THIS BEACH SUITS A WIDER USER RANGE THAN JUST FAMILIES WITH KIDS. Here’s the thing. We wanted to do the big NANTUCKET TOWN shop, but OLD POPS (grandpa) wasn’t up to traipsing the stores on account of shot knees and dicky heart. But he loves a comfy bench at some beach where he can scope out the yummy mummies, awesome aunts and naughty nannies in their cheeky swim suits - so we dropped him at CHILDRENS’ where the above isn’t exactly in short supply. I was a bit worried all the excitement might blitz the wiring in his pacemaker, but then so could too much walking around the shops. OTHERS THIS BEACH MAY APPEAL TO: - boat lovers: this beach on NANTUCKET TOWN HARBOUR has an outlook at passing sea-craft both big (the HYANNIS VEHICLE FERRY aint exactly small) and less so. Mid sizes included some cool super-yachts – NANTUCKET attracts its share of high rollers. Gotta say OLD POPS hasn’t been a big fan of boats since being torpedoed off RABAUL back in ‘45. - anyone wanting a sheltered non-ocean beach without those pesky waves and their associated rip currents. So if you are a non or poor swimmer this could be the place for you. I noticed the water shelved fairly gently off the beach. - people suffering SHARK ANXIETY: This beach has a netted shark-proof enclosure. Fair enough but a caveat: outside the enclosure may not be such a good idea: pop culture has HARBOURS and their ESTUARIES as being more sharky than average. - NANTUCKET TOWN workers seeking a close strip of sand in their work-breaks to catch up on the tan. CHILDREN’S is an in-town beach – so no time lost walking here. - and of course PEOPLE WITH KIDS. What you are looking at is a sheltered beach within the harbour, no waves or currents to worry about. And those life-guards. There is a netted enclosure which removes any anxiety about predatory fishies (for some reason flotation devices are banned from the enclosure – surf mats/surfboards etc make sense, but does this apply to those kiddies' arm or back bubbles?). There’s a playground and bandstand behind the beach PLUS island authorities put on some kid-entertaining activities during the summer. THE BEACH ITSELF – this is not a big beach, maybe 80x23m of sand. An area containing change-sheds/showers. a food outlet and some seating is behind the beach in south – to its north is a 30x40m park-like grassed area which would be a great place for a picnic Sand was closer to tan-yellow than white, not particularly coarse or stony, but there was a strip of fine weed at the high tide mark. Somewhat incongruously was a small patch of grass mid-beach. Water is supposed to be a bit warmer here than at the southern ATLANTIC-facing beaches. Seemed ok to me. Was reasonably clean for a harbour beach but not as pristine as an open ocean beach. There is a fairly small parking lot behind the south end of the beach and limited street parking, but all parking was at a premium in this busy town/harbour area. Fishing off the sand is prohibited but there were piers near both ends hosting several fishermen. TIPS - Be aware the movie JAWS was shot in the islands. If you spot a great white, ring UNIVERSAL PICTURES – there’s sure to be a spotter’s fee. - YUMMY MUMMIES who don’t like the idea of being scoped out by old dudes like POPS can buy a replica of an early 20th Century neck-to-knee swimsuit at several outlets in this historic town. BONUS – JAWS will have one look and take off for TENERIFE. - take care in selection of junior’s flotation device. Some of those back bubbles seemed expressly designed to promote face-down in the water. Not such a good idea if junior isn’t so hot at the hold yer breath thing or doesn’t want to start swimming by learning the AUSTRALIAN CRAWL. SUM UP – I’m a fan of ocean surf beaches and not too whelmed by those in harbours . But as a kid’s beach and a place attractive to specif others as mentioned above CHILDRENS BEACH tends to be above average.…

The kids wanted no part of the children's beach. It's more of a spot for day trippers to put their feet in the water. Very small and crowded with no restrooms nearby and not a place to stay for any length of time.
