- Vaishali P1 contributionFull day tour to Machu Picchu with Machu Picchu TerraMy husband and I just went to Machu Picchu. We booked our full day trip from Cusco with Machu Picchu Terra travel agency and are very happy with their service. Train ride was good and no complaints for bus ride to main gate. Everything went well and we had good time. Our English speaking private tour guide Nilo was awesome, friendly and professional.Visited November 2022Written 4 December 2022
- Lowrence S1 contributionSantuario Historico de Machu PicchuIt rained a bit but that added to the trip. All my life I’ve wanted to come and here I am, worth every step of the climb and more it’s spell binding. Words can’t describe the aura of this place. Life offers so many things, but this has to be my best yet!Visited November 2022Written 12 December 2022

That said, we left Peru understanding that Peru is an amazing country with many wonderful things to see and do. Machu Picchu is indeed amazing. To walk there and think about the civilization that thrived there is an amazing experience. We are fortunate to have gone.Visited October 2022Written 14 December 2022

- Sam LaBeoufNew York City, New York4 contributionsIt's as spectacular and beautiful as the photos I sawI thank Terra Quechua Peru for the service provided, thanks to it, my experience in Machu Picchu were phenomenal, which I can recommend to all those people who love adventure. The Andes Mountains are distributed there. As I like natural landscapes, this time I will introduce you to the Andes Mountains, a beautiful area full of towering peaks and deep valleys. It is rich in wildlife and rare plants. Walking through this region not only allows visitors to see the incredible views that the Andean valleys have to offer, but also allows them to interact with and learn from the locals in the small villages along the way. Machu Picchu should be on every traveler's bucket list for its beautiful views, history and incredible treks.Visited January 2023Written 11 January 2023

- KomatorBarcelona, Spain870 contributionsBreathtakingMachu Picchu is one of these places we've all heard about or seen everywhere. Reality is much better. It's an impressive fortress, in the middle of the Andes. I won't discover anything you might know. It's totally worth. And if you can, the best way to visit it is by doing the Inca Trail. The satisfaction you feel when you reach it has no words to describe it. Of course, once you reach it you'll look to take the typical photo, with the fortress and the Wayna Picchu on the back. As expected, it's full of people.Visited September 2022Written 5 February 2023

- DamienBend, Oregon4 contributionsBeautiful in every way!Machu Picchu, an Inca citadel ruin, is definitely worth getting up early to catch the Inca Rail, and then the shuttle bus making 13 switchbacks to climb to the park entrance, and walking up the stairs, panting at a height of 8000+ feet. We followed our tour guide to walk around the site. From the bus station we walked up to the highest place to get the best view of the site. Even though the elevation was only 190 feet, due to the high altitude, it felt like we were hiking up a thousand feet. But once we got up to the top, we were rewarded with the amazing view of the site. The architecture was really impressive. And things were very well preserved. We saw llamas wandering up and down, completely oblivious to all the tourists around them. We stayed for less than 3 hours - wish we could stay longer if not for the long way back to Cusco.Visited October 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 February 2023
- Felix D4 contributionsMachu Picchu Finally! What a great place to be during your journey in Peru, after have spent a few days in Cusco we went to this amazing ancient building. It was on my bucket-list for many years and now I have turned my dream on real. We been very early there and avoid all the crowds and enjoyed as much as we can the views. We took a fully package included the bus drive up to reach Machu Picchu and a lunch at the hotel located at the entrance. So nice experience!Visited February 2023Written 2 March 2023

Words cannot express the professionalism, kindness and impeccable service I received from TERRA QUECHUA PERU on the Machu Picchu Tour. Honestly, I could not have done it without them. My Machu Pichu tour guide served me with white gloves. Walking not only through the ruins, but also through the streets of Aguas Calientes, with my luggage on my back to the train station. . I never felt alone or unsafe on my trip, it was like having a private concierge who really cared about my well being. I enjoyed this trip and I am very happy to recommend Terra Quechua Peru!

Lifetime trip. We went 2 days. Lots of steps - maybe up to 1,600!. Plan your tickets in advance and if possible plan 2 days OR morning and afternoon. It may be foggy one of your trips and not in view. The site is now 1 way circuits -make sure to plan ahead. And you will need a guide. We were able to take water bottles in.

Machu Picchu is just like all the photos and videos you've seen. However, what you can't explain is how you feel as you are surrounded by mysterious jungle and mountains, looking out over the home of an ancient civilisation. The park itself is very well maintained, and they have worked out the best way to funnel people through - millions and millions of visitors every year. I had a solo guide booked via AirBnB Experiences and he was incredibly knowledgeable and knew how to get a good photo! There is no signage here so if you go without a guide, make sure you download an audio tour in your language first or take a guide book.
Getting the ticket to Machu Picchu was not easy because I had booked the tour too late, and they weren't able to get me a ticket into the site itself. I booked a hotel in Aguas Calientes for one night and lined up at the visitor center to get my ticket. The process is not straight forward. You get a ticket with a time to return to buy your actual entrance ticket, and you need to know which route to choose in advance. This is why I recommend you book a tour or a guide who can take you through all this, or carefully research the process before going.
At the entrance, there is a handy coat check where you can leave your bag as certain bags and items aren't allowed into the site. Research this before you go! The bag check is only $5 Sole (about $2 AUD).
When you go in, they will also check your passport so make sure you bring your identification with you!
The biggest mistake I made was not staying another night in Aguas Calientes as I had to leave Machu Picchu in a rush to get my train, then bus, back to Cusco. Another mistake was running out of time to get the cute passport stamp. Bummer.
Mistakes other people made: not researching altitude sickness and how to acclimate, bringing too much stuff, not brining a hat and sunscreen, or water! (No glass allowed)
A lot of people do the big walk up from Aguas Calientes, or the hike in via either the Inca Trail or the Salkantay trek via Cusco. I would say in any case, you do have to be able bodied to be able to get up all the stairs to the site and remember, it is higher altitude than many are used to so it's not easy to breathe.
Despite this, I am over 40 and out of shape, plus have asthma(!!) and still made it, so give it a go!

I had put off visiting Machu Picchu for years due to pictures and tales of massive overcrowding.
I was happy to find a well organised and ordered system due to a great reduction in numbers allowed in each day and a timed entry system.
Buying the bus ticket from Aguas Calientes was no problem. No queue just pay $24 return ticket price in cash only. Dollars or Soles. The ticket is date stamped .
I went twice, one afternoon at 1pm and the following morning at 6am . The bus queues were well managed and moved quickly. Multiple checks of bus tickets, entrance tickets and passport whilst in the queue. Some people I met hadn't bought tickets on line and tried their luck to buy a ticket in the office in Aguas Calientes. Some lucky and some not. Some had tried for days unsuccessfully.
At the site entrance there are toilets , 2 Soles, no queues.
There are two entrances to the site depending on which circuit you have bought. The circuits are one way and kept separate. No going back on the circuit. You don't have to take a guide to enter the site. I did however take one on the first visit which worked out very well. There is no time limit at the site, no one checking. The only things I saw people being stopped for were selfie sticks ,walking sticks with no rubber tips and umbrellas. All being taken off people. Also no problems about taking in plastic water bottles of any description
I did circuit 2 and the Inka Bridge which was fabulous. Take no notice of weather forecasts. Each totally wrong for my two visits. The afternoon visit was sunny clear and hot. The next morning it was pouring down with thick fog mist and cloud which didn't clear until 10.30am. If that was your only visit it would have been real bad luck. It was however extremely atmospheric.
Late afternoon and early morning showed far less visitors than at other times so if you want to avoid crowds that's when to book.
Overall the trip was far less hassle than I thought it would be. Easily planned by yourself and so much more relaxing to spend a night in Aguas Calientes.
It is indeed a magnificent place to visit and the memories will live with me forever.

We booked a tour of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu from the Terra Quechua Peru website and had an amazing time with our group and our incredible tour guide Denis! The Inca Ruins we visited during the trip were breathtaking and Denis told us many interesting things about the area and the local culture, he took great care of us and always made sure we had the best time! He really made the whole experience special for our group. The accommodation in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu) was quite good.
I really loved the experience and got a lot more out of it than I thought I would before. Amazing memories and lovely new friends. Thanks to the whole Terra Quechua team Peru❤️

Visiting Machu Picchu was a great experience but for us was a short trip and rushing around to take the bus, train to go to Aguas calientes to visit Machu Picchu an iconic and historic sanctuary .
When I was searching about this beautiful place most of the websites recommend 3 days to visit Machu Picchu but, it's no true, You need al least 4 0r 5 days to avoid stress about transportation and to visit other interesting places, Why? because it's a long way that takes time to get to Machu Picchu, If you comes from Lima take a flight early morning (flight 1h 20mn) also, I recommend to buy a package that include transportation (round trip bus, train and Machu Picchu tickets) sometimes they ofert hotel in Aguas Calientes. the disadvantage with agencies is that when you are in Aguas Calientes ,they give you the money to go to the city office to buy Machu Picchu tickets and be ready to expend 2 to 3 hours in line and don't expect to get the time you want to visit Machu Picchu and do not forget to carry your passport and ID, they ask for it. I did the round trip from Cusco with Land Cusco travel agency, they were excellent, thanks walter and Roland our guide, no problems, also, you can buy Machu Picchu tickets from official website machupicchu.gob.peru. enjoy your trip and enjoy the food, check the weather before you go up, do not take to many things in a big bag because the other way you have to leave it at the machu picchu entrance (locker). No food allowed, only water, carry peruvian money (Sol) and if you are using credit card tell them to charge in soles, in Cusco and aguas calientes there are many money exchange offices. I hope this can help you to plan your trip.

This is one of those places that words simply do not do justice. Until you visit the energy that you feel is hard to explain. I was blessed to be able to go twice
The first afternoon was with a guide, it was hot and i asked rain and within 5 mins it rained and we got to see a double rainbow, spectacular.
The following morning, I was there for 7am. The sun temple is only open 7-10am so take this into account. The second time I was on my own which was great having had the guide the day before got to explore and take it all in.

Spent the night in the city of Machu Picchu after taking the Machu Picchu train from . Did so in order to go on an early tour of the archaeological site. I was overwhelmed by Machu Picchu…really incredible...well worth it. Some observations and hints:
1. Try and go on an early tour (I went for the 8:00 park entrance). Did so to avoid any rain that usually occurs in the afternoon. The buses are boarded by park entrance time…so those for the 7:00 opening go up before the those for the 8:00 opening….long lines at the bus boardings but there are a lot of buses and the line moves fast. Also some of the internal sights, like the sun dial, are only accessible in the morning. If you go for later times, you will be mixed up with those arriving before you and those coming behind, which makes it crowded.
2. Get a ticket beforehand. Walked by a long line of hikers that were waiting for same-day tickets that are very limited. My guide said that some hikers wait for several days before they give up.
3. If you are afraid of heights and are not hiking to the site, close your eyes in the bus….rather harrowing trip along steep slopes.
4. Use a guide. There were many visitors who seemed to be doing it by themselves. My guide was very informative and knew the nooks and crannies and their significance…. I saw most just walk by.
5. Be aware that the government rations the movement along different paths (circuitos). Another guide got into an argument with my guide because I was going on the upper path (and thus to see “the” view of Machu Picchu) whereas his participants were relegated to a lower path and did not see “the” view. Apparently, they were not too happy.
6. I am a healthy 71-year old. To get to the higher view one has to climb steep stairs. I rested often and was able to do it without any problems. Lots of walking on paths that are not very smooth. For those with limited mobility, stick to the lower paths.

I am a 76 year old and have been invited to hike the Classic Inca 4 day trek to Machu Picchu. I walk daily but do get winded on hills. Day 2 is a 9 hour hike with 3600 feet elevation gain, I think. I just want to make a wise decision and not be in pain the whole time. thank you, Susan

Hello!
It's going to be your call of course ... but having said that ... the trail itself is fairly mild. The altitude is ranging from 8000 to 12000 feet - you'll definitely feel it, but for the most people it's just matter of spending a few days gradually accommodating. A few days in Cusco starting with full rest to gradually walking around is sufficient for most people. Cusco is located higher than Machu Picchu, so if you can walk around the city after a few days, the trail will be not worse.
The weather is very nice for trekking, it's cool and humid, so your main problem is going to be stay dry but you don't need to worry about overheating. Also, make sure you travel really light. The less you carry the better.
The trail is non technical, so you don't need any particular skills or techniques.
Finally, it stays close to the populated areas, so you can get help if needed. And the locals do care and help.
There are definitely a lot of seniors who make it, so it is possible. It's more about your priorities. I'd say if you really want to do it and minimize risks - book a few extra days gradually increasing altitude. At the end of the day this is the factor in your control to minimize the risks.
Good luck!

Hi - I’ve read numerous articles about maximum backpack sizes which are either listed as dimensions or volume. Mine is 10 litres, half the maximum size, but exceeds the 40cm maximum height.
Which takes priority, volume or dimensions?
Thanks

They aren't checking that closely. However, the bus up there is small and some of the areas are narrow. Ensure your equipment is not going to encroach on other people or damage the site if it's too big.
