The tunnel was great, & good views from the top over the coloured houses on the nearby hills. View also showed that it was a poorer neighbourhood than the hills at the opposite end of the bay (Cerro Alegre etc). We wandered off to photograph...More

When visiting Valparaiso, you must not miss this historic elevator. It is quite amazing to understand why and how it was built.

If you arrive by bus, you could head south to this ascensor before heading west to the main part of town. It is clearly a poorer area but should be fine during the day - we even saw a couple of small guided tours. Pay...More

We took most ascensores in Valparaíso (some were shut for repairs). They are all worth it, both for the experience and for the view. My husband said "it is just a lift", but the rest of the family thought it was well worth it. We...More

This Ascensor is different to others in Valparaiso in that is actually a lift rather than a funicular. It is accessed via a tunnel that goes off the end of Almirante Simpson ( just to the NE of the trolley bus terminal) The views from...More

The lift has now re-opened. It is interesting as it is the only vertical lift and it goes through a tunnel. The views above aren´t particularly inspiring and the doors on the ground floor are those of a standard lift. The best part is the...More

I have visited Valparaiso many times but I had never made my way over to Cerro Polanco. It has the must unique acensor in Valpo in that, from below, you go through a long subterranean tunnel and then take an elevator to the top of...More

Ascensor Polanco was refurbished and reopened a little while back and it is kind of interesting, especially the tunnel that leads to the ascensor. But once you get to the top there is not a whole lot to do. Be careful in this neighborhood, especially...More

Great 360 view of the city for CLP 200 (100 to go up, 100 to go down). To get into the elevator, you go through an interesting dark, cold and humid, mine-like tunnel for ~100 meters. The neighborhood around is not very nice, don't go...More

Didn't realize it was an elevator until after I got out of the elevator, but the walk through the tunnel was pretty neat. It felt like we were in a cave with a nice walkway.
