    Nice urban square
We visited Plaza Sotomayor while on a tour of Valpo. It's centrally located downtown and had several nice historic buidlings as well as some restaurants and souvenir shopping. It was a pleasant place to walk around and is a good starting point for touring the downtown area.

    Site of Monument to Heroes
Our walking tour of Valparaiso began at the town square by the war memorial. Valpariso was once a vibrant city but today is one of the poorest cities in Chile. This decline started with the construction of the Panama Canal. Abandoned mansions and brightly colored houses can be found over Valparaiso’s 45 hills. Near the town plaza is what was once Latin America’s first stock exchange and is a reminder of the earlier times of wealth. Monument a Los Heroes honors the Chilean sailors who were killed during the Battle of Iquique and the Battle of Punta is on Plaza Sotomayor across from the Navy Headquarters’ building. On top is a statue of Arturo Prat who died while commanding the Frigate Esmeralda. Underneath the monument is a vault holding the remains of some of the sailors who perished. An iron fence circles the monument, and a guard stands watch to prevent defacing the memorial with graffiti or vandalism. This is a must see for those interested in Chile’s naval history.

Plaza With a Lot to Offer
Very nearby the busy port, this plaza has a lot to offer. The large blue building in the back is the Edificio Armada de Chile. Underneath the middle of the square resides the Monument a los Heroes de Iquique. So...the port, the square, the monument, and on the day we were there, there was a large market covering the plaza.

Celebrated space for the community to host special events with pride.
The central heartbeat of Valparaiso surrounded by beautiful buildings housing the Ministry of Arts and Culture, Naval headquarters, iconic 100 Year old hotel and the Monument to the Heros of Iquique with its underground vault of heroes and the statue of Arturo Prat . Close to the Puerto Metro, stores, cafes’ and tourist shops. Rather small, but a celebrated space for the community to host special events with pride.

Although next to the dock, it was two buses and a mile walk to get here! Once we had arrived the navigation around the square and views of the naval building were hampered by scaffolding that had been erected, I presume, for New Year celebrations. That said it is a good square, naval HQ staues and other interesting buildings to look at. The market didn't really help much in either stuff yo buy or enhancing looks

Plaza Sotomayor is the main square in Valparaíso with several historic buildings and monuments. Standing in the middle of the square gives a wonderful perception of the history. One will find several street vendors selling souvenir items. Certainly worth visiting when in Valparaíso.

We were on a city tour of Valparaiso and this was one of the stops....we actually spent about 45 minutes here learning the history of the plaza. The focus of the square is the monument that honors the Chilean sailors who fell during the Battle of Iquique and the Battle of Punta Gruesa. The plaza and surrounding buildings were designated a historic district on January 23, 1979. Of special note was learning the history of Captain Arturo Prat. The Intendencia de Valparaiso is currently the headquarters of the Chilean Navy. All in all is was worth a stop and very interesting.

Walk around the square slowly for a while and take in everything, then walk over to the seaport just a short block away and see the shops and small boats. Take a 1/2 hour ride in the Paciific if you like then have a drink upstairs at the Seaport bar. What a way to spend a 1/2 day or more. Best of all, you will have gotten a true feel for Valparaiso's beauty and the friendliness of its people.

You will probably run across this large plaza as you traverse Valparaiso. Many of the free walking tours start here. I especially liked the ones run by Ecomapu Travel which start at noon and 4pm Tuesday thru Sunday. Groups are smaller than with the other companies.

As a local, I can vehemently declare that there is no reason to visit this plaza unless you're looking for European-like tourism in Valpo. It would be a shame to waste your time snapping a few worthless photos at this plaza when Valpo has so much more to offer

Valparaiso is just a sad town, all in the past, with shabby remnants of one beautiful buildings. Here at least there is a beautiful monument and a lot of small shops round the corner
