Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Prokurative or as most locals refer to it Trg Republike (republic square) is I feel one of the most recognisable landmarks in Split. This area was originally a park that was devised by the French Marshal Marmount during the French occupation. In the 19th century, the park was ripped up and the Prokurative was built to resemble a venetian square. You would think that the people of Split would be sick of having things look Venetian after the 500 years the Venetians had occupied Split and Dalmatia. Often quiet, the square has a number of restaurants (Spalatin is superb), the colour of the Prokurative enables the tourist to have a unique photographic opportunity due to the colours of the square (so different from the rest of the old town and the palace.

Very pretty square - lovely colour scheme and interesting architecture. Virtually nothing at all going on there during the winter, though.

This wonderful square just outside the old city, is very nice perfectly located: it faced the sea and has three harmonic sides full of cafes.Upstairs there are many restaurants with open terraces, on the left there are stall with specialities from Italy and they are sold till darkness, fantastic cheese, sausages, olives and pastries.

One of Napoleon's generals who conquered the city expanded it to the west and built his headquarters at the area known today as Prokurative. The street between the Palace and Prokurative is named after the general. There's a fountain south of the area that is definitely great for picture-taking especially where there are no cars parked between the two places.

Beautiful, colourful square in the Venetian style, built in the 19th century. Full of bars & restaurants.

Stunning buildings with lots of bright colours and a number of restaurants and bars in close proximity. A short walk from the Riva and around the corner from the main shopping street. We were told the area plays host to cultural displays and music events.

This has a few restaurants and if you can find a table at one nearest the seaside, it’s very pleasant. The square itself is nothing exciting. There are some stalks there mainly selling cheese, pastry and cold meats but I don’t know how good they would be in July as it’s very hot and there does not appear to be any refrigeration.

Prokurative (a.k.a. Republic Square) is a popular Italianate-style plaza facing the harbor, west of Diocletian's Palace. It offers restaurants, bars, cafes, ATMs, shops and places to explore. The name comes from the arcades on the neo-Renaissance buildings surrounding the square on three sides. The buildings date from a mid-19th century initiative by mayor Antonio Bajamonti to transform Split from a small provincial town into a cultured Mediterranean mecca. A theater (Teatro Bajamonti) was built in the Italian tradition and opened in 1859. Buildings were added around three sides of the plaza and joined by a pleasing colonnade in Venetians style and neo-Renaissance reliefs above the window. Unfortunately, the theater was destroyed by fire in 1882 (later restored, but changed from its original form). The square is occasionally used as a stage for cultural events, such as the pop music festival. On the south side is a neo-Classical fountain, destroyed by the communists during WWII, and restored in 1947. I stopped in one of the cafes for an afternoon coffee with friends, and greatly enjoyed the ambiance of the square. Prokurative is open to the public at all times with no entry fee

From time immemorial Prokurative was a sort of Split's variation on Venice's St. Mark's Square theme, a place where everything happened - from opera concerts to demonstrations to public hangings. Stay in nearby hotel Bellevue, if aou want to get a taste of old Split - or at least have a coffee at Bellevue's cafe
