Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My husband and I went shopping here today. It is a rather seedy area. Although I wear a cross-body handbag, I was mugged, thrown to the ground, my purse ripped off, leaving me covered with blood with injuries to my temple, knees & elbows. I had the last laugh, though, since my purse contained only about US$5 and I quickly cancelled my credit cards and disabled my iphone. I hate that I lost my camera with pictures of Lima and Cusco but it could have been much worse.

The place is overwhelming busy. Go during the day. Great deals and you will not know where to start. Friend took me there and knew where to go. I got legitimate brands that are made in Peru and sold at main department stores in the USA for a fraction of the price. Ex: Legitimate Polos & T-shirts They also have amazing fake ones but you will not see a difference if you match it to an original.

I was in Lima for work and a colleague (who speaks Spanish) took me here. She warned me not to wear any jewelry and to not have a big purse or anything. I put my money and a credit card in a pouch that I had under my top. I had a camera in my hand to take pictures ---- and someone ran up to me, ripped the camera out of my hand and ran off! It happened just outside the gates surrounding the place (there is more police presence inside the gated area). When my colleague was talking with one of the vendors in the district, the vendor actually told me that just having the pouch undernead my shirt wasn't good enough --- I should extend the pouch and tuck it into my pants! We did find some cute clothes here that were very inexpensive. We were there on a Saturday and it was crazy busy (mainly with native Peruvians... not many tourists). While many of the shops had signs that they took credit cards, none of the vendors actually wanted to take the credit cards. They won't take US dollars either... but there are money change people outside the tall building in Gamarra. Note that the police stand close by these people so that area felt safe. However, the area didn't feel very safe to me and it does not seem like a place for tourists.

Nestled between a large textile market lies the largest indoor witches market in Peru, located 5minutes from the Gamarra metro station. The market sells frog blended smoothies, pollen, exotic fruits, dried llama fetuses, monkey skulls and all the ingredients that a witch might need.

From the outside, the market looks like your regular crowded local shopping area – when you start seeing burgers selling exotic game meat like snakes, crocodiles on the sidewalk that you know you are near the market. Watch your belongings and ask the stall owners for permission to take photos.

I visited Gamarra twice during my 3 days in Lima and loved it! The first time I had my taxi driver wait for me which was a good idea as the second time I didn't and battled to find a taxi that would take me to the airport - almost missed my flight but the fabric was worth it :)

I've been to Gamarra many times over the past 28 years. I have always received the same precautionary advice: Don't wear jewelry and don't carry a big ole purse draped casually over your shoulder or held loosely in your hand.

This past trip I did wear silver hoop earings and wasn't too worried about it. In the past I have always worn a jacket with an inner pocket where I kept my money. This trip I used a small cross body bag that was just big enough for my money and my little spanish-english translatork, plus my cell phone. I wore it under my jacket or sweater. I love going to Gamarra as you can find pretty much anything and everything there. This trip I had an ankle length overcoat custom made for me. Between the cost of the fabric and the tailor, it cost about $175. I have wide shoulders and small hips and I wanted something that fit me exactly. This would cost a small fortune in the US. My cousin had a pair of pants tailor made for her. Another day I bought 2 busos (velour track suits) for about $14 each.

If you go, it's might be a good idea of you can go with someone there who has some familiarity. There are a lot of streetfront stores, but the bulk of the stores are to be found in the indoor market buildings. There are literally thousands of them in the indoor market buildings. It can be overwhelming, but can also be a rich experience.

I have visited Gamarra at least 4 times on my trips to Peru and never had a problem. However, you do need to take a little care. I wouldn't carry a camera round my neck or wear expensive jewelery as there is no point in making it easy for thieves. I just wear a small cross-body bag and keep my money in it. I have bought large amounts embroidery thread for a cousin at about a third of the price it would cost in England and it was genuine. I have bought really good quality nightwear, trousers and leggings for a fraction of English prices. Obviously if you buy designer names at these silly prices they are not going to be the real thing. Another good shopping place is Polvos Azules where much of the clothing has labels that are definitely fake. However the quality of the fakes is as good as the real thing. My son-in-law bought several polo shirts about 6 years ago and they are still in good shape - no fading, no holes, and they haven't gone baggy.

I have gone to shop here for the past eleven years. I buy knock off polo shirts. Every time I design some custom shirts. The prices are rock bottom low. It is dangerous and we go before noon. My wife is Peruvian. Remove all jewelry, leave you camera and cellphone at home and have just enough money and not dollars. It is fun and exciting to shop.

This is an unusually long street that looks like on very large market. It is very noisy and chaotic. Lots of people were after us trying to get us to buy their goods. We felt we were the only tourists and that we were drawing extra attention over it. We didn't feel so safe and held on to our belongings and each other. I found it a bit upsetting due to the poverty and the bad hygiene that I saw there. On the way to this market we seemed to have see the worse parts of Lima.
I wasn't tempted in buying anything. It all looked so cheap but my curiosity drove me to stroll all along the main street.
Our friend that was with us and loves markets very much was absolutely fascinated and amazed. He just loved it.
Recommended for real hard core market lovers! Stay away sensitive/delicate people!
