Under the big statue in the square, just walk down the stairs and into the mausoleum to see Artigas' urn flanked by a couple of guards who will stand perfectly still while you walk around them. The walls are covered in eulogies to Artigas written...More

The Mausoleum is located in Plaza Independencia underneath a horse statue. We actually found it by accident, we did not even know about it. The statue and the mausoleum are both huge and it is guarded by 2 guards. It is very quiet there, so...More

Just as the statue in the plaza above is impressive, the underground mausoleum where Artigas remains reside is simple and moving. Clean architectural lines with carved wording on the walls recounting Artigas' legacy are the backdrop for the golden urn. Two ceremonial soldiers flank the...More

Although their are many other statues around and very impressive as well, this is a traditional man on horse. It is strategically placed as if to rule over the square. When we were there the mausoleum was closed.

Held in considerable reverence by Uruguayans, well worth the short visit to share in the history of this small but very independently minded country
