sentosa to the food courts - Singapore has it all. People say Singapore is expensive, yes it can be but the trick is - Think Like a Local. Where we stay in Toa Payoh, at the local food court I can get a plate of egg noodles / 2 fried eggs and a cup of coffee for only S$4. On Orchard Road it would 3 or 4 times as much. Re the Food Courts - there is everything and anything. Tourist spots. You need at least 10 days. Go for it

An area of tranquillity right on the doorstep of the first town designed entirely by the HDB and, the first MRT station. Fairly large for a park of this nature. Fantastic photo opportunity for most purposes. Loads of spaces and greenery. A great place to perform reflections, meditation and, seek inner peace.

Deceptively idle. Suspiciously boring.

There is a kind of 'like' at first glance. It is not 'Love' at first sight but it grows as you drift through the surrounds.

The snaking boardwalks, the reflexology footpaths, the cluster of artificial islands linked by half-moon arched bridges, the gazebo, the moody pond, the large sheltered pavilions, the observation tower (closed when I was there), makes it a park you would care to claim.

Willowing trees and bamboo species and floating vegetation abound. Tortoises, butterflies and wild birds can be sighted.

The well planned landscaping makes for delightful views at every turn of the walk - see photos attached.

It is a intimate feel of being alone..
even if you are there with someone.

My visit saw lots of picnic groups, courting pairs, families out in force, dance troupes brushing up on their moves, strollers perpetually in motion. Yet, they enjoy their own space and I am, idyllically, alone. Cool.

At select zones, you can sense the hush and embrace a shady cool.

The Park is a welcomed green lung in the heart of a concrete jungle. Fresh outdoors re-defined.

Easily accessible... within walking distance from Toa Payoh Bus Interchange & Toa Payoh MRT Station. A public park that is nicely spaced out, not sprawling but well spread... giving you the intimate feel of a private garden.

Oh, just one thing. Its best to remind your partner "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" if you reckon a lie-in is on the agenda.

Oh, the fountain was not functioning when I visited. Maybe it needs repairing. Anyway, the 'hush' it brings was preciously appreciated. Absolutely.
