Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

You cannot miss this enormous statue in the main square of Skopje. According to our guide it is of Alexander the Great but don’t tell that to a Greek as the Greeks and the (North) Macedonians both claim him as their own. Anyway who ever it depicts it is an impressive statue of a warrior on horseback and worth seeing.

This is as good as a monument that you'll ever wish to see. It's set upon a massive pillar which has various sculptures and figurines upon it and is surrounded by guards either supposedly fighting off or being protected by lions. It is vast in size and takes up half of Macedonia Square on it's own. The actual statue is at the peak of the pillar is enormous in size and is a breath taking sight. Not to be missed

A very impressive statue in a great location of the city, meaning you’d be crazy not to check it out. When the water fountains are operating it’s an even more impressive sight and there’s plenty else to admire in the local area while you’re there. One of my favourite spots in the city centre!

This very tall statue is very hard to miss. In fact it's the first thing you will notice and be in awe of when visiting the area. I was told it took millions of Euros to build this one statue. It shows the great Macedonian hero Alexander the great on a horse and it is revered by the locals.

This is obviously Alexander the Great, but officially it cannot be called that. It's located in Skopje's central square, Plostad Makedonija (Macedonia Square), and stands 22 metres, or 72 feet high. It is very impressive and in comparison makes Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London, look insignificant. There is a fountain at its base, with the almost compulsory statues of lions. A must see sight to see when in Skopje.

First it looks impressive. But if you look closer, the statue is too big for the buildings around the square and the man is taller than the horse. The square around it is in bad condition, though it’s only 10 years old. The white ground is too bright and dazzling, during warm temperatures it’s too hot on the square because there are no trees. Not a place to stay.

A gigantic statue that evidently recalls Alexander the Great even if officially no one has dared to call it that so as not to offend Greek susceptibilities on the path towards Macedonia's entry into the European Community. With its over twenty meters, the statue dominates Plostad Makedonija, the central square of Skopje. A nice glance at this part of the capital and part of its brilliant urban renewal in search of a historical identity.

A magnificent square adorned by this gigantic statue of Alexander but in good company with a long list of other statues of historic men and women, Mother Theresa, who must be mentioned. Mother Theresa who also has her own museum next door. Spent 4 days at this place and will return to this city that has lifted itself up tremendously the last 15 years since I was there last.

Nice fountain in the centre of the city, close to the old town. Lots of shops, restaurants around. Best place to spend the evening relaxing, also the place nice when the lights are lit.

I think it's the most horrible statue and it simply shows desperation for historical recognition. Believe me, whether you are Skopjian or not that Macedonia was region of Greece, Alexander the Great was Greek, the ancient sites show that the written language was Greek so I don't really get the reason why they should take someone else's history and humiliate it in such way. This is like a warrior in the middle of a gypsy village raving on top of a flashy fountain slash disco ball.. Pathetic and sad...
