Awesome town with an amazing history. So worthwhile to get a private walking tour. Just about every conqueror has come through here. Amazing history.

It’s beautiful, the streets are small. Every small street reveals more small streets. The architecture is stunning, every corner reveals a surprise. After a week you may still not have discovered many places. Loads of places to eat and drink

We loved this city with its narrow streets and plethora of hidden bars and restaurants. So much to see and do ... especially in the evening. However, many of the smaller bars, and those opposite the ferry port & marina, only take cash. So make sure you have plenty of currency and avoid the ATMs that charge a heavy commission - which is the majority. There is an ATM on just about every street corner but the best rates are those associated with a bank. Quite hard to find but we discovered these always have "banka" in the title (e.g. otpbanka) and then decline the local conversion as many UK cards offer better rates.

So bad. Facilities are the worst, drinks are overpriced and only play croatian music (every day even on tourist season(, but hey it’s such a flop at least there was place to dance

This is what the old town is all about. Lots of old buildings close together and lots of narrow walkways taking you to different areas with every different turn.

A great city for a short break. Full of historical buildings and old buildings as well as a promenade to walk along the sea. Islands accessible via a short ferry crossing. Great restaurants and shops to browse.

The most intricate interesting fabulous town. Round every corner there is something different. A new shop or restaurant to explore.

As much as we enjoyed Split, the night we arrived there, we were caught in a terrible storm while camping and didn't stay as long as we originally intended to. However, I do remember what I think was one of the main "piazzas" in the town. It was full of beautiful things to buy - mostly carved out of wood.
We found the entire Dalmatian Coast, right down to Dubrovnik and beyond, to Kotor, absolutely beautiful. You won't be sorry going there.

Hello, i’m off to Split next week with my two children, aged 14 & 9.
Mr brother got married In Dubrovnik in 2016 and we all had the most incredible time there. We stayed in the old town in July & enjoyed visits to the islands etc.
We’ve opted for Split in the hope that we get to see more of this beautiful country.
I’d value recommendations please?
We’re on a budget (like most of us) so would like to make use of buses etc. again, all ideas & experience truly valued.
We are renting an apartment very close to the old town & bus station.
Thank you in advance, Nikki

Nikki, we had a kitchen in our appartment and only ate once. We were located just to the south of the market area just outside the old city. There are a couple of supermarkets in this area and things like prepared lasagne are a good option with fresh salad. We walked everywhere.

Hi we have booked a holiday to babel kuk in dubrovnik how ever I am now beginning to wonder if we should have gone to split as we don't really like too much history but like a pretty marina with a bustling front with plenty of shopspace and restaurants with plenty of activities action packed do you think we aught to see if we could move how booking or what

Sorry to be so late as I don't normally check in unless I am writing a review which is less these days.
This is a nice city for a short stay but while there check out the surrounding cities that have historical value especially those that were at war in Serbia and Croatia. Make sure you have a guide however.

Hi, we are thinking of Split as an option for a week or two in the summer, and was wondering how it compares to Dubrovnik, which had a cosmopolitan, cool vibe in places and was good for vegetarians - and for a week's stay. We are also keen on historical sites and day trips to places nearby and were wondering if this is possible in Split, as well. Any info or advice would be really helpful, thanks.

Hi Chris,
in my opinion you can see much more if you're based in Split. Dubrovnik is far away from everything else in Croatia. From Split is much easier to reach amazing national parks (Krka-amazing waterfalls, Paklenica-beautiful rocks, Plitvice lakes) also great cities like Trogir (30min drive or less), Sibenik (1h) Zadar (2,5h) or even Dubrovnik (3-3,5h). I wouldn't stay in Dubrovnik (which is beautiful but sometimes heavily overpriced) unless you are planning to go to Montenegro.
I would say rent a car and stay in Split or one of the neighbour cities. Much easier to see a lot of history and great views.

Hi. Just booked a week in early May. Wondering about the weather??
Will it be warm enough to sea bathe or just diddle my toes in? Will we need sweaters etc for in the evening?
Are the boat trips out to the islands any good and are they expensive?
Is it worth taking the boat to Dubrovnik, or does it take too long and is expensive etc??
TIA.

Hi, can't help with May weather as I was there in October - October was warm during the day and jacket/cardigan weather in the evening so i imagine May would be similar if not warmer...
We took a boat trip to Hvar which was very good and not expensive, there's a ticket office on the main harbour and the staff speak English very well. I didn't consider Dubrovnik as it's a long way from Split. Hvar is a lovely island and well worth a visit, its about a 20min walk in to the centre. Only small but very picturesque. Hope this helps 😊
