This statue marks one of two main squares in Zagreb, the other being in front of the railway station.
I understand Jelacic is a well respected Croatian figure and he is certainly popular for having your photo taken below. The square really marks the junction between upper and lower town. It is also a major crossover for the tram system. So look out for the statue.

Dominating Ban Josip Jelačìć Square is this wonderful equestrian statue in honour of Count Josip Jelačìć Von Bužím
Count Josip Jelačìć Vipon Bužím ( 1801-1859 ) was Croatian Lieutenant Field Marshal in the Imperial Royal Army , a member of the House Of Jelačìć ,he is best remembered for his military campaigns during the Revolutions Of 1848 and a leading figure in the abolition of serfdom in Croatia .
This huge statue is amazing to view ,the work of Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn and created in 1866,it's such an imposing statue showing the great man in full military attire ,sabre drawn astride his steed ,it's just a great statue to view and easy to locate on the square named in his honour.
Well worth checking out if you're in the area.

This statue is of Ban Josip Jelacic. I believe this statue was removed and then replaced earlier in its life. He was the governor of Croatia in the 1800's and was a supporter of Croatian independence. The statue is located in the heart of the Ban Josip Jelacic square. You can't miss it when visiting the square as it is the prominent focus of the square. It always has a lot of people around it and seemed to be a meeting point for a lot of locals and others.

This statue had been moved in the past but now it is located in the center of the city, the main square. Ban Josip Jelacic is an important symbol for Croatia, so I think it is worth a visit to his statue. Since it is located at the heart, most of the attractions are nearby.

The history of the monument with its removal under Tito and subsequent restoration after the independence is more interesting than the monument itself. Jelačić is hated in Hungary so Tito ordered dismantling of it to please his friend János Kádár. But as a staunch proponent of Croatian independence Jelačić is a kind of national hero in Croatia.

Like the square itself, the Ban Josip Jelacic Monument is a good place to meet. It's central, conveniently located, obviously easy to see. Not necessarily aesthetically spectacular, but the statue has some interesting history behind it.

The stirring monument to Zagreb's main square, the Croatian hero. The meeting place, geographical center of the city. Ben Jelacic Square is the place of crossroads, the place of celebrations.

It was made 1866, but when the Communists came to power they destroyed the monument, because Ban Jelacic was some of the symbol for Croatian people. At that time only war criminal Tito could be a symbol. The rests were hidden in a cellar, and after the first democratic election in 1991 the monument was restored and put on the old place.
