    Cuidad Viejo - Montevideo treat
The old city of Montevideo was lovely to walk through and enjoy both the sites and tastes. We lunched at Sometimes Sunday and ate at the amazing Mercado del Puerto marketplace -- arguably the best beef in S. America. For $22 US, we shared the most amazing steak, potatoes, and salad. The atmosphere is casual but the service and food superb. You will be astounded at the amount of asado and will be in heaven if you dine there.

    Another tourist trap in Montevideo!
This place is overrated. It doesn’t offer a lot of interesting things at all. The shopping is limited and overpriced. If you walk one more block you’ll find a better variety of souvenirs of the city and food items. The same goes for the restaurants. There are other and better choices around the old town then sitting indoors on this otherwise tourist trap. Not charming!

    Interesting
Walking along Montevideo streets, we went to this big market. Full of restaurants, sea food especially but also meat and any local speciality. Full of people, many tourists exploring the place

    Atmospheric authentic market hall
Called in Montevideo on a cruise and visited the market . Visited late morning when the various restaurants were setting the open fires and preparing the meat for lunchtime. Fascinating to see the array of meat being placed over the coals and wood. Was fairly quiet as early and said we would go back later for lunch at one of the many restaurants. Called back about 2-3 pm -,the place was heaving! We would have had to wait ages so didn’t eat there but still found it fascinating, atmospheric place. Tourist shops were also interesting within the market hall and stalll holders all very friendly and not too pushy. Would recommend to anyone bin a cruise to go there - and if you want to eat go early!

    Good Lunch Spot
Even though this place was a little touristy, it was a good spot to go for lunch. There are lots of restaurants and souvenir shops and there are people outside the restaurants advertising tables to you. Locals told us this is not a great place to be after dark.

    an impressive old building
The old fish market itself is an impressive old building with the steel girders in the roof still visible and some lovely old touches. That combined with some very impressive restaurants and smaller eateries with a wonderful array of meats and other dishes is really impressive. But it is obviously geared soley for tourists, particularly cruise ships, so don’t be surprised by higher than normal prices. A nice experience but staying for a night or two in the old city will provide more realistic food choices.

The old station near the port has been turned into a tourist experience stop with many restaurants and a few souvenir shops. Grilled meat of many types. Prices are high and competition means hosts trying to encourage you into their eatery. Menu in Spanish and English.
Looking up at the roof and original structure was the most interesting part.
Very near the cruise and ferry terminal, but there are better places for a drink in nearby streets while waiting for your boat.

Like many visitors, we were in Montevideo for a day on a resent cruise and we went exploring on our own (which is exceptionally easy to due in Montevideo from the cruise port). As the name says, the Port Market is a great place to walk around, look at the busting restaurants and few stores selling the required tourist goods. Despite clearly catering to the tourist market, a great number of Uruguayans also were having lunch here at the small restaurants...so the food must be pretty good (it was, I left a separate review for our restaurant).

Definitely, this is place where everyone should visit to give one a flavor of Montevideo. Be warned...it does get very crowded and this isn't some place for someone who doesn't like confined spaces. While very "open" the crowds can be overwhelming, especially during the lunch hour.

I was hosting out of town guest. The server did a phenomenal job translating all of the terms on the menu from Spanish into English. The service was really good. The table setting clean and crisp. The meal was fine. Outdoor seating was perfect on a pleasant sunny day in the middle of summer in Montevideo. Delightful.

This is an old building with mostly restaurants and some souvenir shops. A bit pricey as it is a prime location across from the ferry terminal. The immediate surrounding area has street vendors and artists as well as the only Amsterdam style “coffee shop not to be confused with cafe but foreigner are not allowed to buy.

I have been going to La Chacra since I arrived in Uruguay 🇺🇾 and live in 2004 and still going until today although have moved now. The place is espectacular and gives you the best idea of Uruguay and it’s people. You must ask for the asado de tira of course but also try chinchulin, choto, molleja, etc… And Alfredo best person in place I can recommend.

This area is very close to the port, so if there is a cruise ship in town then it will be busier than usual. There are lots of shops, some nice places for a drink and the food market is what attracts the locals. There are also a few stalls selling local artisan products. Not sure how this place will look now than tourism is pretty much locked out.

It was actually a market in the past but now is a bunch of restaurants and bars where people, locals and tourists, gather for eating. There are several options.
Some of us got fresh empanadas when others got grilled sausages. What I liked the best was the building and the surroundings. it is at the bottom of Calle Perez Castellano, probably the busiest tourist strip, after Sarandi, in the old town (Ciudat Vieja). By the way, don't wander around that area in the dark, stay on the main streets, everybody would tell you the same.
