On Skanderbeg Square there is a statue on horseback depicting the leader of the same name, the national hero who drove the Turks out of the country. The statue is beautiful and rests on a beautiful stone pedestal, a fragment of a wall. The sculptor wanted to give an impression of dynamism because the horse has two raised legs which give the idea of movement. I find that the monument was placed in a somewhat sacrificed position and that it would have been better displayed in a more central point of the square.

Very nice and fine beautiful statue of the national hero of Albania Skanderbeg with impressive height of several metres and nicely shaped realistic created horse and guy with also realistic accurate face features. Good beautiful material that still looks mint condition despite it being like 50+ yrs old and no rust. Nice position in the Skanderbeg Square that contributes to a positive environment and give pride and unity to the people living there or visiting one would assume.

It is fitting this imposing statue anchors the southern end of the square bearing the name of Albania's legendary hero. I didn't have the best conditions to photograph it. The same statue can be found as you approach Kruja. Nowhere have I been able to find the name of his horse.

If you are in Skanderberg square, you should walk over to the statue and get a shot, With the horse's one leg up, the guy did not die in battle. You need to walk around to get the best shot. Unfortunately, there is some construction near the mosque so you may try a different angle to crop out the distraction.

The hero of Albania is here on his horse and on a pedestal for all to see. It is on the grand square and lots of people stop to take photos. No shade here, so on a sunny day it can be intense. Some new development on a couple of the sides of the square.

The equestrian statue of Skenderbeg is in the very center of Tirana, overlooking the vast main square also bearing his name.
Skenderbeg is an Albanian national hero who first resisted the Ottomans.
Gjorg Kastrioti, which was his native name was an Albanian nobleman who was educated and served the Ottoman empire for 20 y advancing in positions there, but at some point turned against them and became their opponent, leading medieval Albania and uniting it against the Turks.
Skenderbeg is also a symbol of Albania multi religion (which was banned for 4 decades during Enver Hohxa rule) as he was born Orthodox, then converted to Islam during his service to Ottomans and later became Catholic during the Venetian against Ottoman empire wars, which he led and where he lost his life.
The statue is a great photo op, and a famous Albanian brandy bears his name - worth trying.

Skanderbeg Square is named after the Albanian national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu and is in the very heart of Tirana. An imposing monument of Skanderbeg watches over the crowds from the edge of the plaza. This was originally a statue of Stalin but was later replaced.

This is definitely the best feature the square has. This national Albanian hero was neatly depicted on his horse there. I really liked the flag flowing in the wind behind it, as well as the mosque and tower in the background.

This guy was one of the top 5 military leaders of the middle ages. Brilliant and wise. He is the national hero for good reason . Everyone has the photo here. Please look him up and see his story from hostage to leader.
