Excellent and revealing but you need to be able to read Spanish
Jan 2020 • Couples
I learnt a lot from visiting this museum as the Shining Path years in Peru are not widely discussed or known about in the West. Most of the exhibits are in Spanish so probably best for Spanish speakers.

A must-visit museum to understand Peru
Nov 2019 • Solo
I am so glad that I made the effort to visit this museum (you do need a car/taxi/Uber - it’s awkward by public transport). It appears to be little-known amongst the sights of Lima, but it is a must-visit museum to understand the recent history of Peru. Just like many other countries in Latin America, there have been terrorist groups in Peru and many people have ‘disappeared’. Those of us from other continents know relatively little about Peru’s politics and this is an excellent way to learn more.

My only criticism of this modern, beautifully presented and well-planned museum is that there is no explanation in English, so your Spanish does need to be quite good. Someone else in their review mentioned leaflets in English. I didn’t see these but it might be worth asking at the front desk.

Although it is vital for young Peruvians to understand and learn about their own history, it would be valuable for visitors from other countries as well.

A museum with a (valid) mission
Oct 2019
An unusual and rather sombre museum - the mores as it is built into a dark coastal cliff and has a somewhat mausoleum-like quality. (Good sea-views from the terrace at the top). It commemorates Peru's recent (post-1980) cycle of violence and repression: the extreme - and ultimately futile - violence of the radical left (Sendero Luminoso and the MRTA) and the reponse of the Peruvian state, which also involved serious loss of life and abuse of human rights. The material - newspaper reports, photos, recordings, image, factual info. - is therefore grim stuff, but the approach is serious, balanced and informative. (Though it would help the visitor to know a bit about Peruvian history and geography in advance, which will enhance the experience). Entrance is free. Getting in and out of the museum - and covering the 3 large floors of exhibits - involves a bit of walking. But it's well worth the effort and, info. aside, the museum clearly has a valid mission to promote, as it says, tolerance and social inclusion. We arrived by taxi, then decided to walk back to our hotel in Miraflores (Av. La Paz): it was do-able (45 minutes), but the first half of the walk, along Ejército, is horrible: dusty, polluted and ugly.

Nothing much in English ...
May 2019 • Couples
Modern well designed building. Museum is free to enter, there is an English leaflet which tells you basics of each area and the top floor photo display on the Disappeared has English but unless you speak Spanish you will not get much out of it (even with google translate app!)

Peruvians who didn’t visit the museum are rating this museum wrong.
Mar 2019
So I read the reviews that were 1 star. Most of them are critical because they say the museum support terrorist groups such as SL . Totally wrong, the museum are actually nuestral. From a perspective of foreigner who doesn’t have any experience with Peru history I thought this museum actually were critical of these guerrilas movements. It shows how the poor and rural population were the most affected by these political conflicts. The museum try to show a perspective from the people who suffered.

The Peruvians who reviewed this museum probably didn’t visit at all. Actually the museum catalog the organization as terrorist groups. I felt this museum actually portrayed the SD as the bad guys. The message I got was that who suffered the most was the Poor and the educated were actually leading these organizations that killed many people. Very balanced and nuetral in my opinion. Worth a visit. It’s free.

Impressive

This museum recounts the history of terrorism in Peru. It is well-balanced view of the sad events occurring in Peru during the 1980-1990. Although it has been criticized by some political groups, the idea behind it to present all points of view since there were victims caused by the terrorists, but also by the government.

Very insightful and moving

I stumbled upon here by chance and surprised to find it free. My Spanish is very limited and yet I understood a lot and it didn't mater that I couldn't read everything. The building is set out in a very nice way with a mixture of pictures, videos, artefacts and displays. A lot of the content is upsetting and you don't need to be fluent in Spanish to understand this. I spent 2 hours there. I disagree with other reviews about not speaking or reading Spanish you cant and wont enjoy the museum. I did and found it very interesting and made me research more of Peru history. Beautiful displays and extremely insightful.
