Keeping the art of filigree alive.

"In a cramped back room lit by a single fluorescent bulb inside a tiny wooden-framed shop on Bosanska street, an ancient passageway just to the right of the west gate of Diocletian's palace where it opens to the Pjaca, Viktor Civljak sits at his workbench making magic with his fingers. Surrounded by the simple tools of his trade, this 72 year old gentle master artisan has been creating silver filigree for 59 years and is now the last filigree master in the city."

Filigree is a combination of art and craft, and hand-made filigree is unfortunately quite rare these days.

Made by a small family-owned jewellery shop in Split, Croatia, whose tradition spans 4 generations, this jewellery and accessories are a product of hours of detailed work and creativity.

It takes approximately 8-9 hours to make a pair of earrings so no wonder many jewellers started casting it instead of doing it by hand.

Each item is shaped, cut, welded, torched, bent, moulded and polished by hand, and therefore unique.

Traditional silver and golden filigree has been around Dalmatian region since medieval times. There is a legend that says, when Turks invaded the Dalmatian region, filigree was one of the things they just couldn't copy to take back to their land.

A great familiar place of a family workshop. While choosing unique jewels of silver you may see a master creating things in his hands. A pleasure to support someone presenting a real handicraft by buying any product... and make my wife happy as well:-)

I stumbled across this jewelry shop as I wandered around the palace, and stopped in to check out the earrings. I was so impressed by the quality workmanship put into each piece. Apparently the jeweler is a third generation filigran jeweler, and is one of the few jewelers who crafts each piece by hand. I purchased one pair of earrings... More

I love this amazing little shop. It will forever have a special place in my heart and remain my favorite place to visit in Split. After several weeks of scouring endless jewelry stores throughout Croatia looking for my perfect Croatian filigree pendant, I finally found it here, in this store, in Split. This jeweller is truly gifted in his art.... More

It is the latest memory of the antique tradition of filigran in Split. We came by the shop by chance and were complety astonished by the pieces they were exhibiting. Altought they had only few pieces, you could see the incredible hardwork and perfection in each of them. The owners of the shop were incredibly nice, showing us how they... More

We stopped into this lovely shop looking for one of a kind gifts. We were not disappointed. We met the lovely couple who own this shop and though they didn't speak English and we didn't speak Croatian we managed to get by in Italian. They were so kind to show us all of their handmade jewelry until we found the... More

So much is represented as "hand made" these days when, many times, it is not. Refreshing to find such lovely jewelry in this small shop whose owner has been honing his craft for 59 years and is now training his son to carry on the tradition. They took the time to show us how they work the silver to create... More

looking for a piece of jewelry at a very good price, then Filigran is for you. Run by the husband and wife Civljak, they shortened a necklace for my wife within minutes and gave her an excellent deal. Highly recommended

My wife loves filigree and while in Split last year, we took advantage to find some. We looked in many shops, but we could not find the right piece... something was always lacking and everything felt mass produced. Then we found this shop quite by accident. We make it a point to always return and we always leave with something.... More

This shop is a gem. Although there is much machine made filigree to be bought in Split, the hand made artistry of this jeweler is a rare find indeed. The shop is small but the artistry beautiful and of high quality. We talked with the wife of the jeweler who was very pleasant and kind, adding keepsake gifts to us... More
