Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Situated along the main boulevard into and out of Sarajevo, this infamous name was coined by the people who had to endure the horrors of 30 years ago. There were snipers and spotters positioned in the tower blocks along this road and they picked off anything that moved. A very sad chapter in the long history of this beautiful city.

At first glance, the buildings look tatty and neglected. Look closer and you realise you are looking at mortar hits and bullet holes.
The buildings serve as a strong reminder of what the citizens had to endure every day.

A normal busy street, but I think that emphasises more how terrifying it must have been to just try and cross the street for work or food in the past.
An eye opener to a horrible event that normal people had to live through. I think visiting it makes you realise it more. You can still see the damage on many of the surrounding buildings.

We drove down this road with our Airbnb host, he tells the story of during the war, he would race down the road to avoid being shot at, hard to imagine, that it wasn't that long ago when the Siege of Sarajevo happened. Quite frightening really, when you here witness accounts.

When you stroll around in the old town of Sarajevo you can see the sign “Sniper Alley”/"Sniper Avenue", which was the informal name primarily for streets Zmaja od Bosne Street, Dragon of Bosnia Street and Meša Selimović Boulevard, the main boulevard in Sarajevo which during the Bosnian War was lined with snipers' posts, and became infamous as a dangerous place for civilians to traverse. The road connects the industrial part of the city (and further on, Sarajevo Airport) to the Old Town's cultural and historic sites. The boulevard itself has many high-rise buildings giving sniper shooters extensive fields of fire.

This is not actually an alley, but rather the area around the Holiday Inn just outside the Old Town, frequented by snipers during the Balkans War. Some of the buildings have been rebuilt but many remain, riddled with bullet holes. Although locals would no doubt rather forget and rebuild, the area is nevertheless part of the history of the nation, which cannot be forgotten or ignored so easily. It feels macabtre in some ways to be viewing such things and awkward in some ways to ask the young tour guides who lived through this about the history of the area, but I guess we all have our own way of dealing with things. You can choose to visit as part of guided tour, or explore on foot - it is a bit of walk from downtown but doable and highly irecommended.

This is a must go for history buffs and the awful futility of war. Read up before visiting or better still take a free walking tour.

To walk along Sniper Alley close to The Frontline, learning where The Snipers nests were during 92=95 was hard. We were informed about how many who was killed trying to cross The Street. Rally hard to understand how The situation was those days. Never more!

As I associated the word 'alley' with a narrow street between buildings I anticipated to find an alley like that in Sarajevo. However, alley also means allee (avenue) or passageway.
Ulica Zmaja od Bosne, Sarajevo's central artery was and still is to some extent a large open space connecting the different parts of the city. It runs all the way from the old town to the airport. People crossing it during the Siege were 'fair game' for Serb snipers often positioned in highrise buildings along the avenue.
Note that Serb military positions were not only held on the surrounding hilltops, but also within the city of Sarajevo. The objective of the siege was to terrorize the Muslim and Croat population groups (together forming a majority of the city population) into submission: leave or get killed.

Sniper Alley is the name given during the siege to the broad bouldevard running east-west through the core of Sarajeov from the old town in the east to the airport area in the west. It consists of the streets called Zmaja od Bosne and Meša Selimović. It was infamous because it is a necessary transit corridor, and is through the link between the core of the city and its only access to the outside world, the tunnel under the airport, yet it was very open and vulnerable so snipers would shoot anyone on it. It is lined with large buildings, many interesting in of themselves, such as the radio and television building, and many of these still are covered in bullet holes and blast marks. There is no information along it as it is not a destination in of itself, and one would probably not want to walk along this long street too much, but it is important and worthwhile to see. It is also easy to visit by using the tramvaj, which goes straight down it from the airport to the old city core. Many important buildings are alos on or near it, such as the National History Museum, Parliament, etc.
