Their #1 priority is about educating local people, and mostly children about protecting animals and preventing harming wildlife. My host Kelly (who was amazing!) was one of the people who helped start the place. Her and a group of other students began by wanting to help manetees and it has turned into much more than that! They have a great... More

They rescue baby Manatees That have lost their mothers and raise them to the point that they can be released back to the river. There are monkeys and turtles here too. No fancy tanks and cages, but remember they are doing this for the animals, not for a show.

We visited for only about an hour, wish we had more time. The Naturalist did a fine job in explaining their mission and the work behind the scene . Take you camera and you may need a flash in some areas.

I wanted to see a manatee and I did! The turtle exhibit was fun as the turtles were engaging in coitus as well. They have a good variety of monkeys and birds. If your in Iquitos and have an extra hour or two, I recommend this place.

I am generally opposed to zoos and would rate this much lower if that is what it was. It is apparently a rescue center and they say that their animals are all rescued and will be released into the wild if possible. The physical facilities vary from apparently satisfactory--I don't know how much space manatees should have--to what appears to... More

Small with dilapidated conditions for the rescued animals. Poor walkways make it difficult to get around.

The rescue center helps rescuing and placing Amazonan Manatees back in their environment. Wonderful, adorable mammals. We got the opportunity to help rpthe center with cleaning the pools and the Mantees, and also help feeding them

We visited The Amazon Rescue Center on our way from Nauta to Iquitos. This important facility is just outside Iquitos. The Center has numerous rescued creatures from the Amazon Basin area that have been injured or are sick and, in much the same manor as similar facilities throughout the US, work to bring the animals back to health and then... It was an interesting day out. I saw a few different types of animals. They say that they're going to be released back into the wild. I hope so as the conditions aren't great. The otters have a small enclosure. The monkeys are banging at their cages and the manatees are in small tiled pools. I'm fairly sure I was... More

Good tryp to learn about the wildlife found at the Amazon basin. The animals are well taken care of in open spaces, you can feed some of them!
