Amherst Cinema is a non-profit, independent theater. Our mission is to...

Amherst Cinema is a non-profit, independent theater. Our mission is to inspire, inform and entertain through the universal language of cinema arts and to serve as a cultural and educational resource for all. The core of our programming at Amherst Cinema is first-run independent film and classic repertory. We show over 120 superb films each year - most are first-run gems not even considered by commercial cineplexes. Decisions about film selection are made by our programming experts who know film and who know our audiences, not - as with many multiplex theaters - by a central office in a distant location. HISTORY 1926: The Amherst Theater opened in a renovated livery building in downtown Amherst, MA. It screened many classic films and hosted occasional stage performances. 1955: the theater was sold to Samuel Goldstein and renamed Amherst Cinema. Through the 1990s, the building deteriorated due to a lack of basic maintenance. The theater closed in 1999. 2000: a group of local film buffs and arts lovers formed the nonprofit Amherst Cinema entity to save the historic structure from the auction block. With substantial help from hundreds of individuals, institutions and businesses, the group raised funds and developed plans for a cinema center. 2006: With help from hundreds of supporters, we raised nearly $3,000,000 for the Amherst Cinema's home. In May 2006, our nonprofit organization broke ground to build a new, state-of-the-art, three-screen cinema. The Amherst Cinema opened November 22, 2006. 2013: A new studio theater was opened adjacent to the main building.

Great arts theatre

Small theatre in the center of town that is the "artsy cinema". Shows great films. The theatre is small, and a bit "too small" sometimes. And they serve great craft beer!

Good films. Audience is picky and seem to think they are special. Lack of consideration of others. Because of this, we rarely go to movies there any more. Sad to say this. It's our experience.

We have enjoyed many great films here over the years. The theaters are small and clean. In that, the seating is limited, I suggest you arrive a bit early to select a suitable seat choice. Unfortunately, the "seats" do not provide adequate leg room if you are the least bit tall. I think an upper row on the aisle is... More

So far, we have only gone to movies here so that is all I can comment on. The 3 theaters I am familiar with (they have 4) have all been very clean, very comfortable and have excellent visibility and acoustics. Their film choices include real dramas, biographies, suspense, adventures, and comedies that rely on intelligence, finesse, outstanding acting and great... More

I love independent movie houses. This one is small and intimate. They have a great selection. The service is efficient and for the most part friendly. I think that serving alcohol earlier would make a lot of sense unless it is a licensing issue. I had one incident where my card wasn't working and the younger team member was confused... More

This is a charming movie theater, downtown Amherst where you can enjoy author movies. We had a Saturday morning family plan, which was great.

This is a gem. Superb foreign and independent films shown in four small theaters (one is very small). Also classic films, Met Opera and National Theatre productions and special events, such as a series of films of jazz musicians. Comfortable seating, mellow atmosphere, beverages available--coffee, tea, soft drinks, wine and beer. If you want to see a movie on a... More

Amherst Cinema shows independent and foreign films in 4 theaters of varying sizes all with comfortable seats. In addition to films, the cinema hosts talks and an amazing educational program for third grade students throughout the Pioneer Valley called See Hear Feel Film. Coffee, wine, baked goods and other usual movie fare is available to enjoy. Great vibe all around.
