National Theatre is located in Republic Square, the main square of Belgrade, where all people meet each other. It is a classical theatre, which you can see from all parts of the square. Nice a photo with Prince Mihailo Monument.

The whole building looks great from outside, and inside is wonderful too. Very small comparing to average theaters, however, very comfortable.
We watched 'Swan Lake' last night, the ticket was cheap (800 din per person) less than $10 for the 2nd row seat. Actually, due to the size of the theater, all the seats can get good view. :) Although the show wasn't top-notch, but the whole experience was fantastic. Don't miss it if you are in Belgrade - Recommended!

Here you can see one of many excellent ballet and opera shows for very decent prices. Just go to the tix office located inside the theatre and ask for schedule. Keep in mind that theatre is closed during summer months.

The National Theatre represents a modern union of old and modern in architecture, and technically speaking, one of the most modern theatres in the world.

We arrived for a backstage tour from our Danube river cruise, with a small group.

The tour was excellent . We heard stories from one of the theatre managers which gave us an insight into the history of the place as well as some of the many famous performers who have performed here.

We were able to go onto the stage during a rehearsal for the opera being performed that evening and were able to watch some of the rehearsals.

Great to see the wardrobe rooms and hear stories of the challenges the wardrobe people have to face and the amount of work that goes into making the various versions of the costumes for each performance, for leads plus understudies. Incredible amount of work. The staging and scenery was interesting, including the different flooring required for ballets, with sprung floors etc.

The tour ended following a visit to the theatre museum, ( really interesting), with a private operatic performance from 2 of the lead sopranos (4 pieces) whilst we sipped a glass of fizz. Brilliant performances from Biljana Jovanovic, and Isidora Stevanovic. Such brilliant voices at close quarters meant that we felt their full power, which was amazing and emotional a great finale to a great backstage tour. This is a highlight of our entire trip and definitely to be recommended to anyone interested in musical performances and theatre.

Within our visit in Belgrade,I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to see a show at this theater. , I ordered 10 tickets to see the opera Rigoletto through the Internet but to my surprise, they still do not have the possibility to produce electronic tickets and therefore, personal attendance is required in order to collect tickets from the ticket office of the theater.
The interior of the theater is nice but not as beautiful as in the Opera houses in Vienna, Paris or Budapest. The level of singing itself ,was of a high standard, but the decor was low and minor. The only translation was to Serbian and in my opinion , If the theater, wants to encourage more and more tourists to come to see shows, it is appropriate that in addition to the local language will be translated into one of the international languages preferred to English as is customary in many countries today.

It is right up there among the best deals we ever have had during our travel around the world. For about 4 euros each (maybe slightly more after Brexit), we got tickets for the centre balcony seats on the first row for a truly amazing ballet dance. It is a creative and modern take on the life of Alexandre the great. The performance is breathtaking. It can easily hold it own against the best we saw in Moscow. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.
