An interesting stop in the heart of Skopje
Oct 2020
Macedonia's Archaeological Museum sits directly along the River Vardar steps from the city's central square and the historic Stone Bridge.
The entrance fee is 150 Dinar (2.50 Euros).
The museum is not very large, but is stretched out over 2 floors. Apparently, there was a third floor, but at this time that was closed.
The building itself is very impressive.
The showcase piece, housed on the first floor, is a replica of the sarcophagus of Alexander the Great.
Though it is only a replica, even the original (in Istanbul) did not hold the body of Alexander; as that has never been found.
It is named after Alexander as he is presented in the incredible sculpture work on the piece.
Nevertheless, an interesting piece worth stopping to see.

First, the building is amazing both during the day and night. The tariff is 100 dinara and they do have a gift shop. They have many wonderful exhibits of archaeological relics, coins, jewelry, and statues. I recommend visiting this museum.

Gorgeous Building!
Aug 2020 • Friends
This building definitely sticks out in the heart of the city center. It is particularly beautiful at night with the lights on all around. It really defines the whole area, and my second favorite thing after Alexander The Great statue!

Small but cute
Jan 2020 • Business
It was smaller than what I expect. But need to visit. It gives idea about Makedonian history. Only 2 small floors.

Nothing special
Dec 2019
I expected a lot more. Similiar items like the exibited can be seen in every museam in Macedonia. Maybe the wax figures and paintings are interesting to see.

Nice exposition with technical difficulties
Oct 2019
I loved exposition and the combination of the ceramics with highly atmospheric paintinigs was really interesting and kept me occupied. However, in the middle of my tour, the lights went off in the whole building and we stayed in the darkness. Then a man with a lantern came and told us, they dont know what the problem is, or when it will be fixed and we should leave. So I paid the full price ticket, but saw only half of the stuff.

Many Unique Items that Can't be Seen Elsewhere in the World
Nov 2019
Wonderful displays. Good signage. Some of the lighting is awkward.

It is worth getting a guide to help you understand what you are seeing. It is a useful chronological display once you can understand the content more fully. This museum represents a set of significant archaeological finds in Macedonia.

As an aside, the walk across the bridge towards the museum is terrific. The bridge is beautiful and the museum building is incredible, even though not "old".

Worth the visit
Oct 2019 • Couples
Modern museum, cheap entrance ( appr. 2€), on the main city square, next to the old town ( Turska carsija)... we really liked it, not too big to get bored ( if you are visiting with kids), but with so many archaeological treasures.

A chunk was missing

Unfortunately on our visit occurred when they were in the process of redoing exhibits from the Bronze Age and Classical period, which I imagine had some of the highlights. The prehistoric exhibits were great, especially with a curator to point out the highlights.
