Studenica is one of the largest and richest Serb Orthodox monasteries. A cloister with middle age paintings with the quality like in the Virgin's Church are incredible. Restoration was going on but the best walls were visible. The route to the monastery was worthwhile. The monks offer rooms, next time I will stay some nights to enjoy the silence.

That any monasteries in Serbia survived Ottoman times is something of a miracle, but this fortified monastery is a wonderful example. The surviving frescos are entrancing and although some restoration work is being done you can see echoes of how impressive the church must have been in it's heyday. The carved stonework inside is excellent.

One gains a true feeling of these monastic communities here at Studenica, the complex of buildings protected by its impressive walls with two gates. In keeping with the synthesis between the Catholic West and the Byzantine East, the principal church dedicated to the Virgin Mary relies upon a Serbian appropriation a Western architectural idiom whereas the murals within are indebted... Beautiful monastery in a scenic location. Entry was free. The buildings are impressive. We stayed in the hotel next to it which was lovely too.

Studenica is a must among the Serbian monasteries. We actually visited 8 of them and each has its story and charm. It is in Studenica where it all started. For its historical importance and the beautiful and well preserved frescoes inside is rightfully on the UNESCO list.

The Studenica Monastery in Western Serbia is a remarkably well-preserved and impressive monastery. The complex contains two churches, the larger and more grandiose Church of the Virgin, which contains the exquisite coffins of the Serbian rulers Stefan Nemanja and Stefan Prvovencani, and the smaller King's Church containing beautiful byzantine style frescoes. The monastery is a bit isolated, so unless heading... More

It is located some 60 km south from Kraljevo (turn right on E761 in village Usce, 12 km from there) surrounded by mountains. The scenery is amazing and almost unbelievable to see round shaped walls that surround monastery complex with marble stone church from 12h century! The history of church is the story of itself, and best left to be... More

Beautiful monastery from the 13th century, it seems a whole together with the King Church, an endowment of King Milutin. It should be visited if you are in Kopaonik or pass this way in the direction of Montenegro.
