- Owen JOxford, United Kingdom48 contributionsScary for me, but well worth it.I found the Telerifiqo mildly terrifying as I'm not great with heights. This wasn't helped by the fact that they pause operations if there is any sign of an electrical storm in the area and you can be left dangling at any point in the journey to wait it out. I'm sure not an issue if you are not as faint hearted as me though! The climb to almost 4000metres is extraordinary and the views from the top on a clear day must be incredible. Sadly, on a murky day, less so, but still extremely impressive. It would be a shame to come to Quito and not do this!Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 13 October 2023
- Sharon MAlexandria, Virginia14 contributionsBeautiful day tripThe teleferico is efficient, modern, well run, and reasonably priced at $8.50 for a round trip ride. I like that the cable runs pretty slowly so you get 18 full minutes of views on the way up. As with most cable cars, the windows are kind of cloudy, but you can still get some great views of the city and of the volcanoes (including Cotopaxi) on a clear day. (It's recommended to go as early in the morning as possible to maximize your chance of clear views). Once on top, you can walk close by to various lookout points for additional great views. Or for the more energetic, you can use this as the starting point to hike to Rucu Pichincha crater (5 hours round trip if you do the whole hike). Note that I was in Quito a few years ago and heard all kinds of scary reports about muggings, robberies, rapes, etc. on this trail. We'll, the security appears to have really tightened up and no one was reporting sch incidents in April 2018, and we saw lots of other people hiking on the trail without incident, even in mid week. For those who don't want to walk, there are people renting horses to get you to the base of the crater at $10/hour. All in all it's a great way to spend at least a few hours or more while in Quito. Highly recommended.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 October 2023
- peppopatMiami, Florida402 contributionsBreathtaking view, weather permitting!!!A must see and reasonably priced. Check the weather before going, because clouds frequently move in and obscure the view of the city. The only time you will feel the thin air is when you climb steps. You will be huffing and puffing. There is a price for seniors of only $6.50 normal price for adults 8 dollars.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 7 November 2023
- ChemtrailerCanada404 contributionsGreat viewsSpectacular views from the top. Go early in the morning before the clouds roll in. Carry some extra clothes in a small backpack .... it may be warm for you in Quito, but ascend another 3,000' and the temperature will drop to approx 6C and it'll be chilly .... wear good walking shoes for the trails at the top for even better viewsVisited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 December 2023
- LaurieH22Albuquerque, New Mexico76 contributionsMust see - great for artistsThis was one of the highlights of our Quito visit. We went on a cloudy day, and it was still spectacular. At the top, the walking trail is beautiful, and we would highly recommend visiting there, especially if you are an artist. The elevation is high; so, take frequent air breaks for the hike.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 March 2024
- 4grlsmomPewaukee, Wisconsin318 contributionsA Quito highlight! The most amazing views of Quito can be seen from Pinchincha at the top of this tram ride! Some important things to note - it is best to visit in the morning, as the clouds and rain tend to roll in as the day goes on. You don't need to book a tour to visit, you can arrange your own ride via cab or uber and then buy a ticket upon arrival. An adult non-resident ticket is $9. The weather is constantly changing - it clouded up while we rode the tram, but then cleared again a few minutes later. The base of the gondola is at 10,000', and the top is about 13,000', so the air is pretty thin. The hike to the swings is probably another 1/4 to 1/2 mile up the trail, mostly uphill and steep in spots. The llama photos were along this trail. Some people were clearly struggling, even the young and fit, the swings are at 13,120' (My Elevation App). Very worth the effort to see though! There were hardcore runners at the top, amazingly running really fast at that altitude! Be sure to hang on to your ticket, you will need it to get the tram back down.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 March 2024
- Joe M26 contributionsUp, up and away! There were several reasons for me to be anxious about this tour. It is in the city of Quito. Which was already at 9k feet above sea level. I was not sure if the altitude of rising up to 14k would be too much for me. But, I took the tour anyways to see this amazing city from the vantage of the gods. It does not disappoint! The cable car that takes you up is about a ten minute ride to the top and along the way you can see the change in the ecosystem, as one part you see eucalyptus growing, then cows grazing and the, dry grass plants that are used for weaving baskets! You get to the top and there are three areas to view the mountain volcanos and town below. There is the “front” to see the mix of Old Town and the industrial area, the “back” wheee you ca see more of the agricultural sector, and a little hike to show the mountain volcano. It is a breathtaking site to see from this vantages point, and you realize how small you are in the world! My guide Galindo led the way with amazing facts and laughter along the way, a true professional with a friends touch!Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 30 May 2024
- Joy MFort Worth, Texas64 contributionsEasy, fun, and beautiful views! My husband and I had a day to kill in Quito before our tour began, so we took a $5 taxi ride from our hotel in central Quito to this cable car park. It was $18 for the both of us, and we got there around 11:30am. It was pretty empty, and we got onto the cable car within two minutes of getting there. It’s chilly up there, so I’d recommend at least a sweater! The views are incredible on the ride up as well as at the top. The swings were not crowded at all, but I could see how it could get backed up easily. The trails are well taken care of, the grounds are as well, and it was a beautiful and easy thing to do for the afternoon. We left around 3. The cafe had a good variety of light lunch options, as well as many drink options. Overall, this is definitely something to do when you’re in Quito!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 June 2024
- Michael HFredericton, Canada43 contributionsAn essential view of QuitoThis is a great 1/2 day activity for individuals or families. It is about a $12-16 Uber ride from the old town. The cars are modern 6 seat Poma lift gondis. The view from the lift and the top are fantastic. Lots of "fairly" well marked trails at the top. I wish I'd had my mountain bike with me. There are some fairly gnarly trails right off the lift. Try the Sky Swing; it's a great photo op.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 August 2024
- mariellette202247 contributionsA good introduction to altitudeA good hike up to Rucu Pichincha although we felt the views are not as nice as when you are 100% in nature. It’s great to have a view in the extended city of Quito but I prefer rural places. The walk is easy all the way to be base of the Rucu Pichincha at about 4500m but from there we noted a big change. The path gets steeper, is more slippery (you walk in sand), it is colder and windy. This is also where our 7 year-old started to struggle, but mainly because of the lack of oxygen. He managed to walk up a bit more but stopped just before reaching the rocks, at about 4600m. A good hike overall with nice views.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 September 2024

8AM weekend or 9AM on weekdays they start operating the cable cabin lift. That is rather late if you want to enjoy good views of the mountain ranges around Quito. By 8AM often Cotopaxi and other volcanos are not longer visible, because of the clouds.
If you plan to climb 4680m high Pichincha 8AM is really too late and potentially puts climbers in danger. It shows the teleferico is a (monopoly) business geared to tourists who want an easy day out to a viewpoint and who have to pay 8,50$ for a return ticket (one way tickets are not possible). Expensive by local standards. Consider also that to get to the teleferico by public bus is hardly possible and you will have to take a taxi (4$ from the old town).

We arrived to the TeleferiQo about 10 am on a Tuesday. There were very few people taking the gondolas up to the mountain top. We were asked to wash our hands with soap and water before entering the building. Then we got our temperature checked and we went in to purchase the tickets. The tickets cost $8.50 per person. The funicular is set up just like a ski lift, with a number of gondolas continuously circling, so you don’t have to wait too long for the next one. It takes about 20 minutes to get to the top. Once we left the little cabin, one of the staff quickly sprayed it with disinfectant. It was definitely much cooler and windier at 4,000 meter height. Don’t forget to bring a windbreaker :) Also, keep in mind that weather in Quito area changes very quickly and unpredictably. If the morning has clear sky, it is a good sign that you should take the TeleferiQo up, otherwise, if it is too cloudy, you will not be able to enjoy the magnificent views of the city below you. As you exit the gondola, to your right you will see a little store with all sorts of merchandise, in the back of the store they have a “bridge” that stretches out into space. You could take some fun pictures there, and it costs only $1 per person to go out on that terrace. Afterwards, you can take a rather steep “stairway” higher up, where they have a swing set, also fun pictures to take, and a number of gazebos and benches to enjoy the view. If you are feeling truly adventurous, which we did not, you can take a hike up the mountain peak located beyond. A few people could be seen walking up that mountain. Apparently, it would take about 3 hours each way to climb up that summit. We spent about 2 hours at the top. Keep in mind that the air is much thinner at that altitude, so to those who are not accustomed to such conditions, walking up takes more effort. Also, one in every few gondolas has a bike rack attached to it, it seems that many people like to bring their bicycles up to the mountains to ride them at the top, or to take them down the slopes; there's a nice path one can use to ride or to walk to the bottom. Not sure how steep it is or how long it would take. We really loved the TeleferiQo, a great experience.

We took an Uber to teleferiQo at the beginning of our vaca but unfortunately was told that it would be closed until mid January. Disappointed because we wanted to do the chairlift and see the swing. We did some research and saw that there are a few trails up to Cruz Loma and the swing. The trails I looked at are on AllTrails.com. On day 6 of our vaca, we Ubered back to teleferiQo to hike.
My boyfriend and I aren’t pro hikers or anything. In fact, we just started hiking a month ago. This hike is moderate difficulty and there are a few things to keep in mind. While Quito weather is unpredictable, I strongly suggest going on a day where there is sun and little/no clouds. We definitely got lucky because the day we went was the only day it hadn’t rained on our vaca. Bring layers because you will start sweating during the hike but the top is quite chilly. The path starts off grassy and there are a lot of switchbacks which helps offset the elevation. After about 45 min, the path becomes dirt and the incline increases. There are parts that are muddy and there was a lot of cow poop everywhere and we even ran into some cows. Also, parts of the path are overgrown. The good thing about this path is that it is pretty visible and at a lot of points you can have amazing views of the city. At some points the path was very slippery so I would wear appropriate shoes. We ran into a few locals during the hike. The hike took us 2 hrs to get to the top and then another 15 min to walk (up an incline) to the swing. The views were amazing, 100% worth it.
I wouldn’t recommend this hike to do alone or to anyone with cardiopulmonary or joint issues and I would absolutely be acclimated to the altitude because you will feel it. Good luck!

Beautiful area for a day trip. You can just enjoy the view, walk around a bit and have a bite at the restaurant. For a serious hike you need to be prepared and start early. The weather can change quickly. On weekends and holidays expect long lines to buy a ticket

The "teleferico" was fun in itself despite the fact that it was so cloudy that we could not see much at the top.
At the top: Restaurant, banos, souvenir shop (we bought some great alpaca sweaters there) and a lot of surprises: Take the trail behind the little restaurant (not well marked at all) and keep walking: First you will meet some llamas (yes!) and, for 50 cents can take pics with them. Then keep walking; 5 minutes later you will reach some swings and who would not want to swing at the edge of the mountain ? More photo opportunities... Keep walking.... You will arrive at a small hut (where you can find delicious hot drinks and a fantastic plate lunch) and a paddock full of local horses and mules ready to take you on a trail ride for 30 -60 minutes ($5 to $10). It was fantastic! As it was cold, the guide gave us ponchos. We saw rabbits on the trail and it was a great trail even for us being from TX and being used to horses. The guide was very nice and knowledgeable. After the trail we went to eat at the little hut with several of the guides. The food was excellent and the hot chocolate delicious! Souvenir shopping before taking the telefereico back down. We had a fun time despite the weather. Don't hesitate, you will not regret it!

What a great and awesome view . Just 18 minutes ride (2500 KM) and you are slowly taken to 4050m to have spectacular view of the city. From the top station you can hike to the summit of Rucu Pichincha (4680m). Do not be put off if the view point is in clouds. The weather change there rapidly so warm clothes are advised to bring. There are many different view points, on clear days you can see volcanoes around or you can try swings. The bistro offers good snack and yummy cakes.
To get there take a taxi, from the centro historico 5-6 USD, UBER a bit cheaper. Normally open 9AM-8PM, now closed due to the Corona virus. Return ticket 8.50 USD (for foreigners) 4,99 USD for Ecuadorian ID

A not to be missed experience. It's pretty crowded on weekends in the morning half. It's definitely better to go as early as possible so you get clear views from above and it's not cloudy or raining if you're lucky. Ticket cost $9 per person for a round trip and takes approximately 15 to 20 mins each way. There are a few view points that you can hike to and the views across the city from above and the surrounding mountains are stunning. There is a cafe on top where you can have a quick bite.

I went up by myself with an Uber. No line at all, hold onto your receipt. The cable ride up is cool and 20 minutes. Once you get up there’s some initial views that will make the ticket worth it. You can hike to the summit though. I arrived at 2pm about and reached it at about 4:45 but I was in good shape. I didn’t anticipate going to the top but when’s the next time you’ll ever go? It was really difficult, I wore jeans and flat shoes like an idiot and ran out of water an hour before I made it to the top. I’m in the military so I’m used to these conditions so please don’t replicate. It is super beautiful everywhere you go. There is some climbing you have to do, I would not bring kids under 14. I didn’t use a helmet or walking sticks but lots of people did. You don’t need a tour guide if you’re somewhat competent. You’re not at the top until you see the summit sign. Don’t use taxis, they add 3$ once you go home and be careful of the change you get back from the stores.

You are rewarded with a stunning vista, with multiple snow-capped volcanoes, as long as you visit on a clear day. I was lucky to be able to do that, and I really enjoyed my visit.
I took an uber to get here, but the car actually cant reach the TeleferiQo base station unless you pay an extra $2.50 which is the parking charge they asked for about 700 meters prior. So I decided to get off and walk. I kinda regretted immediately as I forgot that this was at a high altitude. So it was a bit of a huff and puff exercise uphill before I arrived to the base station.
Once there, there is a makeshift sink/soap station where you are asked to wash your hands before you enter the ticket building. The TeleferiQo ride up is about 20 minutes.
At the top, you walk around the trails. There is the swing that seems to be iconic across Ecuador. There is also a cafe with great cheesecakes, as well as a souvenir shop. There is also a place where you can do horse riding around the higher trails, or pet (?) a llama. Didnt pet him but took some photos. I didnt do the Rucu Pichincha hike but many locals did.
After the visit, I walked back down to the same spot where I started and requested uber. There are also taxis waiting around at the base station if you dont do that.
It is probably a better place to go on your second or third day. Don't visit when you are sleep-deprived as you may not adjust well to the high altitude. 2-3 hours is sufficient if you dont do the Rucu Pichincha hike.

Hello to all that have used El TelefriQo. A couple of questions.
1) How many minutes does the gondola ride last, from bottom to top ?
2) My husband has vertigo. At any given point directly under the gondola cabin does the height exceed 254 meters (75 feet) ?
