About
A cage-free rescue center 30km from Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon, dedicated to the protection and conservation of abandoned and orphaned monkeys. We rescue, rehabilitate and release back into the wild monkeys orphaned through the illegal animal trade. Visit us by yourself using local transport or get in touch with us to book one of our full day or overnight tours and see behind the scenes at our rescue centre.

Absolutely incredible visit to La Isla de Los Monos. I went to the office first to confirm how to get there, which was very straightforward and easy to navigate, but did involve some waiting at the port until the boat was full. Upon arriving to the Island, we were greeted with monkeys coming right onto the boat. The tour is included in the entry fee and we got to learn about the different species there, their habitat and how they interact, plus much about the gross illegal animal trade. The monkeys here are clearly well taken care of and it’s just so cool to get to interact with them. Cover up though, the mosquitos were quite bad and repellent isn’t good for the monkeys. Highly recommend!!!

A wonderful place. It seemed completely legit, compared to some other rescue centers I've seen in the past. The staff was professional and friendly, and the guidance was of great quality. We had some chats with the volunteers as well, and they all were positive about the way this place is run.
But be prepared, it's quite heartbreaking to spend time with these lovely & cuddly rescued monkeys — and imagine what they've been through.
A warm recommendation to donate/visit/volunteer.

To go to this place you have to go with a Tour Operator or also on your own by fast boat to Mazan, 1 hour from Iquitos, a nice experience close to many wild animals

The guides were wonderful and the monkeys extremely well cared for and happy. They climbed all over us and the kids had a ball.

Incredible!! The monkeys are super cute and friendly
Camucha stayed with almost all the tour just be "aware" of valiente 🤣 he plays with ur hair and holds firm
All monkey have a name and the guides can recognize each of them

This is a special place where everything is done right for the monkeys. A sanctuary where unfortunate monleys are taken care of but yet they are free. I volunteered there for 2 weeks and it was an experience of a lifetime. In these 14 days I became so attached to these orphan monkeys re-adapting day to day to the wild life. We feed them, clean their spaces and the best part play with them and watch them play with the others of their kind.The team is nice and welcoming, the food is local and really good. A true heart warming experience in the middle of the jungle.

Refuge is well maintained, animals are cared for well. Lets you get up close and personal to a number of native monkey species. The volunteer staff are all great. They give you plenty of photo opportunities and you can really tell they love the animals.

Vistiting this place was wonderful! I really loved meeting the monkeys and interacting with them. They are really lovely animals that enjoy being near you. Also the staff was very nice and they showed and explained us everything. I really recommend visiting this wonderful place!!:)

This was a great place to see and interact with monkeys for a few minutes.
We were guided on a short walk around the property to try to view monkeys, sloths, or other animals. Our young guide seemed tired and didn't even look into the trees to try to spot animals-so we didn't see any except the monkeys they were rehabilitating. There were several monkeys freely roaming around the housing structures and those monkeys were very friendly and a lot of fun.

I’ll be in Iquitos in September, and I would like to visit here. Can the office in Iquitos help me set up transfers? The other option is to catch a boat by the pier following the directions, is this pretty easily done? I’m worried about communication barrier as I can speak minimal Spanish. Thank you.

Would the grounds be accessible by someone who needs to use a wheelchair? If necessary my wife can go up stairs, but can't walk more than 10 feet at a time. What about the boats?

It would not be easy, as it is difficult to get to the boat to begin with snd then there is a long dock when you arrive. I am sure the people on both ends would help though. The wheelchair should be fine once in the island, but it is grass not pavement

Hi, can you tell more about getting to the monkey island without having a tour package. How it is possible to know, that the public ferry is getting to the monkey island? How long it is possible stay there?

Hello,
We hired a "tour guide" for the two of us, but felt this was unnecessary. Next time, we would hire a private boatman without a guide.
There are plenty boats along the waterway and usually men are out along the boulevard looking for passengers. If you have time, walk along the busy area a day or two before you want to visit Monkey Island. Talk to a few boaters, get prices, and schedule your time. We paid a private tour guide, which included the boat and captain/owner. The boatman seemed far more knowledgeable and wise compared to our "guide".
Remember to pack a snack and water.

I heard that Iquitos was flooding? We hoped to go to La Isla de Los Minos sometime between Feb. 10 and March 6th. Will flooding / excessive rain be a problem?

Sorry. Just got this now. The Amazon does flood. Not sure how much it affects Iquitos. Unfortunately this city is littered with trash nobody seems to care about. If there’s a flood this likely will go downstream.

I thought you have to cross the river to get to the la isla de los monos? The map looks like it's next to Plaza de Armas.
