This great gem of history and culture disappointed my expectetions. Not because it's not worth its fame and the place on the Unesco List, but because of the way it is presented. The history of the church started in the 10thC and the first paintings are a 1000 years old. Most of them are covered with new layers, but still a great experience. What makes me sad/angry is that after over an hour long trip (metro to Vitosha station, then bus 46) and paying 10 leva we had to wait over 2 hours for the entrance (they let 6 people at a time) and were allowed to stay in the interior for 10 minutes (first letting the previous group out which made it really 8 min). No guidance included, there was hardly any time to see everything not to mention reading extra info. And taking pictures was prohibited.
I strongly recommend to read all you can about the place BEFORE you get there or pay extra for the guide.
PS. you cannot eat or drik in the surrounding garden = you have to go outside the gates, using the toilet is allowed only after presenting the entrance ticket.
Although I appreciate the spiritual, historic and cultural value of the place, I did not feel welcome at all.

The church and is interior are well-preserved despite their age. You are only allowed to stay for 10 minutes inside (max. 5 persons simultaneously). Not so much. Therefore it would be a good idea to combine your visiting with a bit of mountain trekking (don't forget about proper shoes).
The guide, who appeared to be an archaeologist from Egypt, spoke English fluently, which is not common for Bulgarian guides. He was very helpful and keen to answer our questions.

So many Bulgarians told me that I must see Boyana Church as it is extremely impressive.
We decided to combine a visit to Boyana Church with a visit to the National History Museum. We walked from the history museum to Boyana Church - only 2km, but uphill. Next time I would rather visit the church first and then walk downhill to the history museum.
The church is set in a lovely garden and extremely well maintained. The guide did not share a lot of information. It was however quite impressive to see the building and art that is almost a 1000 years old.

Ideally should be done in your way back from Rila monastery. You have only 10 minutes inside which might not be enough to enjoy the paintings. The area around the Church is really nice for walking.

Located far from the center, however it is a nice church surrounded by a nice park outside. The church itself is small, but beautiful inside. The guide is unfortunately only available in bulgarian. Recommended to visit the nearby waterfall the same day.

An exceptional example of Bulgarian Christian and royal architecture. A great place for both an educational tour and a picnic!

Beautiful Unesco church, magnificent frescos and super competent and friendly guide. Too bad that they must control humidity and one cannot stay longer than 10 mins inside...

beautiful and unique with a lot of history in it. The lady who welcomes guests is very informative and knowledgeable. Only 10 mins are allowed inside it, although it is a very little church. It is a very long way from the city, especially without a car - not much else around it, in my view

one of the fantastic places of the Unesco heritage, you can only enter with a ticket and for a short time, but it's worth it: the frescoes are special!
