I don't understand how a guy is the "father" of a country but took off and lived somewhere else after its formation. That is the story I was told, but either way, his mausoleum is very cool. The guards in fancy outfits add a nice...More

Situated just beneath Plaza Independencia, this mausoleum is worth a visit. It is constantly guarded by two officers, and the walls are lined with write-ups about the history or Artigas' contribution and fight for Uruguay's independence.

Down the stairway beside the mounted horse of Artigas is his tomb, flanked by two guards. They are so still you would think they were statues also. A cool quiet place to enjoy with free entry.

There are a lot of stairs to walk down and up again. It is very dark and not much to see. The guards wear period uniforms. Does not take long. The photos are accurate.

Located close at Plaza de la Independencia and Salvo Palace. Artigas was a very important figure who fought for the independency of Uruguay in the XIX century. It takes just few minutes to visit it.

Walk down under the plaza and into the dark. Watch your step as the floor is black and there are some steps inside. There are 2 guards on site that just stand there. Best to visit with a guide to learn about Artigas and the...More

Take 10 minutes out of your day and check it out. I found it to be pretty cool and interesting. Was able to grab a few cool pictures here. I would not spend more than 10 minutes here. There is not that much to see/read....More

Underground memorial to Artigas, the wall play tribute to the moments in his life of great importance. Although decades old, it is modern and peaceful.
