Manduševac in Zagreb is a historic fountain and historical source located in one of the most important points of the city, on the square of ban Josip Jelačić. It is presented in the coat of arms of Zagreb.

The source has existed here since ancient times, it provided drinking water to the city's inhabitants until the end of the 19th century.

According to local legend, it was thanks to him that Zagreb gained its name. The leader of one of the Slavic tribes led his army this way, the wars were tired and thirsty. The chief asked a woman named Manda to pass by for water, using the words: "Zagrebi, Mandušo!" ("Take it, Mando!)."

A woman dug a pit in the ground, from which water gushed out, which decided to establish a settlement in this place. To this day, the source is considered unusual, residents and tourists throw coins into the fountain for good luck.

According to the legend, this water spring is the origin of the city’s name. The knight met here a girl named Manda and asked her to scoop (“zagrabi”) him some water. The spring was covered with dirt for years, but was found and renovated as a fountain during the recent reconstruction of the main square in the year 1986. Today, it is a beloved meeting place for locals and tourists.

Located at the main Ban Jelacic town square, this humble looking fountain which on the surface is unimpressive in appearance but the most important monument in Zagreb which have the city its name. Legend has it that a knight upon returning from battle found that the town’s source of water had all dried up. Angry and tired, he struck his sword into the ground and suddenly water sprouted out. He called upon a maiden Manda to serve him the water and so she scooped (“grab” in Croatian) the water for him to drink and hence the city’s name.

Ended our free walking tour at this spot. Was interesting to learn that this is where Zagreb started. I’d research the free walking tour as it gave good insight into Zagreb.

This is a modest fountain, but it is very important for Zagreb. A Croatian war leader asked a beautiful girl Manda to scoop up some water from the spring for him. The Croatian word for “to scoop up water is “zagrabiti”. So the spring got the name Mandusevac, after the girl and the town got the name Zagreb after the scoop of water.
Mandusevac is a fountain on Zagreb’s Central Square of Ban Josip Jelacic. In the past, it was a natural water source which legends tie to the founding of the city. In the late 19th century, the source was buried while the square being paved. In 1986 it was discovered it still exists below the ground, so constructed on its place.

This fountain is part of the square, but in itself it is nothing special. More like a hole on the square, maybe it looks better when it is working.
