Barranco: a picturesque and colorful place
Barranco is a very attractive place to visit, not to be missed if you travel to Lima. The ideal is to go with comfortable shoes because there are many stairs and steep paths that lead us to better enjoy the view of the place. We asked the taxi driver to drop us off at Plaza de Armas to begin our walking tour towards the famous "Bridge of Sighs".

    Best part of Lima
We walked a large portion of Lima. This was by far our favorite. Start at the bridge of sighs and walk down to the water. Come back up and walk the bohemian neighborhood. They have art wall murals, flowers everywhere and great food. Not to be missed.

    Best Neighborhood
Barranco is the best neighborhood to stay in Lima in my opinion. It’s centrally located, safe, walkable with so many great restaurants, bars and entertainment. There is also very good shopping. The murals are also spectacular.

    Street Art
A nice area to walk around. Look at the street art and grab some lunch. We did an afternoon walking tour. Bridge of sighs, Vultures and Murals. (And the no 1 Restaurant in the World in 2024 'Central') Worth visiting.

    Nice area of Lima
This neighborhood is very walkable, some nice parks, areas to access the beach down below. Many buildings have a variety of graffiti style, artist done paintings on their facades. Lock fence near the Bridge of Sighs. Interesting sculptures here and there. Some fancy colonial era buildings too.

I visited the beach here for a few hours on Christmas afternoon with my girlfriend. At first, it seemed like a good thing to do, given the pretty beautiful views from the top of the cliffs: a scenic area with a pleasant looking walkway down to the seafront. Unfortunately, it did not stay this way for long.

The beach itself was absolutely littered with discarded plastic rubbish. Seriously, in 2019, there are still people who just throw away litter on the beach? Where on earth do they think it's going to go? Other than the obvious depression this sight causes when you think just how doomed our planet already is, it also makes the beach a pretty sorry sight to visit.

Not that there is much of it to visit anyway. The whole place was completely overcrowded. We bought one beer from a vendor - a can for about €2, already a crazy inflated price for Peru but the cheapest one we could find nearby, and barely finished it before we were sick of the litter and crowds. The people were so rude. We walked up the beach and finally found a spot where we could sit in semi-peace; it was not more than ten minutes before other groups came and sit, not even on the edge of our towel, literally on our feet. It was like a whole family having a competition to see which one could be the rudest.

We got sick of this and decided to walk back, but of course, the people walking up the cliff hill path are walking deliberately in front of you and at a ridiculously slow pace so as to tire you out faster, probably to get you to buy more beer from their friends. So, go here if you want to see a lot of plastic litter about to get swept into the Pacific and have really rude locals try to go out of their way to ruin your day; otherwise, stick to the view at the top of the cliff and go elsewhere in the city.

We got the same guide for both of our Haku Tours. Felipe was an excellent guide to the architecture and history of the Barranco. We toured the ocean front, stopped at an art gallery that featured many different artisans, crossed the “Bridge of Sighs,” and saw the many wonderful street murals. Felipe told us a lot about Peruvian culture as well. Haku Tours invests some of its profits in the local community, an added benefit of booking with them

"Barranco" is one of Lima's many districts. The area was chosen by Lima's upper classes to build here their Summer and weekend fancy homes. As time passed, "Barranco" became the most romantic and bohemian district of Lima, with the old colonial mansions being converted into restaurants, cafés, bars, clubs, design shops, art galleries and museums. A sidewalk, along the cliffs, although very windy, offers beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean down below, with beaches very popular among local surfers. While visiting "Barranco", don't miss some of its most important attractions: "Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC)", "Museo Mario Testino (MATE)", "Museo Pedro de Osma", "Puente de los Suspiros", "Parque Municipal de Barranco" and "Iglesia de la Santísima Cruz". End your visit at pedestrian "Boulevard Sanchéz-Carrión", near el "Parque Municipal de Barranco", a strip of restaurants, bars, cafés and clubs! Enjoy!

I absolutely loved this bohemian district close to the ocean with a lot of street art, artists and artisans. Barranco has beautiful and old architecture. I was there, on my last day in Lima, January 1, so it was pretty crowded. Nevertheless, I enjoyed to walk around the neighbourhood, and it’s definitely worth a visit.

It was great strolling in and around the district of Barranco. There's splashes of street art here and there in this district.

Walking is suggested to take in this district. Take a break at one of many eateries, cafes, pubs and enjoy the atmosphere.

Head to Puente de los Suspiros before sunset. Plonk yourself down for a drink or two and watch the sunset in any of the sea facing bars or restaurants.

Highly Recommended!

Yes, this is a free tour with only gratuities supporting the guides. We were a little dissapointed though as it seemed that other than a last five minutes at the sea, the rest of the time was seeing and having explanations of the street wall art. It was cool and glad we did it but would have liked more.

Barranco is a wonderful suburb to walk in, eat, people watch and generally merge into daily Lima life. Great street art, performers, local eats all contribute to the ambience, plus the wonderful Museo MATE. Not to be missed if you’re visiting Lima.

The plaza is beautiful, even though it is commercialized, there are several businesses in the middle of it, The walk to the Puente de los Suspiros is worth it. There are several restaurants by the Puente that over look the ocean. At night one cannot really appreciate the beauty, so go there before sunset, so you can be there for the sunset on the Pacific Ocean. This area is the old Lima and the architecture is amazing.

very arty and full of old buildings but access to beach is not easy or safe apparently so the hotel staff told us!
Some lovely restaurants we went too.
We took a coastal cliff path walk to Miraflores, this is a disappointment, so sanitised and full of wealthy obnoxious people compared to the ones we had met in the other parts of Peru we visited. Shopping malls with western shops at western prices!
