As of November 6, 2016 our best estimate is that Spectacled bear season will begin at the end of the month. We will update this post as soon as the bears show up. Spectacled bear season can last between 2 weeks and 2 1/2 months. Besides being the official home of the endangered Spectacled bear and thousand other wildlife species, Maquipucuna is a birdwatchers paradise. The Reserve has an internationally awarded Maquipucuna Ecolodge. The nearly 15,000 acres Maquipucuna Reserve, located only 2 hours away from Quito, is also home to at least 376 species of birds, 45 species of mammals, 250 species of butterflies and over 2000 species of plants. That is, Maquipucuna harbors about 10% of Ecuador's plant diversity and 4% of all the bird species known for the entire planet! Maquipucuna has the category of Protected Forest and has been declared as Important Bird Area (IBA).

This may be one of the oldest cloud-forest reserves in the area but it's not only the infrastructure that shows definite signs of age, also their administration processes seem to start falling apart. There are many shortcomings in maintenance to the buildings and infrastructure. The whole place feels very tired. What they tout "research station" in their marketing information is... More

We are committed to share Maquipucuna and that our visitors have the best experience in our piece of paradise, so we are deeply troubled by the experiences you describe. Our stay was awesome, peaceful, AND educational. Arsenio was our host and guide for our stay. He took us on great hikes thru their property where we saw lots of birds and unique flora. Arsenio is very knowledgeable, but more than that, he's genuinely excited to share what he knows, and his enthusiasm is wonderful to observe. We were sad... More

Beautiful stay , service was amazing , food was excellent, absolutely everything was perfect! Getting there was a bit tricky as you are on very thin roads that overlook a beautiful valley. The whole experience was worth it. I would go back again and again.

The hikes around are breathtaking as a suggestion consider hiring horses to cover more ground. The fauna and bird life particularly the humming birds are really special and everywhere.

We stayed 2 nights/3 days at the Ecolodge and enjoyed the experience. Arsenio was our guide and and a phenomenal birder. Hikes in the cloud forest were easy along former roads to moderate on the Pre-Inca trails. Arsenio kept the hikes interesting as he whistled bird songs and they sang back. He explained the uses of plants along the trails.... More

I have spent my entire career in environmental conservation. First as a ranger in California, as director of California State Parks and as deputy director of the National Park Service. Maquiepucuna is the epitomy of what an ecolodge should be. It sits lightly on the land, employs local indigenous people and the food is all natural and some of the... More

If you are planning a trip to Ecuador then Maquipucuna ecolodge should be on your list of places to stay! I stayed here for 10 days on a tropical semester in 2014. I loved it so much that I had to return this time bringing my husband. The staff is so friendly and the food is amazing! This is not... More

My stay was such fun, a perfect trip for the outdoors-lovers! The food was delicious and they catered to my gluten intolerance with the greatest of ease. I was hesitant about some noodles in my soup only to realize they were rice noodles, specially prepared for me! I haven't had service that catered to my allergies like that yet, after... More
