Attention has been given to show the history of Quito (region) as understandable as possible. Exhibits are in chronological order, language used to explain what you see is simple, many of the images, fauna exhibits, replicas of huts to show how people lived, speak for themselves. Emphasis is on how ordinary people lived: grew their food, built their houses, developed utensils and eventually how Quito emerged using modern technology.
Unlike the national museum where the conflict between indigenous and Spanish conquistadores is almost reduced to a footnote in history, the city museum at some instance even graphically shows conquistadores killing people. It also shows how after subjugation indigenous people found a place in the new society (at the lowest step of the ladder). The city museum presents history in a more objective way, though I think the conflict and subsequent repression could have been given more attention.
The 450 year-old hospital building is explained as well. Almost like a museum in a museum. Well done.
On the second floor not all information is made available in English and Kichwa yet.
Overall highly recommended to visit.

This museum was beautifully organized, presented and curated. It traced Ecuador from pre-history to the present day - and everything was illustrated in context. The information was available not only in Spanish but English and Qechua. Nice. Now for the really extra cool things: the floors - while the parquet floors were polished to a slippery shine, in one of the galleries, there was an image of ?Quito on the floor, made of different woods. Sensational!!! The whole place is impressive.

The Museo de la Ciudad provides a well-maintained and informative timeline of the evolution of Quito and the surrounding area. The courtyards are particularly lovely as a place to rest from walking the city. I would have rated it a 5 if there had been access to detailed explanations in English.

This is a lovely building made into a great musuem - don't miss some of the beautiful inlaid flors.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit exploring the building and its displays.
I hope that the musuem can partner with a local english language college to get English explanations for the exhibits. There is just too much information for basic Spanish and a Translate app to do it justice. Quito has so much fascinating history, please share it with us non-Spanish speakers!

We happened on this museum, built in an old hospital while wandering in the centro historico. It was well done, well-sized, interactive, and really helped us have a good sense for Quito and Ecuador. Bonus exhibits about the hospital and plant medicine were terrific.

If you enjoy going back in time, this is a great spot to recall the independence setting in Colonial Quito. You will be taken along different scenes of the Colonial times through objects and rooms that recall the Historical period.

Good museum, and sort of well organized. Part of the museum has translated cards for English and Kichwa speakers, but only about 1/3 or 1/2 of it (there was a big gap of time in the middle).

Considering it's telling the history of Quito, this museum is in a very modern setting, with 21st century exhibits. It's only $3 to visit and because everything is labelled in Spanish only, make sure you take the tour with the English speaking guide, which is included in the ticket. There's a lot to see and explore and part of the building is recently added on, housing modern art exhibits. A really fascinating spot.

This museum will give you lots of interesting background in Quito over the centuries--from indigenous times through colonialism and into the present. You will gain a great social historical perspective of the city through really engaging exhibits.

A reuse of a former hospital building.
The permanent display follows the history of Quito from 10000bc to now.
Hopefully they keep the hospital display section too as it was interesting.
There are periodical displays too.
About 2 hours should be comfortable no rush visit.
Most displays in Spanish but English guides can be purchased, but keep eye out some displays have yellow tabbed cards that can pull out to reveal English translation.
We got enough out of it without buying English guide.
