This is one of the most interesting places we've visited in Montevideo. To be honest, we were interested more in the old building than the art. It was fascinating to see how an old prison had been transformed into a center for art and creativity. The city did a superb job. And the art on display was interesting as well.

It was a Sunday and many museums weren't open, but this one was. It took our taxi driver a while to find it. When he understood it was a former prison, then he knew where he was going. The exhibition that was on when we visited, was exhibits by artists who spent time at the prison and each decorated a... More

Well located contemporary art hall in Montevideo. The outside of building itself is a work of art. The contemporary art space is located in former prison that was built in the 19th century. Powerful indoor space and riveting outside former prison yard space. A must see while in Montevideo.

I went there by recommendation. I visited Tristan Narvaja flea market and the went to the museum. I really liked it. Artists from Uruguay and South America very well choosen. Plus, this used to be a prision, so...twisted energy around the building.

Situated in a wing of a former panopticon prison the EAC not only is a place to go and experience contemporary art but as well recent Urugayan history. The program is changing several times a year, giving an overview on contemporary art on a national and international level

I have visited the combo of contemporary art in Montevideo and trully recommend both, this place and Subte in downtown area. Espacio de Arte uses an old construction that used to be a prision, it has a great variety of activities for children during school break and nice shows.

Unique viewing space in an old prison. The exhibitions are usually in teh cells. Cool scene with attendance by the in crowd of Montevideo and all of its best artists.

There's a ton of history in this museum which was once a prison. The space used to be a prison called the Cárcel de Miguelete, the Cárcel Preventiva, and the Correccional y Penitenciaria, and was opened in 1888. It was modeled after an English prison in Pentonville, England built in 1840 with Jeremy Bentham’s “panoptic” structure. The building itself is... More

The Museum of Contemporary Art located in a former prison, is an excellent example of redesignation. Whereas part of the prison has been kept intact and illustrates its original panopticon layout, one wing has been renovated and redesigned, respecting its original cellstructure, to host exhibitions of contempory art. At the time of my visit local artists had been invited to... More
