Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A very interesting market to walk around and see how things are done in Peru. Lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, etc. Could not believe the chickens and other meats and seafood and the presentation there of, interesting. Busy place, but I would recommend an hour or so for this market. Beautiful place to photograph due to the interesting colours and other sights.

If you are staying in Lima for a while and cooking yourself this market is the one to hit up! Forget the big grocery stores you can find everything you need here...plus it's a wonderful experience. Amazing variety of fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and cheeses...and more! They also have the smallest, cutest restaurants inside that cook up amazing eats! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This market offers fresh fruit and vegetables to locals but it also has a good range of very affordable eateries. My favourite one is inside the market close to the stairs , in a corner and it's called "el rinconcito de Alex". Alex, the owner, has a very clean spot and will prepare in front of you a variety of fresh sea food dishes. A must try is "choritos a la chalaca" cooked mussels with onions, corn and chilli all marinated with lime, yummmmmmm. Prices are between $5-$10
I went on Monday and I'm planning to go again before leaving Lima.

No matter where I travel, domestically or internationally, I always visit "open air" markets if they exist. Mercado Surquillo in Miraflores serves the upper crust of Lima residents and its variety, displays and packaging make that readily evident. Given the microenvironments in Peru the variety of fresh fruits and vegetables are like nothing I have seen before. This is a must see place for anyone who is into and interested in food.

This is an easy walk around to see, smell, taste the food culture in Lima. Really well laid out and the people are very friendly and proud of their offerings. Some things in the meat area are not for the faint of heart but really fascinating. Peruvian’s use just about every part of what’s killed which we all found really interesting.

We visited this early in the morning.
The place is a haven for foodies. It had vegetable and fruit stalls all gleaming in the Peruvian sunshine.
There were exotic fruits on sale which was offered to taste for free.
There were also fish and chicken, meat stalls selling fresh produce.
A great place to come.

The Surquillo mercado n°1 is a feast for the eyes and tastebuds! Whether you're looking for fresh produce or an honest local meal at very fair prices, you can find it all at this authentic and must see mercado! I've had some amazing ceviche there and simply great chicharrón too. There's so much to choose from that a single visit just won't do :-)

It looks rundown from the outside but contains a good selection of stalls. It's great for fresh vegetables, spices and meat. The fish was variable in freshness. You can also eat at the market. In the surrounding streets you will find small shops selling kitchen and household items at great prices too.

My wife and I started going to this market in 1974 right after we were married. With the Velasco dictatorship going full throttle, planning a diplomatic dinner party was an adventure. You'd go to the market and decide then whet was best: the fish, the chicken or the meat.... Chicken was always a good choice as you could go to the chicken lady and say five double breasts and go about the rest of the fruit and vegetable shopping. When you got back freshly slaughtered chicken breasts were ready for you, still warm. You could even find out what the chickens had been eating. Well, it's a bit more modern now but still a great place for fresh fruit and vegetables. Locals have special vendors they go to every week.

I have been to several local markets in the world and this one from Surquillo is for sure the worst I have been. Really dirty, "Fresh" meat without any kind of refrigeration or protection. Peru is such a rich country in fruits and vegetables that deserves a much better market to invite foreigners and locals to taste it.
