After visiting the Catholic cathedral, the old Orthodox Church and Museum and the mosques of Sarajevo we wanted to visit this large synagogue built in the Neo-Moorish style. The ticket price included a friendly and informative guide who told us everything about the Ashkenazis in Sarajevo. Do not miss the view towards the north bank of the river Miljacka with beautiful houses, once owned by the Jews.

I visited the Synagogue as a part of Jewish tour and it was a very important part of a tour. The guide gave as a nice overview of the lives of Sarajevo Jews once upon a time a now. So it is not the place itself that is so moving, it is the story behind it. Worth hearing it and seeing it all.

The Ashkenazi were one of two major groups of Jews in Slovenia at the turn of the 20th century and this synagogue was built as a place of worship for them since the Sephardic Jews had their own Il Kal Grande synagogue. This synagogue is built in the Neo-Moorish style. The exterior isn’t obviously moorish except for the geometric bands around the roof and the four towers are closer to European style towers. The interiors have very obvious moorish and islamic influences. The Star of David is especially prominent as a decorative motif. Another moorish influence is the enormous lobed arch behind the bimah.
There's a small entrance fee to visit the synagogue.

After visiting the beautiful but non-functioning synagogue in Debrovnik, it was a spiritual lift to attend friday night services in Sarajevo at the nearby synagogue near the river bank.
The Ashkenazic synagogue reflects its history in its name but not in its worship, which is Sefardic. The young couple leading the community and the other worshippers were very welcoming and apologetc for not being able to arrange for prayer on Saturday morning.they are simply too few and therefore appreciate tourist participation.
By the way ask about Anna’s art. She is working with calligraphy.

Attended Friday evening temple services with friends while visiting Sarajevo. It was a wonderful experience to observe a religious service in this synagogue and we were invited to share a small meal with the others afterwards. It was nice to be welcomed so warmly.

Built in the pseudo-Moorish style and completed in 1902, the Ashkenazi Synagogue is the largest - and only functioning - synagogue in Sarajevo.
It's fairly easy to find. It's on the left (south) bank of the Miljacka River and is easily recognisable by its sand colour and by its four corner domes.
This place is really worth a visit. There's no entrance fee, although there is a donation box near the entrance.
A main area of worship is upstairs through locked doors.
When I was there, there was a very nice young woman who was happy to show me around.
I know next to nothing about Judaism, but I always enjoy visiting synagogues because I appreciate their simplicity.

One of the largest and oldest synagogues in Europe. This one survived the 1990s war and the 3 year siege of Sarajevo. It was locked up the day we visited but after we knocked on the doors and passed some unclear test of why we wanted to have a look, someone let us in and showed us around. The prayer hall is beautifully decorated.

This is a beautiful active Synagogue. It is easy to find. It is free to tour. Be sure to get there before 2:00, when it closes.

Visiting this synagogue is a pleasant and interesting experience. The friendly host/guide showed and told about the history how two Jewish synagogues came together in this building which was misused in WW2 by the Nazis. Very special architecture with a strong Ottoman influence.

The Ashkenazi Synagogue is amazing and definitely worth visiting. The interior is so peaceful and breathtakingly beautiful. The lower part of the Synagogue was used as a horse stable by the appallingly disrespectful Nazis during World War 2.

My wife and I plan to be in Sarajevo for Shabbat at the end of April. Whom can we contact to find out the times for religious services and if there are Shabbat meals, kiddush, etc.?
