Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This theater opened in the early 1900s, is located in the city center. It was designed by Austrian architects and in fact its neoclassical style is reminiscent of some Viennese buildings. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1923.During my visit I could only visit the exterior with the beautiful facade.

I consider the theater to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Sofia. The Fontraria and its two towers are of a notable neoclassical style. Beautiful columns, windows decorated with gold and white, create a beautiful contrast with the brick color of the entire building. Afterwards , it is surrounded by a garden and a huge square with numerous water fountains . It's nice to sit back for a while and enjoy. It's well worth visiting! Beautiful photos are taken.

The Building of the Ivan Vazov National Theater is located to be adjacent to a very pretty park in Sofia, the Capital of Bulgaria, that has lots of fountains and lots of trees, which can guarantee the making-up of your day, no matter how tired or even exhausted you may be, before going there! A feeling of inner joy and tranquility will fall upon you, as a magical spell, when you visit the place. Plus, you have to make sure that you take your well-trusted Camera with you there! Believe me, you will love taking photos of the park, but also of the Ivan Vazov National Theater!

The National theater has a beautiful building in red (take a photo in front of it). There are three buildings like that - one in Sofia, one in Varna (theatre) and one in Ruse (opera house), all painted in red. However, this is the biggest and the most decorated one. If you go there during the summer (and especially weekends), you may see different performances of musicians and artists in front of it, as well as Bulgarian wedding (they tend to make photos there). During winter, it is often a place where an ice skate rink is put.

This place is located in the center of Sofia, a few minutes steps from San Nicholas church and the main cathedral.
This is surrounded by a little park with a fountain, which is exactly in front of the theatre.
The fountain has a contemporary statue of a female dancer in the middle, though, I want to stress, ballet is not played in this theatre.
The facade of the theatre shows gold and bright colors, and and is richly decorated, especially in the pediment, which underlines the neoclassical structure of the building.
We could not visit the inner part of the theatre, as we'd love to, but we saw the ticket office on one side of the theatre.

The theater was built following the design of the Vienna theater and is really beautiful. It is located in the city center and there is a nice garden with a fountain in front of it. It is also a good place to spend a couple of hours in the evening when a lot of young people meet there.

We didn't get the opportunity to go inside the theater, but when I saw it during our FreeSofiaTOur I was amazed.
I loved the architecture of the building and especially on the top of the entrance.
The golden parts are beautiful.

The building's facade is ornately beautiful and stands out in the city's communist-classicist architectural style. Thelife story of Ivan Vazov is quite fantastic. The theatre is surrounded by a pleasant park. Just next to is is a beautiful fountain and a small street cafe. An enchanting place for a break in the city.

Hello everyone,
I wanted to know if the theater offers shows in English. I know that at least one review here and the website of the theater, which seems to be available only in English, indicate otherwise, but maybe I am missing something.
If someone could point me towards other cultural venues in English I would be very grateful.
Kind regards and a happy new year,
Lukas Köstler

Hi Lukas. T
To what I heard and remember during my Sofia tourist tour in 2016, there are no English plays. It's all in Bulgarian. Sorry to disappoint you.
Still, if it's not freezing weather during your Sofia visit, I highly recommend you take some time to chill in the park right in front of the Ivan Vazov National Theater. I enjoyed several great hours there - just relaxing and listening to the Jazz music.
