- Michael MAtlanta, Georgia158 contributionsIncredible and do-able (even for a 71-year old)Spent the night in the city of Machu Picchu after taking the Machu Picchu train from . Did so in order to go on an early tour of the archaeological site. I was overwhelmed by Machu Picchu…really incredible...well worth it. Some observations and hints: 1. Try and go on an early tour (I went for the 8:00 park entrance). Did so to avoid any rain that usually occurs in the afternoon. The buses are boarded by park entrance time…so those for the 7:00 opening go up before the those for the 8:00 opening….long lines at the bus boardings but there are a lot of buses and the line moves fast. Also some of the internal sights, like the sun dial, are only accessible in the morning. If you go for later times, you will be mixed up with those arriving before you and those coming behind, which makes it crowded. 2. Get a ticket beforehand. Walked by a long line of hikers that were waiting for same-day tickets that are very limited. My guide said that some hikers wait for several days before they give up. 3. If you are afraid of heights and are not hiking to the site, close your eyes in the bus….rather harrowing trip along steep slopes. 4. Use a guide. There were many visitors who seemed to be doing it by themselves. My guide was very informative and knew the nooks and crannies and their significance…. I saw most just walk by. 5. Be aware that the government rations the movement along different paths (circuitos). Another guide got into an argument with my guide because I was going on the upper path (and thus to see “the” view of Machu Picchu) whereas his participants were relegated to a lower path and did not see “the” view. Apparently, they were not too happy. 6. I am a healthy 71-year old. To get to the higher view one has to climb steep stairs. I rested often and was able to do it without any problems. Lots of walking on paths that are not very smooth. For those with limited mobility, stick to the lower paths.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 23 October 2023

Until you visit the energy that you feel is hard to explain. I was blessed to be able to go twice The first afternoon was with a guide, it was hot and i asked rain and within 5 mins it rained and we got to see a double rainbow, spectacular. The following morning, I was there for 7am. The sun temple is only open 7-10am so take this into account. The second time I was on my own which was great having had the guide the day before got to explore and take it all in.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 October 2023

- jenmoviesHobart, Australia30 contributionsTop tier destination for the adventurer in youMachu Picchu is just like all the photos and videos you've seen. However, what you can't explain is how you feel as you are surrounded by mysterious jungle and mountains, looking out over the home of an ancient civilisation. The park itself is very well maintained, and they have worked out the best way to funnel people through - millions and millions of visitors every year. I had a solo guide booked via AirBnB Experiences and he was incredibly knowledgeable and knew how to get a good photo! There is no signage here so if you go without a guide, make sure you download an audio tour in your language first or take a guide book. Getting the ticket to Machu Picchu was not easy because I had booked the tour too late, and they weren't able to get me a ticket into the site itself. I booked a hotel in Aguas Calientes for one night and lined up at the visitor center to get my ticket. The process is not straight forward. You get a ticket with a time to return to buy your actual entrance ticket, and you need to know which route to choose in advance. This is why I recommend you book a tour or a guide who can take you through all this, or carefully research the process before going. At the entrance, there is a handy coat check where you can leave your bag as certain bags and items aren't allowed into the site. Research this before you go! The bag check is only $5 Sole (about $2 AUD). When you go in, they will also check your passport so make sure you bring your identification with you! The biggest mistake I made was not staying another night in Aguas Calientes as I had to leave Machu Picchu in a rush to get my train, then bus, back to Cusco. Another mistake was running out of time to get the cute passport stamp. Bummer. Mistakes other people made: not researching altitude sickness and how to acclimate, bringing too much stuff, not brining a hat and sunscreen, or water! (No glass allowed) A lot of people do the big walk up from Aguas Calientes, or the hike in via either the Inca Trail or the Salkantay trek via Cusco. I would say in any case, you do have to be able bodied to be able to get up all the stairs to the site and remember, it is higher altitude than many are used to so it's not easy to breathe. Despite this, I am over 40 and out of shape, plus have asthma(!!) and still made it, so give it a go!Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 November 2023
- Brad PDallas, Texas169 contributionsAn awesome experience - wonder of the world!Lifetime trip. We went 2 days. Lots of steps - maybe up to 1,600!. Plan your tickets in advance and if possible plan 2 days OR morning and afternoon. It may be foggy one of your trips and not in view. The site is now 1 way circuits -make sure to plan ahead. And you will need a guide. We were able to take water bottles in.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 November 2023
- Deborah VMontreal, Canada235 contributionsEveryone should visit at least onceWhat to say? This place is magical, unreal. The energy, the Inca architecture, the entire experience is worth every minute of your time and every cent spent. Wander through the houses and aisles, and marvel at the incredible work of one of the most advanced civilizations, whose culture is still pretty much alive in the region. Recommend staying in Aguas Calientes and taking the bus first thing in the morning. Visited in September and the weather was perfect - not too hot and no rain. For those with mobility challenges, be careful and take your time as the walk isn't easy.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 January 2024
- Christian MCopenhagen, Denmark6,232 contributionsA Visit You'll Never ForgetI've wanted to visit these unforgettable Inca ruins ever since I was a boy reading the fantastic Tintin adventure "The Temple of the Sun," which is clearly inspired by the real Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu, as you may know, is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. We've now seen six (missing the Great Wall of China), and Machu Picchu definitely deserves its place on that prestigious list. Admittedly, we didn't cry like we did when we visited the Taj Mahal (and the Great Pyramid of Giza), but we got goosebumps thinking about the organizational talent and overwhelming intelligence it took to build such a mighty city in such rugged terrain at over 2,000 meters above sea level. Without even knowing about the invention of the wheel. It's so beautiful here that you don't know where to start or end with taking photographs. A good tip: When you book your entrance ticket, choose Circuit 2, which is the most complete and will give you the most perfect photos from your visit. We couldn't get any of the early times the day we could visit Machu Picchu, so we had to choose the arrival window from 1-2 p.m. That meant we didn't have to get up in the middle of the night in Cusco to make it - and by that time, the worst crowds were out of the area, while the sun was shining perfectly for our photos.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 February 2024

It’s February so lots of clouds passing by and some showers here and there, but you just had to be patient for a few minutes and we’re rewarded with amazing views and pictures. Another bucket list goal completed! We did it without a tour guide so we could spend as much time as we wanted at the various key sites, no one rushing us along. The circuit path is easy to follow and there are staff along the way to answer questions.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 February 2024
- dave lSchertz, Texas27 contributionsPeru for Less -- Machu Piccu Tour for Retired CoupleWe booked a tour through Peru for Less and our travel advisor, Eli, was fabulous from start to finish! She tailored the tour to exactly what we wanted and made excellent recommendations which really enhanced our trip. We opted to make our own air and hotel arrangements and Eli offered recommendations and advisory for air travel flights. Eli built an itinerary to include meeting and transportation at every transition point of our trip from airport to hotel to train and bus...we never had to navigate on our own! When our flight to Lima was delayed by 24hours, the Peru for Less operations center monitored our delay and rescheduled a guide to meet our delayed flight. Because of the delay, we missed our tour of Lima, but Eli provided documentation so we could submit a claim through our credit card travel insurance. Peru for Less is a travel agency but they operate like your friends welcoming you to their country. We plan to visit more of South America and will go to Peru for Less again.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 March 2024

Rain stopped when we reached the top...just magical views as sun came up and mist rose from the swirling cloud in the valleys so far below; informative and fun tour guide, but certainly, if able a must see. An amazing and spiritual site, well worth the hike to the top. Weather was cloudy and to quote the guide we danced with the clouds. Many visitors, and you have 4 hours only, which is enough to explore the site and take loads of photos. Take a lightweight rain mac incase of fine drizzle.
Llamas roam free in the lower areas, which are very cute.

Machu Picchu
At first we thought just getting there was half the fun. We stayed at the Sumaq Hotel and can highly recommend the it, the restaurant and staff. We were there in late February when the crowds are minimal. You need some luck because this the rainy season. During spring, winter and fall they have little rain but overwhelming crowds. The other advantage of summer rain are the flowers and lush green cloud forest. You need a guide to get the full understanding of what you see and their experience walks you thru the maze in a pleasant fashion. We were overwhelmed during our four hour walk thru the palace. We started with blue sky and sun, amazing clouds and after three hours watched a rain storm approach the mountain tops. The last hour we walked in the rain. The experience far exceeded any expectations we had. Our guide Darcy was excellent. Great knowledge of how Machu Picchu was built and the local flora and fauna. Knowing what we know now we would have spend an additional day. We would have walked and enjoyed additional time in the jungle

The views are breathtaking. Seeing the pictures online represent Machu Picchu as a spectacular place; actually being there puts you in a state of awe on so many levels. The architecture, the scenery, the history, everything you learn about the Incas and the massive Andes surrounding you make this sightseeing excursion one of the most impressive. Truly a wonder of the world.
Some things we learned during our trip:
We were told that entrance tickets to Machu Picchu and the train to get to Aguas Calientes can sell out, so make sure to purchase your tickets ahead of time.
We purchased our bus tickets to Machu Picchu in Aguas Caliente the day before doing the tour. The buses get extremely busy, so we went earlier in the morning and took one of the earlier rides back to help avoid some of the crowds.
Much of the info online says you are required to have a guide to tour the grounds, however, we found that this was not a requirement at the time that we visited. This is a topic that seems to have the possibility of changing in the future though so doing your research before you head to Peru is a good idea. Our group split up throughout the day, so we ended up hiring two different private guides upon arrival at Machu Pichu. Each guide cost about $100 including tip for a tour that was 2 hours in length. It was a pleasant and informative experience, although while reminiscing about each of our tour experiences later that night, we realized that there were some inconsistencies in the information provided. This is another reason why doing your research on the various tour offerings ahead of time is a good idea.
We visited in October and the weather was perfect for us, it was warm but not too hot. We had heard that the sand flies can be annoying, so we wore long pants as well as brought bug spray and essential oils to help keep them at bay and did not have any issue.
In one area of Machu Picchu, we came across llamas and alpacas – they were wildly entertaining for our group and a fun surprise for everyone.
This experience was well worth the travel it took to get there and is definitely one to have on the bucket list!

We went to Machu Picchu in November 2021 at 6:00 in the morning. We can confirm that a guide is not required to enter Machu Picchu. So, if you want to see the site in your own tempo - you can visit Machu Picchu without a tour. We bought entrance tickets on the official site of Machu Picchu, and train tickets on the site of PeruRail. There were discounts for less popular departure times.
We wanted to see Machu Picchu emerging from the mist, so we booked the first time slot in the morning - at 6:00. We bought bus tickets a day before in Machu Picchu Pueblo (there are large signs Bus Tickets near the bus stop), came to the stop at 5:25 and took one of the first buses around 5:35. When we climbed to the lower terrace, there were 7 people including us, and nobody in the ruins. When we left the ruins around 9:45, there were hundreds of tourists everywhere.
We didn't take a bus down, instead we hiked about 1,5 hour in the fantastic cloud forest. The trail is clearly marked, the hike down is easy even in wet weather.

The worst management of a touristic place
First of all, to get to Machupicchu is a nightmare and really expensive.
NOW, Machupicchu is divided in 4 circuits and each circuit costs around $50. And the entrance to the bathroom is 2 soles.
It is a disaster to take the bus in Aguas Calientes: disorganization and infinite line.
At the entrance of Machupicchu: queue to enter the complex, queue to the bathroom, queue to take the bus to go back to Aguas Calientes.
INSIDE MACHUPICCHU: almost impossible to take a decent picture or just to take a moment to admire the place because all is extremely crowded, guides and guards are yelling at people to keep walking, everything is closed and you can just follow the line.
The most absurd rule: you can't use an umbrella
Round trip to get to Machupicchu is about 10h30 and you can only stay up to 4h inside (per circuit). I only stayed 2h45 in circuit 1.
Machupicchu is an amazing place but not worth it because of the poor management.

Visiting the "Santuario Histórico de Machu Picchu" is indeed a magical experience to anyone! We hear so much about its legends, its energy, its mysticism ... If you are thinking about going, keep your focus and, as soon as the world gets back to normal (or at least to the "new normal"), start packing for a unique lifetime experience! The Inca citadel had its construction started in the 15th century and was abandoned by the time of the Spanish conquest in the following century. Surprisingly, the sanctuary has never been touched by any of the earthquakes that have hit Peru on several occasions, and the Spaniards never reached the citadel. It was simply abandoned by its nearly 1,000 inhabitants and, as time passed, nature reclaimed it back. In 1911, American historian Hiram Bingham "discovered" the nearly intact ruins and their magnificiency was unveiled to the world. If you have not yet made up your mind, remember that "Machu Picchu" was appointed by Unesco, in 1983, a "World Heritage Site" and it was included, in 2000, among the "New Seven Wonders of the World"! Rush and let "Machu Picchu" bewitch you! Enjoy!

Machu Picchu is truly a majestic site. We went in January when it was rainy season and despite the rain, the beauty and majesty of this inca ruin is a must see for all visitors to Peru. We had Huaynapicchu tickets for 7am, but we didn't arrive to Machu Picchu until 9am because all trains got cancelled the day before our visit. But despite this, we were allowed to hike to Huaynapicchu at 11am after our tour to machu picchu. Overall, Machu Picchu is one of the most amazing sites my husband and I have visited.

We traveled to Machu Picchu by train and then bus from Cusco! Wow, wow wow! This must be on every bodies bucket list and it was great to arrive on a beautiful sunny and clear day! It is believed that Machu Picchu was constructed as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti, some time in the mid 1400's It is considered the most familiar and amazing icon of Inca civilisation and on arrival it is easy to see why. Thankfully it was never discovered by the Spanish during colonial times, in fact it was unknown to the outside world until 1911. As you would expect, Machu Picchu is built in the classical Inca style, with polished, dry stone walls. Rightly so, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is thought by some to be one of the new Seven Wonders of the World & I couldn't agree more. I'm sure no one would visit Peru without making the journey to MP, the Peruvians have made the whole experience straightforward, from booking the tickets, getting the train and bus and gaining entrance. Every step is straightforward and makes the whole experience worthwhile and easy. As an aside, my mobility is impaired due to MS, and although at altitude, I still didn't feel deterred from taking the trip. I was not able to circumvent the whole site but was still able to navigate the key sights. I'm so glad I came.

Our first trip to Peru and to the sacred city of Machu Picchu. Once you are off the train that leaves you at the base of this site, you can transfer to a bus that takes you to the entrance of this ancient site or you can hike it up. Once you arrive you enter and walk for about 10 to 15 minutes up some steep stairs until you reach the point that everyone goes to. Once you see this, your eyes open wide and you take a deep breath in this is magnificent, amazing and all inspiring. The view of this place is amazing. I have been to many places around the world and this is one of the best sites I have been to. If you are lucky enough to have a guide, even better as they explain the history of this sacred city. Do yourselves a favor and find a way to go and see for yourselves, you won’t be disappointed.

Amazing! Awsome!! A Bucket List Destination.
The train ride itself from/to Cusco/Machu Picchu is a teriffice event. The bus ride from Machu Picchu to the site is also an event to be remembered (somewhat scarey)!
Visiting the site is a fantastic experience!! The altitude had no effect on us.
Because of being medically short of breath, mobility was an issue; however, our guide, Guia Yanina, from Peru Premium Travel, picked out a trail allowing outstanding views. Even found a bench for us while she narrated info about the site. Because of the mobility problem was unable to take the three day ship tour and was able to arrange the overnight private tour: ship to Machu Picchu & overnight; sightseeing Machu Picchu and return to ship the next day.
Whatever suits you, time permitting, you must visit Machu Picchu. An exciting view of the site; thrilling bus ride & additional scenic train ride all make for a memorable experience.

Hi I've been off site for a while.
Cusco was open for us - but I cannot say how well for you,.
We went on an organised tour, and our guide showed us around via foot (uneven surface) to various places within the town.
Much of it did involve steps and off road around inca ruins.
Our trip was inclusive with a cruise of Galapagos Islands.
Hurtigruten expeditions was the company we used AND I know they will do all they can to encompass your abilities.
We have shared excitement and adventures with fellow passengers with them that were much less able than us.

PS the altitude may be a bigger worry!! 9000-11000ft
Alcohol not recommended
I forgot where we were getting off plane, and walking briskly to the awaiting minibus - I was f*******d
Some of our party needed Oxygen during the 1st day

I am a 76 year old and have been invited to hike the Classic Inca 4 day trek to Machu Picchu. I walk daily but do get winded on hills. Day 2 is a 9 hour hike with 3600 feet elevation gain, I think. I just want to make a wise decision and not be in pain the whole time. thank you, Susan

Hello!
It's going to be your call of course ... but having said that ... the trail itself is fairly mild. The altitude is ranging from 8000 to 12000 feet - you'll definitely feel it, but for the most people it's just matter of spending a few days gradually accommodating. A few days in Cusco starting with full rest to gradually walking around is sufficient for most people. Cusco is located higher than Machu Picchu, so if you can walk around the city after a few days, the trail will be not worse.
The weather is very nice for trekking, it's cool and humid, so your main problem is going to be stay dry but you don't need to worry about overheating. Also, make sure you travel really light. The less you carry the better.
The trail is non technical, so you don't need any particular skills or techniques.
Finally, it stays close to the populated areas, so you can get help if needed. And the locals do care and help.
There are definitely a lot of seniors who make it, so it is possible. It's more about your priorities. I'd say if you really want to do it and minimize risks - book a few extra days gradually increasing altitude. At the end of the day this is the factor in your control to minimize the risks.
Good luck!

Hi - I’ve read numerous articles about maximum backpack sizes which are either listed as dimensions or volume. Mine is 10 litres, half the maximum size, but exceeds the 40cm maximum height.
Which takes priority, volume or dimensions?
Thanks

They aren't checking that closely. However, the bus up there is small and some of the areas are narrow. Ensure your equipment is not going to encroach on other people or damage the site if it's too big.

Ciao,
È vero che per poter accedere a MP è obbligatoria la guida turistica? Anche se il mio biglietto comprende la montagna Huayna Picchu?
Sul regolamento c'è scritto RACCOMANDATA, non obbligatoria...
