Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Conveniently located in the city centre next to Istoricheskiy Muzei metro station, not far from Pokrovsky and Assumption Cathedrals.
I came here for the announced Scythian exhibition to only discover the new premises it was supposed to take place in under construction. But the main exhibition surely deserves to be seen, and it has rich Scythian collection, too.
Very specific admission and photo policy. Each of the 8 exhibitions is priced separately. So you can either choose to see specific hall(s) of your interest, or get a pack of tickets for the entire museum for UAH 64 or ca US$ 7.8 for foreigners (as of Dec 13). There’s a separate price for taking photos – each shot is priced and their number is limited. Few rare exhibits cannot be captured at all.
Among the exhibitions I found the most interesting were archaeological collection, inclusive of museum’s own excavations and rare findings (like whole burial mounds, or Scythian akinak sword) from nearby “horodishcha” (hill forts) (1st floor), the exhibition dedicated to Kharkiv in XIX century (3rd floor) and a small hall on the 4th floor with unique relics of the Cossack period.
The latter includes XVII century Hetman Mazepa ceremonial flag of 7.5 sq m, which was recently partially restored by Krakow renovators who basically saved it. This flag is now carefully preserved in the closed glass window. Make sure you see it before it disappears with time!
Don’t miss an outdoor military equipment exhibition around museum, inclusive of WWI period Mark V English tank, WWII period T-34 Soviet tank and several guns.

We spent several hours in this museum - especially the sections related to recent historical events were worthwhile to see.

The museum is the remain of the soviet propaganda. Useful if you are interested in the historical dimensions of nowdays Ukraine - take a comparative tour there and compare with the Kiyv histroical museum. You will see and feel the difference.
The muesum has 4 levels, each level has 3 - 4 exhibitions !
You must pay for every exhibition separately !! Each exhibition is around 4-5 UAH, so it means thet total cost of your ticket is around 60 UAH, but also you can choose from sections and leave parts.
PHOTO !! Important - if you want to make photos, you have to pay 80 UAH, for the photo ticket what is valid ONLY for one section of the exhibition ! It means, if you want to make photos, you have to buy around 11x 80 UAH tickets, so it is crazy.
The staff is too grumpy to help you and not speaking english, also 3-4 of them in every room watching your steps, not feel yourself comfortable.
All descriptions are just in ukrainian and mostly rusian language.
I advice you to take a look on the Scythian section, as it is significant in the region and the 2014 - commemoratin section as it has political involvment.
During your visit you can feel not just soviet propaganda, but present day propaganda also. Perfect, and important sight for the ones who are interested in historical distorsions and false conceptions.

You will find nothing about the interesting, difficult parts of Ukrain history like the first Ukrainian People's Republic of 1917, nothing about the nationalists who saw their hope in collaborating with the Germans against the Red Army twelve years after Holodomor, nothing about the terror of OUN and the struggle of UPA for independence. The is no word about thousands of Ukrains who followed the German advertising as workers and became Diseased People after WW2 who could not return to their country as they were treated as betrayers. You will only find courageous fighters of the Red Army against the Germans.
Time to get rid off the dust of Soviet history!

The museum has no exhibit to speak of. Some soviet propaganda, holograms(!!) of medals - very underwhelming. The building itself used to possess an impressive red brick exterior, but after some questionable and expensive renovation that added the glass extension and re-painted he signature wall yellow, lost it, which is real pity

I spent a very pleasant few hours here and would probably have spent longer had I not been pressed for time. It's situated right on Constitution Square but the front entrance appears to be undergoing renovations - some sort of construction, anyway, though I never saw anyone doing anything there - so you have to go in the back. Not a problem. I don't know how many tickets I actually bought but you need one, apparently, for each level. I visited three.
It begins with ancient history and moves through time to the present. Fascinating stuff, if you like history. The only comment I would make is that the exhibits would benefit from more English translations. I like to know what it is I'm looking at; that the arrangement of the exhibits appears somewhat haphazard, such that you have nineteenth century displays sitting next to the Space Race. Even so, the time was well spent and it is recommended for kids and history buffs alike.

Five of the hugest tank battles in the world were fought here or close by and only a bit of square footage is dedicated to this story. What a shame.

Very interesting museum with great artifacts! However, I was disappointed that the 2nd floor (World War 2 display) was closed until further notice!!! Only told, maybe May, maybe June.... For me it was supposed to be the main reason and interest in the museum. So check before you make the trip. I did not see anything on their website regarding the closure, which would have been nice to know!
